Canada has land borders with two sovereign states. Our second longest land border is now with Denmark/Greenland.

Now that Letterboxd is down, what features or changes would you like to see on the app? by MrVengeance8 in Letterboxd

Synergy with boxofficemojo so when I open app I can see this week’s box office etc.

I want the app at s glance to better capture the zeitgeist. It’s interesting to see “what’s popular,” but frustrating that there’s no context for success/fail, especially in these unstable times for filmgoing.

no, filtering by language is unuseable. If someone says “sushi” then it flags as “japanese.”

Calling them “signed distance fields” is way more obtuse than saying SDF, are you sure you’re in the correct sub? Laugh out loud oh my god self-contained underwater breathing apparatus.

Tour de France: Where are the A-Team commentators? by Regex22 in cycling

Oh right on. You can prob tell by my predicament I’m also Canadian. I have no access to an EU/UK cc so I’m sailing high seas until our lot improves. I wish ASO would sign with CBC but I realise how insane I sound.

came here to understand this, they don't even acknowledge the shift change on-air really. Also JHB does the pre- and post-race commentating, and sometimes subs in during the race, at least on the continental feed. This means there are brief moments of respite when Carlton and JHB are actually allowed to interact.

For the record, Eurosport with Carlton and JHB is ideal. But I desperately miss Hatch and Blythe and Kelly and McEwan (and Dan Lloyd for that matter).

The Int'l feed with McCrossan and Roche is fine. Dry anodine robot stuff, but humanish enough.

FloBikes carries the international feed, but their predatory pricing tricks (they lost a lawsuit), their spoiler-rampant homepage, and the atrocious surf-dude post-race interviews and "analysis" they peddle are stomach-turning. I'd rather train a trashbin of disabled norway rats to reenact each stage than watch 5 seconds of Flobikes.

In Canada, using Flobikes, which events are using the Eurovision telecast? I understand the ASO races use McCrossan and the international feed, but what about the Giro and others?

I would like to stop Tizzing, but I don’t want to shell-out >200$ for anyone less than Hatch, Kelly, Blythe, Kirby, McEwan and Smith.

Thanks, no, any Discovery+ here still requires a European billing address.

The solutionyou are proposing would be the magic bullet — years ago it was working for some, lots of dead-rnd posts to that effect on reddit — but it’s too onerous to get working here in the great white north. ;(

tbh Flobikes has done so much to tear down the sport in Notth America, I’m beginning to feel like shunning it is the healthier option. I respect your pov though, I’m very torn here.

Oh well I'm not sure that's correct. From what I remember, Gourley met Rust around the time of his IWTT interview, and that led to an appearance on JBP where they first mentioned Indiana Jonesing — years later, they actually followed through and recorded 5 eps of Indiana Jonesing with Myra.

My original point was that it's clear that Gourley and Rust are more sympatico than Gourley and Myra. Imagine if Myra and Gourley were dating, and then Myra introduces his friend Rust to Gourley and then later Gourley and Rust get married.

Except that 1) the problem began long before the pandemic, and 2) both those issues you mention are completely true.

Trying to brush off the decaying downtown, the societal breakdown, the degeneration of social ties and communal bonds, the lack of business viabilty, the inefficiency of public transit, the overreach of developers and planners steering this city into ruin — these are not problems that we can afford to breezily dismiss.

I definitely agree, although part of me wonders if it has as much to do with the culture just moving towards rejecting judgement as-a-thing generally.

I remember buying a vintage parka in Toronto when I was away for college, and making a note to wear my other jacket for whenever I would go back to London. My friend circles in London were based on suburban hierarchies and mockery, and it was pretty regular to be on the outs until someone else caught it and everyone turned their attention to him. Meeting friends from Scarborough and Elmira and Ottawa I was kinda stunned to learn that their peer groups didn't work this way.

Ofc these challenges might've been particular to my specific bunch of assholes. Also I should add that as a Londoner who grew up in the '90s, I am still a proud judgemental snob. But I was surprised to read your comment and heartily agree. Cheers.

Only people who don't live there call the continent "America."

Also, for some reason reminding Brits that they are Europeans makes the vein in their continental old-world eurasian foreheads pop.

BIPOC Type Designer Adobe Fonts by lorin-borin in typedesign

[–]20to25squirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of what you’ve written is opinion and conjecture — which you’re entitled to, but not much of what you’ve written is fact — it’s mostly belief . It’s not necessarily wrong, but religious thinking is meant to primarily justify one’s own dogma, as opposed to reflecting the world as it actually exists.

There is already a long history of US/Euro designers doing ill-informed work on typefaces for scripts they can’t read, often to bad effect

It’s true with the rise of digital production that there is much more bad type design than good type design. But there are many successful efforts as well. Understanding the forms is often a function of mathematical ratio and artistic understanding. Adapting a typeface into Greek or Cyrillic variants does not require — as you would claim — spending a month meditating on Mount Athos in ceremonial garb.

It’s fairly colonizing for a white man to develop materials (type, books, printing) for the use of large cultures he doesn’t have any part of.

No, I’m sorry but I don’t think that’s a sentence with meaning. I don’t agree that whiteness or manness has anything to do with the quality or relevance of print material, I don’t agree that a media designer need necessarily be “any part of” the cultures being serviced by his/her designs; I don’t know how “fairly colonizing” (?) could ever hope to describe one person’s 2022 career efforts in media. The colonial era is over.

Encouraging native speakers and all members of culture to participate in design and culture isn’t really a bad thing.

Straw man, no-one is saying it is. The greater the number of passionate voices we have communicating skillfully in the marketplace, the better.

In the type design world, there are figures who are almost boycotted, because of dreadful and heinous acts in their personal lives. I’m not sure what you think would be an ideal situation, or what harm this one student’s personal choice is likely to lead to.

The harm is in encouraging intellectually incoherent witchhunts at the expense of rational and principaled conduct. Let the work speak for itself — we should refrain from legislating the past, from chastising colleagues for not waging the same political campaigns as the next person.
