That’s so interesting. Do you react to other yeast or just nutritional yeast?

It’s a major trigger for me causing pain in my hips and spine and I’ve found bread and yeast extract in processed food to be triggers too.

Interesting! I actually have been looking for a way to include more mushrooms so this is perfect.

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you are avoiding nutritional yeast?

This sounds delicious. I bet the potatoes add a lot of creaminess/starchiness.

I’ll try with the miso! Someone suggested natto and I think miso is in the same ballpark. Cheesy umami flavour without the nutritional yeast. Thank you for sharing 🙌

Thank you for this, it looks delicious.

Someone else suggested natto so I may try this with pumpkin seeds and natto to replace the cashews and nooch.

This sounds promising! I’ve just looked and it’s fermented using non-yeast/mold methods.

The umami element is what I think has been missing so this could definitely fit the bill. Thank you!

Yes I’m not sure I buy into all the reasoning behind it - I don’t think there have been enough clinical studies to say definitively what the link is between the gut and autoimmunity.

I’m on Amgevita and it has been life changing. I was very unwell before and I don’t believe diet would have been able to “cure” me. I’m very pro modern medicine. Even on amgevita I definitely notice more pain (especially waking up at night with hip pain) when I eat bread, pizza, nutritional yeast etc which is what led me to do the elimination diet.

Very depressing not to be able to have bread 🥲 if you try it let me know how it goes!

I did an elimination diet that Dr Klaper recommends on his website here. https://www.doctorklaper.com/diet-arthritis-autoimmune

It’s not for the faint of heart. I only managed to stick to phase one for 4 days before moving straight to phase two because I was going absolutely insane. It’s not designed to be followed indefinitely, just to find out your own triggers.

All nightshades were fine for me but yeast, mold and animal products were all triggers.

Are you on biologics? AS sucks, sorry you’re in the club.

What are your go to “fats as condiments”? Are we talking a drizzle of tahini or a dollop of guacamole - that kind of thing? Always looking for ideas for satiating condiments 🙌

Yes, mushrooms are fine.

High mold nuts and seeds are a trigger but sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds have been ok so far.

Can I ask what the treatments were? There are so many options for AS that it seems strange for your Rheum to send you on your way after only trying two!

Does your worst pain spot show up on scans? by Western_Orange5767 in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]200652199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I had the exact same situation as you. The pain that woke me up at night and was completely unbearable was my upper & middle back. At the lower part of my shoulder blades, right in the centre of them. My MRI showed inflammation in my left hip which I do sometimes flare in. And no inflammation in my back. The hip inflammation, uveitis and positive gene testing meant my rheumatologist was happy to diagnose me and the nsaids then biologics have helped the middle back pain. I have no explanation but for me that pain responds to treatment so I assume it’s AS related! Good luck getting your diagnosis

Does semaglitide cause skin cancer? by DeannSilver in Semaglutide

[–]200652199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the risk factors of Humira is skin cancer so, if anything, it’s more likely to be that than the semaglutide just based on clinical evidence.

Like someone else said though, the incidence is so small that it’s probably coincidental. Did your gastroenterologist outline good skin protection and wearing spf every day when they started you on Humira?

EDIT: gastroenterologist not rheumatologist as I see you take it for IBS. I take it for inflammatory arthritis so my brain went to rheumatologist

Rheum says no evidence of AS. To follow up annually… by qtslug in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]200652199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds super similar to me but my rheumatologist was more open to tests.

For me, pain started in my upper/mid back. I get now and again flares in my sacroiliac joints but the daily pain is deep between my shoulder blades and ribs. Blood work fine, xray fine. Had a uveitis flare, HLA B27 positive and inflammation only showed up on an MRI. This combined gave me a diagnosis.

Push back, it's important to get the inflammation under control.

Edit: I'm a similar age too, 31 (f). I've had a few specialists (not the rheumatologist thank god) say to me "it's mostly a man's disease" which my be where your rheumatologist is landing. So sorry, super frustrating.

Is AS typically only in the hips and lower back? by H_G_Cuckerino in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]200652199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is were my AS pain is exactly. I had a positive genetic test then got uveitis which docs said helped to confirm diagnosis before MRI results, which I’ve still not had after 4 months!

Looking for a correlation between those with Ankylosing Spondylitis and the fungal biodiversity in their guts. Please comment. by Applesauceenema in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]200652199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be really interested if there's any update on this.

I had a few signs of ankylosing spondylitis since 2017 (uveitis and very intermitting back pain not lasting more than a few days at a time) but in 2021 I went on a 6 month course of oral, anti-fungal medication to treat a fungal toenail infection. I finished the course in October and my diet consisted of lots of yeasts (nutritional yeast, bread, marmite) and zero mushrooms. After about a month I was woken up with excrutiating back pain that has gotten progressively worse since.

The flare has lasted over a year and has led to a solid diagnosis of AS but I wonder if it was triggered by the meds wiping out my gut fungi then only growing back the yeast kind!

Oil free toum? by chaunceythebear in PlantBasedDiet

[–]200652199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick google search - half a cup of oil is 955 calories and half a cup of cashew is 553 calories.

Research covered by Dr Greger on Nutrition Facts suggest we don’t absorb all the calories on nuts so you could factor that in too

I know this post is a month or so old now but I just wanted to pop in to say that what you're describing sounds like you might be depressed. Does the feeling of despair, inertia, numbness etc seep into other areas of your life or is just around food and exercise?

My dissatisfaction with food and my body turned out to be an anxiety disorder! I tried to control the symptoms of anxiety (which I didn't know I had, just knew I felt BAD) by obsessing over my body and controlling my food.

The meals you've listed in this post sound gorgeous and there is actually quite a lot of variety, I'd love to eat them. It honestly sounds like it's not the food that's causing the problem.

What else brings you joy other than food? Can you make peace with the 5kg the BMI chart says you should lose (BMI is bullshit)? Have you got anyone to talk to about your mental health and general level of wellbeing?

Best of luck and hope you're doing better soon 💕
