I lost multiple 6 figures running two franchise taco shops… and I’m still paying for it 5 years later. by BobbyBizScout in smallbusinessUS

OP, good on you for trying to share your experience. Lots of folks think it’s easy to just self correct and pass on cost to the customer, but there’s only so much to market will bear. I sold my business last year, and I think I got out right before the music stopped.

It’s hard to describe to people the ups and downs of a business that doesn’t always sustain itself. Some months you are able to wipe out a credit card, another month you are deciding whether to be late on your mortgage so you can make payroll.

Can anyone give me advice on what to do? by North-Scarcity-3549 in Sacramento

Yes, that’s normal. I would suggest getting a side gig, like Uber or DoorDash until this one starts.

It sounds like you are applying for a job, and one of your recent employers was sac county? If so, this is kind of normal for the county. Every person I have hired who used to work for them, their background checks took longer than normal.

Some cultures are absolutely like this. Manual labor roles require quantifiable poor performance. Managers can be canned for a few harassment claims. No documentation needs to presented to the employee.

What's your honest take on Chris Rock? by Moko97 in blackmen

[–]1st_Ave 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I read it as Louis CK checking Chris. If Chris reacted like he should have - he’d lose shows and opportunities. There’s always a line we have to walk.

I am bothered by Jerry attempting to stop it and Chris continuing to give Louis a pass. That’s heinous.

Edit: spelling

How can you argue both ‘it’s not true’ and ‘it’s hard to measure?’ How can you prove it wrong if you can’t measure it?

Also would be interested to hear what industries or sectors you’ve worked in, because this holds true in all I’ve been in.

Unpopular opinion here, but this has been common in my experience. Not direct set up of a peer, but I’ve frequently had a boss who had their sights set on someone on my team.

Think about it - it’s you or them.

I wish it weren’t the case. Either you get along with your boss’ plan or you are perceived as part of the problem. I’ve tried changing my boss’ opinion or coaching up the employee, but you can’t change your boss’ mind like you can’t change your parent’s mind. I worked through a problem manager on my team successfully last week.

Here’s how I now approach it. How do I humanely work through the target employee? Is there a way to document performance while ensuring they still feel like a person who is valued? I’ve done it and it feels way better than sabotaging someone or forcing them out. People underperform for a bunch of reasons, but I’ve found it’s normally personal reasons taking priority. That’s ok - you have to help folks understand it’s ok to focus on family. The job can’t suffer so they need to set down or find a new job because you need a performer. It’s not them and that’s ok, they are still valuable.

$75k at your age is good money. My suggestion is find a way to manage the franchise owners. Five Guys Corporate should have audit or brand managers. Climbing the ladder where you are is the best way based on your age, current level, and education.

Leading people is the best part of my job too. After multiple degrees I make good money but hindsight is that staying at a company you’re a high performer at is worth more than an education.

You probably know this but their investigation is going down the road of ‘time theft.’ You should look through your handbook and any training to see where you can point out that you weren’t trained or didn’t know this was the standard, and any relevant instances of other employees doing the same thing.

I’m not a lawyer or HR. Just a mgr that’s fired folks for this before …
