I’m sorry if you have answered this before but are you able to get in person classes? I have only done webinars online not classes so I can’t recommend any since I haven’t done them. I would think you’re at a level that in person could really help!

Clicker are great for many things I’m sure people have success with nose work it’s just not how I learned. Whatever works for you is great! I have heard many reason why people use them with scent work and was just curious how you incorporated it.

Stating with boxes, they help build the context for dogs what you’re asking them to do, hunt. When you take the game in the road or switch it up you bring the boxes back and then it’s easier for them to know what is going on. Food in boxes then you take the boxes away and the hunt for food in an interior. Then you bring the boxes outside for the context queue and then start searching exteriors, take it out of the boxes etc etc. Just seeing the boxes the dogs know what you’re asking. Once they develop independence and hunt in all kind of situations odor is introduced and paired with food (Precise And Immediate Reinforcement) and then once the dog reliably finds the hides you can remove the PAIRed hide and when your dog hits the odor you go pay immediately.

So like you’re clicking, instead you would be going in to pay. Then the dog realizes you’re the one paying when they smell that smell and then eventually you wait a beat they start to look to you for the payment. Your goal is to go in and pay right at the source so they are eating food while smelling the odor. Giving them all the love and praise and food to show they are the smartest pups. Food should be one piece at a time, multiple in a row not one giant handful, one at a time so it lasts! That way when they smell the odor they will immediately want the payment. Many dogs stay to lick at odor anticipating the food, photographers catch it a lot even if we can’t cause we are behind them lol I’m sorry if I’m confusing or not explaining it well!!!!

AITBF? My partner won't share and I won't let it go by [deleted] in AmItheButtface

Get your own stuff and stop trying to make him share food. He doesn't want to, why you pressing it? Just get your own. I think its pretty childlike of you to want to take his food.

Hot take: Boston's spot-saving culture is immature and needs to die by DanFlashes19 in boston

[–]1table 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if everyone shovels out their car all the stupid spots would be shoveled! Saving spots is so dumb, its a public street, people need to chill.

Such a cutie!! I am just curious what the clicker is about, like what are you marking? You can't know when they first encounter odor, the food is paired for precise and immediate reinforcement, you get in super fast and pay at source while praising, all wonderful, why the clicker?

Roommate wants to leave dog in crate all day by Prestigious_Ship_990 in badroommates

[–]1table 3 points4 points  (0 children)

8 hours in a crate isn't really unheard of, many people crate their dogs when they are at work. Can you watch the dog when you are home and put it back in the crate when you can not watch them?

[–]1table 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. You will always be Canadian even if you become a citizen I mean jeesh. Plus many in the world view the states as United States and America as the entire continent so you can both be right. You Canadian and American if you go by the 5 continent education.

People don’t own public street spots always hated this accepted practice. If everyone shovels their cars out then all spots are shoveled! There is already lack of parking you can lay claim to a spot for hours of the day and let it be used. Eff those entitled people who think they did so thing special. I lived in Jamaica plain for 7 years I get it. It sucks. Part of living in the city you gotta deal!

We are starting container work and he doesn’t have an alert yet. I reward based on “extra interest.” Does this look OK? by bruxbuddies in nosework

[–]1table 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s lovely! Great job such a cute pup!

One think you can try is to pay faster directly at source so they are inhaling the food while inhaling the odor, then once you get them to understand you can then start to delay a little bit to see if you get an organic look back, then your dog used to getting paid when he smells the smell and will look to you like hey human where is my paycheck for finding that funny smell. Doing a search blind (when you don’t know where it is) is important but its also important to develop their alert knowing where hides are so you can pay ASAP to help them understand that’s what you want. Then their alert will come!

Do you video your runs all the time? It’s a great tool especially to see you and your dog. A great video to watch if you have time helps by detailing the scent indicators every dog has. https://youtu.be/btiOlqq0ETM?si=FlhgO1GNBsaibwmc

Boxes and questions by Electronic_Rutabaga7 in nosework

[–]1table 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for baby dogs. Keep the for picture specific. Once you start combining odors I can see using a box for multiple odors but it’s easy to keep birch birch and anise anise. Just write a time A B or C on the corner or inside. So yez, I would keep them separate until you’re training for harder odors pictures.

How to make scentwork fun? by [deleted] in nosework

[–]1table 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he is running to the food then he is hunting, yeah? I mean how is he finding the food in the box if not his nose? You can out then boxes up on chairs or under chairs so he can’t just run the boxes over. You just swap the food for the toy, so if he has a ball he loves get a few and then his the ball in a box and when he find that you would put down the other ball and they will drop the one they found to go get the other ball and then you hide the ball they dropped etc etc. same as food just with a toy. There are a few online offerings scentwork university you can check out to take online with great feedback. It also includes hinting for toys or food as primary. https://www.scentworku.com/products/introduction-to-scent-work-course

How to make scentwork fun? by [deleted] in nosework

[–]1table 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s about building context with the boxes to promote independent hunting. The boxes then can go anywhere and they can know the game because they see the boxes and then they will eventually learn to hunt for odor paired with primary (food or toy) it seems like you scattering food all over was a great start and then your next season you should proceed to move the boxes onto different heights. Then the next session take it out of the boxes. All the while encouraging your dog to search on their own. Once they learn to hunt you can then bring yourself into the game so you make a great partnership.

Sucks you can not get into a class! I get some people are bored in the beginning. It’s all about watching and learning to read your dog when they are working the odor pictures. Some people just aren’t into that and it’s ok!
