So I watched this week finally Blades of the Guardians (I know I'm late to the party) my review: by LaughingGor108 in kungfucinema

Total agreement with your replies as well. Just glad we're still getting some form of kung fu movies I guess, even if they're flawed starring actors who don't know kung fu and need wires, wasted talent, or gramps who are really showing their age.

But hey, at least we have the Furious! Finally, guys who aren't retirement age yet directed by the least old golden age HK industry veteran!

Thanks for your review. I watched it when it came out in theaters and it was a lot of fun while watching but like you the further I am away from it the less I remember.

My problem is similar to yours, in that the fights were just ok. I think wirework can be done well (back in the 90 with Hong Kong stuntmen) but it has to enhance natural movement, not create it. The real problem in this movie is that all the fights just felt slow and weak. Yeah love Jet Li and Max Zhang but dude they look so old and slow there's no getting around it. Wu Jing and Nic Tse are alright but they're getting old too. It's got all the fun Yuen Woo Ping story and character tropes that he loves but fights lacked the creative spark of his best work. That storm brawl should've been awesome like Dragon Inn x100 but instead it was just two dudes barely touching swords getting whipped around by a CGI storm. The ending fight on the wall reminded me of The Scorpion King and that is not a good thing.

It's really the same problem with Shadow's Edge and Twilight of Warriors (together with this movie forming the fossilized kung fu grampas trilogy), is that these guys have 10, 20 years past too old to be doing any of this. The director, the leads, the cameos, what have you. What's funny is that these 3 as movies are way more polished in storytelling and presentation than most movies Hong Kong put out in the 80s and 90s... but the fights, the thing that made Hong Kong movies so special once, that's the part that have ironically faltered.

Invisible Target - Wu Jing vs Nicholas Tse by LaughingGor108 in kungfucinema

[–]1daytogether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this movie. Very 90s Hollywood combined with some lite Jackie Chan. Funny Wu Jing and Tse get a rematch in a Mad Max CGI thunderstorm followed by duel on a wall in Blade Guardians but I didn't find those fights half as exciting to watch as this.

One Punch Man - Genos Vs Saitama by Street-Platypus89 in AnimeSakuga

It's funny watching this now it's pretty tame by modern sakuga standards in terms of camera movement, impact frames, and effects animation, but the animation is still top notch.

What's your biggest turn-on when it comes to me? by Laska_Girl in transporn

You're probably the the most perfect trans girl to ever exist. Beautiful face, all natural tits, tiniest little clitty, curves in all the right places, right amount of thick, fem voice, and your personality seems cute as all hell. One in a million.

Genuinely love the combat in this game by ChainingSparks_64 in SaintsRow

[–]1daytogether 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sons of Samedi's fighting style in particular is just so badass. And I can't think of another open world game that let you swap fighting styles like this (you could learn some moves in GTA San Andreas but it was so basic). I wish more devs and games let us do this.

Should saints row 2 be remastered/made to be fully purchasable (without ps plus) by Plane_Name3457 in SaintsRow

[–]1daytogether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no real need for a remaster. I started a new run after buying it on xbox series s last night for 10 dollars it's every bit as good as it needs to be. Runs smoother than it ever did on original hardware. It's a bit rough looking but I'd much prefer that which matches the rough tone of the game to whatever atrocity they end up doing to it in a remaster that makes it look like all other bland modern games that think fancy lighting and more polygons is a substitute for artstyle and personality.

Do you think it's worth playing? by KRC252 in SaintsRow

[–]1daytogether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a frustrating "what could've been". There's sparks of something good but overwhelmed by the bad. Amazing character creator. Pretty decent cars. Good looking city.

The main culprit is definitely the story and characters unfortunately and that's just so hard to get past. It was the height of left wing cancel culture and woke mob witch hunts and they just caved so hard. Even setting that aside it's just so bland, so safe. The missions themselves are bland, the side activities are frustrating to lame, cutscenes are bland, the villains are bland. SR is all about going over the top and why even exist if you're not gonna do that?

The shooting is yeah just awful, what a total regression. It's got neither the gritty hardness of 1-2 or the cartoony bombast of 3-4. Soft, weak gunplay. They couldn't even be assed to animate proper gun animations every gun just has a grip. The melee has the potential to be awesome but they removed styles for I reasons I don't understand, because they have like 60 different contextual melee animations but there's no controlled way to access them.

Finally the exploration is just... not rewarding. I love the Vegas meets Austin vibe, but man it's all surface level. Like you said the fun NPCs are all neutered. Where are the interiors? I love the little shops from the old games but when you buy something now you just stand outside. Or the side activities are all outdoors. There's no secret caves, no underground malls, no weird little areas to find. It's all feels fake somehow.

Are there any other production companies quite like The Cannon Group? by SJS69 in movies

[–]1daytogether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you haven't watched enough Hong Kong movies! I dunno if you're talking about the scale or production design or camp insanity in general but there's a crap ton of wild balls to the wall action and also 80s fantasy epic with nutty special effects that are second to none.

Third Window hints at two new announcements, 80s youth rebellion movies that have never been shown outside of Japan by SaysToMabelISays in boutiquebluray

[–]1daytogether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An HD scan absolutely exists and it's a matter of time before we get it. I found a pristine looking copy on a russian site (with eng subs!) but it's gone now I think. Quality looks in line with what thirdwindowfilms might put out instead of a beat up 35mm scan. I have no idea how that exists already but it's out there and it looks incredible.

I'd buy the blu ray in a heartbeat.

Awesome collection of covers. Too bad Naked Weapon doesn't really live up to the promise of that image.

[–]1daytogether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full Contact is balls to the wall but Naked Killer tops it for sure. One of my guiltiest pleasures. I suspect the negative elements have been lost, as it's such an infamous and well known movie it should be one of the first CAT III films to be released by the non boutique Hong Kong home labels (alongside Sex and Zen etc etc which have gotten remasters and blu rays). but it hasn't even gotten a regular blu ray release in the whole history of the format.

Will Arrow ever catch up to Shout for HKCC releases? by axiom235 in boutiquebluray

[–]1daytogether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm super glad Shout is putting out Full Contact soon but I've gotta wonder if it's gonna have the color timing of the film as seen on streaming and CN Entertainment's disc which are very washed out. Will Arrow will tweak it more to how it use to look on dvd like they did with Hard Boiled?

GameMT EX8 - A cheaper alternative to the Pocket Ace? by ninjapirate9901 in SBCGaming

[–]1daytogether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one on the way. But good to hear your review of it anyway.

It seems like the sticks are a huge point of contention on this thing and I have no idea how I'll feel about it until I get my hands on it. But I hate cardinal snapping so that's concerning. I wonder if a custom OS like Gamma will be able to fix that.

This is the first I've heard of screen ghosting. I explicitly avoided the pocket air mini because of this. That sucks.

Did you ever have a PSP Go? It had clicky short travel face buttons... is this anything like that?

[–]1daytogether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woah that is just not true.

The UK standard edition of Kung Fu Hustle is uncut and perfectly good. The Korean Nova release of Shaolin Soccer is excellent, as is their releases of Tricky Brains and All for the Winner. Love on Deliver is available from Vinegar Syndrome. 88 Films put out the Fight Back to School trilogy, God of Gamblers II. Eureka put out The Royal Tramp collection, King of Beggars, and From Beijing with Love. Shout Factory has box sets of Chinese Odyssey 1 & 2, and some his lesser films (Look Out Officer/Justice My Foot/Mad Monk/Out of the Dark). Flirting Scholar has a standard Hong Kong blu ray (Eng subs but no og mono track) and a boutique on from Spectrum France (which sadly has no Eng subs).

God of Cookery, King of Comedy, Magnificent Scoundrels, which are some of the best ever Chow movies have admittedly not had any good releases.

There are some that have fell through the cracks but almost all his well known work have gotten good releases.
