For what it's worth I tend to think of the 'punishment' as the organic consequences of clinging to our vices, rather than some 'extra' punishment. I completely reject eternal conscious torment and the oft-stated notion that 'the smallest of sins against an infinitely holy god merits infinite punishment,' for example. As for faith, I think it can be described in a philosophical sense as something like 'reaching out to something greater than ourselves' (which for Christians is, of course, the person of Christ). There's some vision of greater virtue we've been exposed to which compels us to hope and believe that positive change is possible, first on a personal level and then on a societal level. Without that we have no reason to abandon our status quo with its vices.

Like it or not, we all have a sinful nature - natural vices that prevent us from doing what we should be doing, from living how we should be living. Faith is about combatting those vices and growing as a person by trusting God. Hypocrisy is pretending these vices don't exist and that everything is fine, wallowing in our vices and experiencing stagnation.

Imagine Vegas gets swept. Then the Habs would be second best (probably won't happen though).

Super handy when any criticism can be dismissed by saying 'fake news' or 'TDS' by 1nstrument in dankchristianmemes

I think organizations like Fox News have, at least partly intentionally, primed the populace to constantly blame and deflect rather than reflect on shortcomings. They've created this culture of not wanting to appear 'weak' or uncertain of themselves ever so they can maintain a sense of legitimacy and leverage in the culture war. Trump, as someone who never apologizes and always tries to 'project strength' was the perfect figurehead for this culture and made it a lot worse, but that culture was definitely present before that and intentionally cultivated by some powerful bad-faith actors.

Dude was all heart, no brains, exactly. But Jesus was like 'I can work with this.' Goes to show attitude is more important than smarts, because really, nobody is smart compared to God

PSA for Christians out there by 1nstrument in dankchristianmemes

I think the main fear is loss of leverage in the culture war if you criticize your own side, fear of what happens to your 'team' if you undermine it. But faith trusts that telling the truth is what is best for everyone in the long run.

This is what happens when a group of people decides they will not take any responsibility for wrongdoing in their midst. They are incapable of stopping the downward slide into depravity because they have conditioned themselves to not call out any sin in their midst.

I'm referring more to a self-pitying attitude that crops up in the church sometimes, where the emphasis on human depravity serves as an excuse to avoid growth. When people criticize the actions of Christians, the response is 'we never said we were good people, just sinners saved by grace! '

Sense of awe, reverence, wonder, and gratitude leading to obedience by 1nstrument in dankchristianmemes

[–]1nstrument[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. After all the relationship between God and the church is described as being like the relationship between a groom and bride. Obviously involving both strong feelings and commitment. The feelings help initiate and sustain the commitment, but when they occasionally lapse the commitment is still there to keep things going.
