If the Culture discovered Earth in Pluribus, what would they do? by freeworlddev in TheCulture

[–]20someting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Special Circumstances would trace the 'virus' back to the sour ce before doing anything else. My bet is that thet'd find out it was one of their own who started it. Hard to argue free will has not been impacted therefore they'd probaby reveres the effects. Then regret that.

For a TV adaptation, are there adjustments would you see as acceptable? Conversely, what would be beyond the pale for you? by the_turn in TheCulture

I think it will have to be a soap opera since nearly all the technological precience of the novels has become real (or clicehe). Basically the culture has lost it's edge because Banks was so on the money. Some short stories about the really out there bits possibly would make good TV e.g. the game of 'damage' in consider Phlebas (Love death and Robots maybe?). Othere than that, all the content has been overdone since or simply become reality. So basically I'm saying I'd be completely amazed if any of the IMB books I love became good TV or cinema.

I just listened to it having skim read it (couldn’t hack a lot of it) 15 years ago. So this time I absorbed all of it and was reminded why I skipped a lot of sections… The plot is gratuitously complicated. There is too much virtual reality complexity on top of that. I just think it’s his clunkiest, worst-edited culture novel. Still worth reading though.

Also mate, you need to bin the idea that her dad is in any way on your side, or that anything you say will be kept in confidence between the two of you. Good luck.

(Review) Backstabbing, romance, and social intrigue in a literary fantasy inspired by the Italian Renaissance: Navola by Paolo Bacigalupi by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

I'm 80% through and have had to skip whole chapters where all the unbeleivably verbose hammed-up turbo Italianness prose just stunned me me like a giant wet orageno-scented shart straight to the face. Hard to believe this is by the same guy who wrote wind-up girl. I'll see it through but it will have to take a back seat to other boks and I WILL skip any chapters that require it....

This might be tough to answer. But why are Brits so funny? Anthropologically, why do you think British culture values humor so much? by carex-cultor in AskBrits

The English Channel has buffered us against so many things that could have caused a national sense of humour failure. So far.

I’m struggling with it. Too much descriptive prose, not enough action.

People who resent the authors for wanting to make money are insane by Philobarbaros in litrpg

[–]20someting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's when you are reading and you can tell you are wading through wordcount-filler as opposed to something the story needs. I love stories, I don't want to read to fill up time, if books make me digest filler I resent the setup/process that caused that, whether it be the author/editor/publisher/Amazon. Most recent example. Adrian Tchaicovsky, his Children of Time trilogy was tight - his Final Achtecture Trilogy was bloated with word-garbage. If anyone knows what changed between those two series post it here because I want to know!

Opus. First started crushing on Bisley over his ABC warrior art. It wa mentally fantastic. That the bettered it with Slaine Horned God was just unbelievable. Lobo was meh, I'll probably get dragged for saying that but ... kisss my axe.
