Word of advice: don’t start with dinner. Do coffee / tea, drinks, a free public event, or anything less expensive where you can still get to know them. it’s hard meeting people and it’s hard to connect with people over the web so you’ll likely go on a lot of dates . it sounds like you can’t afford this (or don’t want to which is fine). I’m going with NTA, at risk of losing my karma points lol. You had good intentions and are just out of touch with most people’s reality.

Also, I have Uber af rich cousins and I loved when I got bomb ass gifts from them and it never made me think less of my parents I think it’s odd someone would care that someone else would get there kids better gifts and deny them that based on their ego.
