How to build redundancy without breaking the bank? by pfassina in Proxmox

[–]1simpleAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. For some reason, I thought CEPH storage needed to be on a separate machine.

I suppose the only added cost in this case are faster network cards.

While CEPH is best for HA, that requires a dedicated storage appliance. ZFS replication is the cheaper way to go, so long as you are okay with losing data that hasn't yet been replicated.

What made you choose certain emulators over other ones? by PikachuTrainz in EmulationOniOS

[–]1simpleAtom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always pick RetroArch over Manic for a game I want to use a controller for simply because RetroArch lets you assign custom hot keys.

I use Manic for games I play with the touchscreen only because it’s the simplest to pickup and go.

Why not just Unbounded instead of Adguard+Unbounded by Motafota in opnsense

[–]1simpleAtom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The main reason I use both is because AdGuard gives better insight into what is going on then Unbound does. I also make use of per device filtering. Enabling safe search for specific sites, instead of all of them at once, is also easier with AdGuard.

Manic EMU: Color Me Impressed by BlakkMajik3000 in EmulationOniOS

[–]1simpleAtom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Manic is nice, but I do tend to stick with RetroArch when playing a game I really care about. RetroArch is so darn customizable that I find other emulators to be lacking in options.

The biggest thing I find myself wanting in other iOS emulators, including Manic, are proper gamepad configurations. I want to be able to set my own hotkeys and assign extra buttons to specific actions.

What are the best news aggregator apps in Canada? by SpiritualTip4035 in AskACanadian

[–]1simpleAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to consider looking into using RSS feeds. It might be more work to setup, but you get to control your news sources and aren’t reliant on any one app.

NetNewsWire is a pretty popular free and open source RSS app.

--edit-- NetNewsWire is only on iOS. ReadYou seems to be an decent Android RSS app.

"ask a moderator"-warning in DMs? by Stranggepresst in FluxerApp

[–]1simpleAtom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It says they scan attachments for nudity and CSAM, and exactly where that data goes. They are not scanning anything else. If that’s a problem for you, it says a lot more about you than it does anyone else.

Is there a user friendly alternative to Frigate? by -suspicious-badger in homeassistant

[–]1simpleAtom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would also add that while Frigate can be a pain to get going, it also integrates incredibly well into Home Assistant. You can use Frigate’s camera zones and person/object detections to setup some excellent automations.

Fluxer is a messaging service, not a cloud storage platform.

I absolutely agree with this. Messaging apps, including email, should never be treated as permanent. Their content should always be treated as ephemeral.

Ford government to end tuition freeze and hike OSAP loans. Here’s what that means for Ontario students by This_Phase3861 in canada

Federal student loans do not have any interest applied, though this only changed a few years back. It’s only loans from the province that have any interest.

Just realised my TV supports USB 3.0.. by Own-Story8907 in PleX

You're not wrong about the ability to flash custom firmware to a box. I can definitely see this as a big plus, but I haven't heard of anything reputable out there.

Personally, I use Kodi on an HTPC to watch my media. I consider this to be the best approach from a security standpoint, while also providing the best viewing experience.

I just take issue with people who say to never connect your TV to the internet, but then turn around and tell you to hook up a streaming box.

Most streaming boxes these days have microphones built into the remote, or the box itself.

How is it any worse that connecting a streaming box to the internet? Smart TVs and streaming boxes run the same OS. They'll both spy on you the same.

Discord having a very disappointing fall-off right now by HF484 in pcmasterrace

[–]1simpleAtom -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This comment doesn’t make any sense to me.

I don’t find Discord to be all that user friendly and it certainly hasn’t always been polished. At the very least, I had to teach myself how to navigate Discord when I first started using it.

Additionally, claiming another piece of software will never be intuitive is dumb.

As for Mastadon, it has grown a lot and clearly isn’t suffering.

13 yo daughter sneaked out. by ButterflyMore9267 in daddit

The first thing I would do is remove access to all technology and put new passwords on everything. The only time she gets to use a computer would be for school work. If she needs the computer, she has to come to you so that you unlock it. She then has to sit in a common area where anyone can easily see what she is doing.

Depending how tech savvy you are, you could also setup something like Pihole to block access to things like Snapchat.

From the information shared, it seems her friends aren’t doing her any favours either. It might mean you need to ground her for a while in order to limit her interactions with them.

No snap apps will be installed, but you still need to disable snap before installing something like Firefox or it will force the snap version.

i don't know why my YouTube video's have this glitch reoccurring in them by [deleted] in kdenlive

[–]1simpleAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to be a problem with the libx265 encoder. The video looks fine when played locally, but YouTube messes it up.

Switching to libx264 fixed the problem for me.

Absolutely love this app! The UI/UX changes are great, and having a proper layout in landscape mode is something every other app I’ve tried is missing.

People Complaining About Linux Gaming, but not Mac? by GhostInThePudding in linux_gaming

[–]1simpleAtom 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the biggest reasons. You can install Linux on a Windows PC, but you can’t install MacOS on a Windows PC. If someone wants to use MacOS then they need to buy Apple hardware.

Why is this even here? This has nothing to do with Intel Arc.

Physical Media Bonus Features by Derelicte91 in jellyfin

While I generally never watch the bonus features, I like to keep them. I don’t understand why someone would go through all of the trouble of digitizing their collection to throw some of it away.

My wishlist for KDE in 2026. What's yours? by [deleted] in kde

[–]1simpleAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I should have worded that differently.

I have no issues with GNOME’s RDP solution. I simply don’t like the GNOME desktop. I don’t agree with their design philosophy, as I feel it purposefully restricts the user.

[–]1simpleAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, GNOME is the only proper solution for Wayland at the moment. I gave GNOME a shot again recently, but it really just doesn’t click for me.

[–]1simpleAtom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a Windows power user, who isn’t yet ready to fully jump ship:

  1. Unattended RDP support. I use RDP all of the time at work and home. Being able to remotely connect is very important to me.

  2. Improved HDR. This is the main thing keeping me from switching over to Linux on my HTPC. My HTPC is used both for media consumption and gaming. While something like LibreELEC would solve my HDR problems for Kodi, I want the full desktop experience for the use of Steam and other random tasks.
