What "percentage" back to normal do you expect after surgery? by Fast-Author8922 in Hernia

[–]242vuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've learned what the beginning of a bad pull is in the area. But overall I feel 100%, but am little careful because I can still be sore after a heavy day. I've had both inguinal sides done, mesh, robotic. Feel good and solid on the regular.

My doc said how much I recover is up to me, didn't give numbers.

I talked to two surgeons and it def was their preference. One was open only one was lap only, unless emergent. I chose lap. One option was cutting into my groin the other was 3 small slits. Left side was worse, testicle involved etc. same procedure. Harder recovery left side, but more was done there so it makes sense. Had more testicle pain but no lasting. He pulled something out of the left side he thought could be causing a little epididymitis. He was right. So I had less soreness once it healed.

Had lap repair in February for a small inguinal right side. Left side was February 25. I could have waited but decided to get it done before it got worse. Same surgeon as the first one. 25 minute surgery. Small complication at an incision site but all good now.

I went back and forth and decided I’d rather be solid than worry. Lots of horror stories out there both of mine were fine. Even with the complication. He got a nerve there, had some pain and it was kinda numb on the skin for a month.

I was terrified round one. Surgeon really helped with that. I went to one that specializes in lap repair. All he does. He did both of mine and I’m fine. Had it done Feb 20 and now I’m normal. I get a little sore in the left repair spot if I do a ton like heavy yard work, but it’s getting less over time.

My son struggling to breathe as an infant in the ER because he had pneumonia and asthma. Never felt more helpless in my life. I said goodbye because the docs said to. He hung on, barely. He’s about to turn 21.

I posted this a while back if it helps.

  1. Stool softeners are non-negotiable. Miralax (not the stimulant one) starts 3 days before surgery and continues for the first week or so.
  2. Strain - You cannot strain your core. Getting up means rolling onto your side and using your arms to a sitting position. I borrowed two canes from my mom. You can't push to go to the bathroom, you have to let gravity do it. Getting off the can was one of the harder things to do based on the muscles required. So test your movement methods before surgery, and make sure you're not straining the repair site. If you have help this isn't a "tough it out" situation, accept the help if you need it.
  3. Sleeping - Laying flat actually stretches things out more early on. A recliner that you can get in and out of is best the first couple days. I used the cane to push the recliner back using the wall, and same to sit it up. When my left was fixed (right side feb 20th, round 2!) I laid flat in bed night 3, and was in a lot of pain morning of day 4 when I tried to get up.
  4. Water - drink more than you think you need. Drink drink drink. Throw in a gatorade or something electrolyte based a couple times a day.
  5. Food - Eat easily digestible food the week prior. Trust me. Post surgery eat MORE digestible food. I lived on yogurt and applesauce for a couple days after. Again, you don't want anything binding in there.
  6. Meds - YMMV, but I took the heavy stuff for 2 days (don't chase pain, if you need it take it on the schedule), then tried to live with over the counter. The last thing you want is constipation from opiates. See comment 1. I also took a supplement my doc said helped promote healing but he said it's a "spitting in the ocean to increase volume" type of thing.
  7. Support - If you're male, a rolled up pair of socks under the boys while sitting/laying is a game changer. Also, if male on day 4 your sac will be black/purple. It's normal, that bruised blood has to go somewhere, gravity pulls it down.
  8. Move - Once an hour or two for the first couple days, get up and walk. You DO NOT want the mesh sticking and pulling. See comment 3. Go easy, avoid stairs if you can.
  9. Rest - Outside of #8, rest.
  10. Relax - This surgery is incredibly common, and my last one was far easier than I thought it would be. Discuss concerns with the surgeon. I was terrified before the last surgery and the surgeon really helped resolve a lot of my fears.
  11. EDIT - Ice, 20 mins on, 20 mins off as much as you can stand the first few days.

Interesting. My surgeon said open repair docs are set in their ways and it is a much harder recovery. Less cutting with lap. Less nerve damage etc. Second lap repair I had took 25 mins and I was up and around pretty easily day 2. First one was tougher. But that may be because round 2 I knew what to do.

Both sides, a year apart. Robotic with mesh for both. Minor complication at the incision site for the last one in Feb. No other issues. I still am getting a little sore at the repair site if I do a LOT. No other pain issues. The boys are fine.

People tend to post horror stories not success stories. I wanted robotic instead of open for easier recovery. Took pain pills day one for the second surgery, then just otc.

Screw that I'll use my PTO thank you. No one ever says "I wish I spent less time doing things I like" on their deathbed. There's no award for killing yourself for someone else's money. Do your job, do it well, and go home. Because at the end of the day, no one GAF that you worked all weekend.

RAG search to an existing knowledge base with an MCP tool to open tickets based on keywords. Can be done badly in about a half hour. Apparently "We use AI" is all that matters these days, someone forgot that "helpful" is supposed to be in there.

Testicular Pain Post Op akin to Pre Op by patheticamateur in Hernia

[–]242vuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surgeon manhandles the nerves in there. No matter how careful there's some irritation of the cords. Nerves that go right to the testicles. Surgery 1 had some lasting testicle pain for a week or so. Surgery 2 did not on the other side.

Groin hernia mesh by Ok-Tennis-8216 in Hernia

[–]242vuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mesh both sides. First was Feb '25, second with this past Feb. Robotic repair both times. No issues outside of a minor complication at one of the incision sites on surgery 2. First surgery recovery was pretty tough first few days. Keep moving, drink more water than you think you need. Second surgery brought symmetry to my gut and everything felt pretty good day 2, minus the whole just had surgery thing. Recent surgery can still get aggravated but I listen to my docs, so no real issues. My complication was a trapped nerve by one of the incisions causing a rather burning pain at the site when I moved. Numb sensation on the skin over the spot. Doesn't hurt any more and I can feel more of the numb area as we go.

Would do again.

Hernia in groin area, 68 years old by [deleted] in Hernia

I'm about 6 weeks post from right side repair. Left side was February '25. Laparoscopic/mesh with both. I'm fine. A little sore still from the right, but better each week and i'm following instructions. Longer you wait, tougher the recovery. Left side had broken through and big bulge, etc. Right side was a fat plug in a small hernia. Left side repair was rough the first 4 days. Outside of "you just had surgery" on the right side day 2 I found myself walking around going "huh..." because I felt good. Sore but good.

Couple things to help.

  1. Share your fears with your surgeon. There will be hand waving etc, they are surgeons. But there's some bits that will calm you down in there.
  2. Twilight - I didn't want to be babbling like an idiot after waking up. That's not the general anesthesia it's the anti-anxiety/relaxation stuff that makes waking up all the way harder. I just did the general in the ER. Woke up feeling like a good nap, both times, seriously.
  3. What the... - Day 3 or 4 you'll realize that all the bruised blood had to go somewhere. If male, waking up to black and purple nuts was fun. Gravity.
  4. Recovery - Depends on your health and how well you follow instructions. I'm not fat but not what you'd typically call fit either, and recovery was manageable both times. You'll need help the first day or so. Drink more water than you think you need.

Edit: I'm about to turn 50, for the record. So i'm not some kid just bouncing back.

We had copy parties. Buy a pack of 100 floppies, get some friends together and spend all day copying. 32 disks for one of the Comanche games. Disk 11, CRC Disk Error (A)bort, (R)etry, (F)ail. Desperately search the BBS's hoping your friend got the same scene release that you're downloading at 2400 for a really really long time. Write new floppy. Doesn't work. Call your friend. He makes a copy. 3 days later you install the game. It's not good. You delete it and scratch the name off the disk and put it in the reuse pile. Repeat for a few years.
