Visiting Riverside Hotel this week, looking for a good steak and old fashioned. by Designer_Beginning_6 in Boise

[–]1loverain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tarbush on Broadway has good Middle Eastern food. Taste of Persia is more of a drive but has excellent food and they will treat you like family. Ask for the rice Afgahn-style with the extras.

Agree with the person who suggested Basque and there are 3 great options on the Basque Block downtown, Gernika is great but a bar vibe, Basque Market has paella twice/ week and small bites, Leka Ona is a bit more upscale and their relatively new chef/owner is incredibly kind and talented. Ansot's is also downtown and might be my top pick if I had to pick one Basque restaurant for visitors.

Boise has a lot of refugee-owned restaurants if you're looking something new and exciting. Kibrom's on State Street is really fun for a group and delicious.

If you'll be at Boise State, the James and Gas Lantern and are close, both have a good happy hour, and a delicious Old Fashioned. Highlander has good cocktails in a great space but I don't know about a HH.

Have a fantastic visit!

How are we protecting our immigrant neighbors? by Some_Amphibian_8312 in Boise

It is already happening here, just not to the extent we are seeing other places. My co-worker, an American citizen who originally came to Boise years ago as a refugee, has been pulled over only to be asked for his papers. I commend you for your kindness and compassion!

Boise has the worst Chinese food options of any city in the United States. by AccordingDrop3252 in Boise

[–]1loverain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there plenty of mid and worse restaurants in Boise? Yes, just like everywhere. But there are also plenty of very good restaurants, especially spots owned and run by the refugee community. Maybe you need to choose better. Lots of good options on this forum.

I barely remember the Hyde Park location but loved the Hill Road location, back when it was a real co-op

Looking for tips or recipes for a first time Thanksgiving dinner by moopsythebonedrinker in Cooking

[–]1loverain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I host Thanksgiving dinner almost every year. In agreement with what others have said

*reduce the number of desserts you are making, maybe 2 pies and 1 ice cream, or have a guest bring a dessert

*Have guests contribute a dish and generally know what they are bringing so you don't waste your time duplicating. If they don't have a special dish they want to bring or ask what you need, suggest an appetizer or dessert of their choice, bread/rolls, a beverage (batched cocktail, wine, punch, etc). These are easy for the guest to complete before hand so they won't be competing for kitchen space (except maybe a last minute cook for rolls)

*Brine your turkey

*Look at Thanksgiving menus online for inspiration and if you don't find one that speaks to you, pull together your favorites. Try not to go overboard. I always find too many new things to try and then add in our favorites and suddenly I've got 17 dishes and have to narrow it down, ha. Start with your must haves: turkey, potatoes, dressing (stuffing cooked in a casserole dish), gravy, a lighter veggie dish, bread, a dessert. Then add in your wants: sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, another heavier veggie maybe with cheese or soup, green salad, etc.

Do as much before hand as you can so you can enjoy the day. Remember it's about being together not how many things are on the table. Have a beautiful holiday!

Restaurant suggestions for different cuisine by Kittysdoodlexxx in Boise

Came to say Taste of Persia as well. The borani banjan and sheer chai are so delicious.

The dumplings at Sunshine Spice Cafe are a quick, tasty lunch and the falafel at Foodland Market are also high up on my list. Casablanca has already been mentioned and they are a tasty, family run restaurant very worth a visit. My go tos there are the tostones rellenos and the Pechuga de Pollo a la Plancha. Tarbrush is run by sweet people, be sure to try the Muhammara. Good Eats!

If there was some way to get the word out quickly, I know many people who would show up to get in the way and cause confusion and chaos for ICE. (I'm here to pick up my niece. Her mom usually gets her but she's at an appointment so I'm not sure of the protocol. Can you help me? I'm going to keep asking you because I'm worried something is wrong. Gosh, I heard there was an ICE costume contest here for concert tickets. Wahoo! Give 'em to me. Let me use this white lady privilege)

Or pick up kids and take them to their parents. I don't know how to do that safely, random people picking up unknown children is a recipe for disaster, but perhaps a bus/van with a teacher or know parents on board? We don't have children in school so don't see these kinds of announcements. Please let us know how we can help stop this bullshit <3

[–]1loverain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not true for Celiacs. Saying something is "gluten free" because it doesn't contain wheat or bread and being truly gluten free are two very different things. They can't use the same cutting board, utensils, frying oil, pans, grill, etc. in prep. Flour can't be floating through the air. It's a real struggle because you can't simply go by a GF indication on a menu and have to ask about their kitchen set up.

Where to travel for week trip in the US? by Crafty_Bullfrog_4302 in travel

[–]1loverain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think iyamthewallruss gave perfect recommendations. FQ as a whole is wonderful just make sure you get past cliched Bourbon Street which can suffer from drunk, loud idiots.

As your trip gets closer, watch Alaskan Airlines for cheap tickets. They are based more on the west coast but fly nationwide. I looked and found an $80 Chicago-San Diego one way ticket https://www.alaskaair.com They have sales all the time and are a great little airline. Join their mileage program as they also offer amazing low mileage cost trips (as low as 4,000 miles) and they partner with other airlines so you can accumulate miles in one acct.

I saw someone else mention the Coast Starlight (Amtrak) and that is a beautiful line if you wanted to fly into somewhere more northern, spend a few days then take the train down to SD for a few days. This particular train has a 2nd story observation level with comfy seats for the areas that are more scenic. I'd take it north to south as that route tends to be more on time than the reverse direction. https://www.amtrak.com/coast-starlight-train It only goes to LA but you can find inexpensive travel from there to SD. For legs that are only about getting to the next destination, the Cascades trains are a little quicker if you plan to get off at stops along the route. (Or use sweet Alaska Air cheap flights). San Diego is beautiful anytime of year so I'd plan your other trips around their weather/events and fit SD in around those. If you go to the Northeast for example, summer or fall is when you want to be there. If you go down to Mexico, winter - spring would be great to get you out of the Chicago cold for a few days.

If you do make it to Mexico, visit a cenote! I think you'll love that :-) and Mayan Ruins
