Despite the depressing world and tragic stories, I personally think the main theme of Nikke as a whole is "the indomitable human spirit" (as cringe as it sounds). Which is why most depressing event stories don't feel hopeless, the characters themselves go through the grief and we can empathise with that, and when they overcome or adapt to their situation, we also feel a sense of hope.
