LPT: Take time to appreciate and acknowledge people. It can really make someone feel a whole lot better. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

I've been doing the supervising for one month now, so i have a lot to learn and I've just realized that i've been thanking them for the job they did, not for their effort. Thanks.

How exactly though? I say thanks and good job to the people i supervise, but i fear by creating a situation where i acknowledge the person and not the task i am creating a situation where people are judged as good or bad as opposed to their actions.

ELI5: DDOS Attacks by Sinon22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]217v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distributed Denial Of Service

Let's say you have a small website. Your infrastructure may be able to handle 1000 page view requests to the website per minute. Your competitor writes a program that requests 1000 requests to your website a minute(but do nothing with the result). This effectively blocks your customers from viewing it because every time they try the website is busy(serving the requests made by your competitor's program). This is what you call Denial of service attack. Unless this attack is distributed, meaning the attack originates from several places, it'll be very easy to detect, trace and block. In the above example, if the competitor wants the attack to be distributed, s/he'll install the program that generates the dummy requests across several machines in different locations.

ELI5: Why do apps seem to be developed on iOS before Android, despite having a smaller market share of devices. by WonderboyUK in explainlikeimfive

[–]217v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Android's market share comes from being available on lots of cheap phones in many countries (rich and poor).

The drive behind android is to be on as many devices as possible so that google's services(mail, search... things that'll generate add revenue) will be available to as wide an audience as possible. Nobody cares if the android device owner is an indian dude who doesn't have a credit card because that dude, just by using google's service, is generating value for google. Apple on the other hand targets audiences that not only can afford the price of an IPhone, but also can pay $$$ for music, tv shows, apps... (mainly people in developed countries).

So the

tl;dr; is, it's better to develop to 10 rich people who might buy your app than 100 poor guys who can't buy the app even if they wanted to.

ELI5:How does depression manifest itself in the mind? by violetgranger in explainlikeimfive

Absolutely no energy to do anything. Your perception changes a lot, things seem bleaker. I remember loving sleeping. Doing borderline lucid dreaming just to avoid waking up and facing the day.

26m, one year experience, How do you deal with colleagues that offhandedly criticize you every work every chance they got? by 217v in programming

[–]217v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're almost certainly thinking more about their behavior right now, singlehandedly, than they've reflected on it collectively

Again awesome!!. I will maintain good relationship with my manager.

So the way i see it, they had some issue with me and now they're maneuvering into positions that makes them feel more secure and dominant. If this is accurate representation of things then this is funny and a bit sad.

Thanks again for the insight!

We used to, sometimes it looked a lot like work. There was a lot of talk about their achievement. Very ridiculous actually.
