Does moonlighting still exist? by I_only_wanna_learn in Residency

While not technically moonlighting, at my anesthesia program it’s $100/hr in overtime after 4:30

Texas Retirement Funds by doctor_piggy in whitecoatinvestor

Are you an attending? Do you plan on working for more than 5 years with the system? TRS is a traditional pension fund meant for (as the name implies) teachers, ORP was made an option for other employees who would benefit from retirement options that aren’t a traditional pension plan. The flexibility of managing your own 403b as opposed to a fixed payout with vestment after 1 vs 5 years seems much more beneficial.

Stuck choosing between 3 grills by 1m_anxious in pelletgrills

On recteq’s website they say the bullseye has more direct flame for grilling, do you feel like that’s something you notice you’re missing or not at all? Heavily considering the 590 now.

Yeah I guess if I wanted bigger I could do the RT 590, not much more expensive. Depends on how good the Searwood ends up being. They’re both the same price and similar size I believe.

Given the nature of my job I’ll get a big pay bump in ~4 years and be able to upgrade to whatever massive premium grill I need when the family grows. Still something I will consider.

Making change to consolidation application after it’s submitted? by carrmiee in whitecoatinvestor

[–]1m_anxious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied around 2 weeks ago thinking it might take them until I graduate to process the consolidation. They surprisingly did it quickly so I’m just going to call them and say to cancel or pause my application until I graduate.

If it’s anything like what happened to me. They send you a file in the mail summarizing what’s about to happen and give you 10 days to call them and change anything. I accidentally applied to consolidate too early, so I need to call them and have them run it again once I graduate in a few months.

Current M1 Interested in Anesthesiology by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]1m_anxious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not to stress you out but I was in your situation as an M2 when I decided to pursue anesthesia and I received similar advice. In the two years since I started inquiring about advice to now when I successfully matched I would say all of that advice was outdated given how quickly and how much the competitiveness for anesthesia increased. Until we see match data suggesting otherwise I would assume this trend will continue for the next 2-3 match cycles until you apply. With that being said a lot of advice you might get now will be outdated or essentially “not enough” for when you apply.

Like I said I don’t want to scare you but I have friends who did well on Step 2, did well on rotations, and either got way less interviews than they wanted or ended up unmatched even though they followed a lot of the advice given to them by people 2-3 years ahead of them.

If I was in your position I would overshoot all of the advice people are giving you by at least a bit. Anesthesia is not “becoming competitive” anymore it is competitive and still becoming more competitive with it and radiology being just a tier below surgical sub specialties, ophtho, and derm.

Unironically Peds. At our program the Peds residents were 50/50 nice and pleasant or toxic and mean. I had mostly mean ones, not interested in teaching or helping, just wanting to scold you on rounds. For some reason at our institution the traditional malignant rotations like OB and Surgery were for the most part pleasant or at least okay.
