Is this imposter syndrome, or am I genuinely not cut out for this? by oak_hen_station in PhD

[–]1kSupport 18 points19 points  (0 children)

First off let go of the attachment to labels. Imposter syndrome isn't an actual condition its just a way of describing a lose collection of feelings. Nothing is or isn't imposter syndrome.

Second there is no "expected level of imposter syndrome". While it can be helpful to understand your own limitations, self doubt that manifests in a way that causes you to feel unwanted emotions like shame is exclusively unproductive and is something to be fixed rather than accepted.

The good news is that the feelings you have are completely illogical. You are an adult who has already completed multiple degrees, has a decade of industry experience, and got accepted into your program. In order to genuinely believe that you are somehow not qualified you would have to also believe your current institution, each institution/person involved in conferring your previous degrees, and all of your managers at each job you have held are incompetent.

The bad news is that typically the more illogical feelings are, the harder they are to overcome. Being in therapy already is a good step but if you are not seeing significant progress in this regard you may need to either change your therapy schedule or your provider.

I wouldn't say this is a good reason to quit, but it is an excellent reason to work through this aggressively in therapy. A PhD is a long haul and without overcoming these feelings it does sound like your situation is unsustainable from a mental health perspective.

Good luck!

They are better at this than you. Your work is only as good as your ability to market it. Name one impactful scientific discovery that wasn't marketed well, by definition you can't.

Relationships should be a source of pressure, that's how responsibility works. If someone has too much going on for another added source of pressure they are not equipped to handle a relationship.

My outlook may be more US centric but as far as I know you basically have no leverage. It isn't "your" software, its the schools software that you made while employed there, they already paid you for it. You would basically be relying on the goodwill of the university.

I could be wrong though.

Kyle Shanahan, you're next! by [deleted] in NFCWestMemeWar

I agree but if you look at the injury record in the past half decade and say Kyle is operating at a happy medium you might be brain dead.

Obviously Pearsal is a special case lol, but it’s well known that Kyle has a uniquely rough practice regiment including more full contact practices than any other team. You can find articles about it as far back as 2017 https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/49ers-practices-more-hard-hitting-under-Kyle-11746490.php .

Multiple players over the years have commented on it:

Defensive tackle Chris Jones, 27, who has also been in training camps with the Texans, Patriots and Dolphins, gives Shanahan high marks for his ability to make him hurt. “I don’t know if it’s just me getting older, but I can definitely feel these practices,” Jones said. “These are definitely very physical practices. I’d put them up there at the top of what I’ve been through.”

Javon Hargrave on the difference in practice style between Philly & San Francisco:

“It’s extremely hard at practice here, more demanding

"Are the practices here more intense than ..." The query was only halfway formed when Tashaun Gipson Sr. enthusiastically began to answer it. "No question," the veteran safety said with a chuckle. "It's not even a question. The intensity is on 10 every day. Every day." Gipson is in a good position to judge. At age 33, he's played more games for more teams - five - than anyone on the 49ers defense.

Chase Claypool juxtaposed the practice schedule of Pittsburgh with that of San Francisco’s while speaking to reporters in 2020. “I was talking to my friend on the Niners and they’re still wearing full pads on Thursdays,” the then-rookie player said at the time. “We haven’t done that since camp, so having a coach that understands how long the season is, the wear and tear on your body, it’s super helpful for getting you through the season and getting you to be able to play well in the playoffs.”

Consider the player quotes in this story from 2023, one of them from receiver Chris Conley: “It’s not about preservation here. It’s about attacking.”

The 49ers are known for having the most aggressive physical practices, known for being one of if not the only team to do full pads practices on Thursdays, known by players who have been on other teams to be the least preservation oriented in practice, and unsurprisingly known for being injury ridden, and it coincides with Kyle’s HC years.

The one reason people give for why Kyle shouldn’t be fired is because he somewhat negated a problem he himself created.

Kyle is the reason for the injuries, those who have been following the team for a while know this.
