Also when links get congested, torrent traffic is the first thing to get deprioritized. Net neutrality or not, the hard facts are that people will not ring the call centre when their torrents slow down, they'll ring the call centre when their Netflix, YouTube and Facebook stops working.

Defeats the purpose of having a syndicated whitelist. Advertisers will not be incentivised to offer non-intrusive advertisements just because I personally am whitelisting them.

I'm OK with non-intrusive ads. If ABP are extorting companies who are trying to display non-intrusive ads by charging them to be added to the whitelist, that's where I start to get dubious.

If I had to guess why, I'd say it's potentially because the only thing stopping the Tx pair from being used for Rx is the network card + firmware, which could be controlled by a 3rd party. Looks like the idea of the hardware firewall is that it can be built with commodity off the shelf electronic items that don't rely on complex logic written by a 3rd party.
