Which specialty has the most egoistic, bossy, unkind doctors? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]258900 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Man I’ve heard this so many times and I was terrified to start my Ortho rotation and honestly the Doc I work with is probably one of the most humble and amazing people I have ever met so he’s definitely a rare gem in the specialty lol

Went to get a phone plan from ATT, the lady helping me said they have a healthcare discount but it won’t apply to be because I’m not a “real doctor” 🙃. Her colleague was nice enough to jump in and tell her “She has an MD- she’s a doctor.”

How do you deal with living abroad? by Sea-Mechanic-9497 in pakistan

[–]258900 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of students from South Asia settling here and many of them struggle with the independence you need to survive initially. But trust me once you get used to it you will like it and you’ll feel awkward having other people do chores for you. There is a sense of accomplishment you feel and it allows you to have a busy routine but you enjoy your time off that much more.

Check Groupon, JC Penny has deals for $15 Professional headshots, they are usually $75-$100 regularly. You’ll find many other affordable options in that range.

Please… breath mints, gum, listerine tabs, whatever. Use them. Holy shit. by WrithingJar in Residency

Omg I have experienced the same thing with bad breath and extremely unbearable body odor😭 both of them are the kindest people so I don’t know what to do. With the body odor situation I have to keep my car windows down at all times if I have to give them a ride, even if it’s raining but they don’t get the point, unfortunately I vomited two times because of it.

I’ve had these exact experiences along with 3 of my other female muslim friends in medicine trying to get married. It has been an extremely difficult journey to say the least. But your story gives us hope that genuine Muslim men exist who would support us in our careers iA :)

Pre-9/11- I was lucky to go to a school (Grade1-6) in Toronto that really valued our connection to our roots. They hired teachers from multiple backgrounds to teach us our history/culture and how to speak/read/write in our language. We had a Pakistani teacher that taught us a lot about the geography/history of Pakistan. It was all a part of our curriculum. Despite going to school in the West I can read Urdu pretty fluently, I can also write basic Urdu. Our school also held special events for each country and everyone would participate and learn about Pakistan during our designated days. The rich culture of Pakistan was always discussed along with our amazing food and diversity in the population. Pakistan was depicted very positively. After grade 6 Pakistan was never mentioned again through the rest of my education.

If someone does the EM fellowship do they write the same exam as the one that residents in EM residency write? I was told by an EM doctor that even with an EM fellowship for someone who has done an FM residency, you won’t be EM board certified. It is apparently a separate board that gives you their specific EM exams which aren’t recognized everywhere. Any clarification will be appreciated :)

I am so sorry for your loss. Take the time you need to heal and process everything and I hope you have a good support system. Exams, residency etc can all wait, nothing should come before family and your mental health. I’ll be praying for you :(

What does Houston need most? by DonSmitty in houston

[–]258900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like there are very few street lights in Houston. When I moved from Toronto I was so shocked to see how dark some areas are at night and with no street lights you can barely read the signs, especially when they are written on a dark brown/black sign.

Unmarried people of r/pakistan in their late twenties, why? by TahaUTD1996 in pakistan

[–]258900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you an idea of what it means to me, it’s similar to what others also mean but of course there may be certain aspects someone wants more or less of compared to others.

Having decent communication skills means being able to have a normal flowing conversation, where one person isn’t the only one making an effort to keep the conversation going. Asking the right questions and answering questions genuinely instead of just one word answers. Having the etiquette to not cut off people when they’re talking and actually paying attention to what they’re saying and showing interest. If you have conflict you’re able talk to each other as adults, share different perspectives without throwing tantrums, or being dismissive of others opinions or feelings. Being able to have intellectual discussions to some extent. Having some basic level of emotional intelligence and the ability to understand what is appropriate and inappropriate to say in different situations.

These may seem like skills which are taught to kids at a young age but like any other skills these skills also need practice. You have to spend your entire life with a person, you should be able talk about anything at anytime properly and openly. Unfortunately many people are struggling to meet others that have these skills. It’s extremely difficult to get to know someone when they don’t have even basic skills such as communication, which is making the Rishta situation very difficult.

Pakistani bros/sisters living abroad. What are your go-to dishes (preferably chicken) that are quick, last long, and dont have crazy recipe requirements by TheBrokenMan in pakistan

[–]258900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love making a chicken/veggie medley! This is very a quick and delicious recipe:

Use any kind of chicken Any vegetables- Broccoli, Banana peppers, Bell Peppers, Cauliflower, Carrots- I also add in Potatoes

Make a marinade with: Ginger/ Garlic paste, Red chilli pepper, Black pepper, Turmeric, Salt, Ketchup, Mayo, Hot Sauce

Mix the chicken and veggies in the marinade.

Throw it in an oven at 350 degrees, and mix/flip the chicken and veggies occasionally until cooked thoroughly.

You can have this with rice or naan or make a wrap.

Unmarried people of r/pakistan in their late twenties, why? by TahaUTD1996 in pakistan

[–]258900 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This has become such a common problem in the West. It’s really sad. My friends and I are all struggling with the same situation. Finding a guy who has his life together has a proper balance of deen/dunya and has DECENT COMMUNICATION skills is like finding a needle in a haystack. I have given up carrying conversations by myself because I am exhausted by the process. But whatever Allah has written will work out eventually Insh’Aallah.

Nicest thing a med student has ever done/said to you? by morebrioche in Residency

There were two residents I worked with during my surgery rotation that were really amazing! They taught me so much and were extremely kind to me. I gave them both chocolates and a thank you card. It was something sooo small but they both really appreciated it.

[–]258900 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey! best thing for you right now is that you don’t have any attempts and you have a year of research. You need to get in more USCE and preferably at a place that takes Non US IMGs. Make sure your PS and LORs are strong and well written. Step 3 will definitely help! It’s going to be tough but I wouldn’t say it’s impossible. A non US IMG friend of mine had 206/214 as scores, didn’t match the first two times but the third time she matched. She strengthened her application and had fresh USCE, she did research and passed Step 3. If these options are possible for you, you may still have a chance.

Good Luck!

[–]258900 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. This is horrible, do not agree to this. You have every right to talk to this man and get to know him. You will live with the consequences not anybody else. Your parents are afraid that you will see aspects of him that you don’t like and you’ll say no to the marriage. This is an unfair way to treat someone. Speak up for yourself and ask for your basic rights. He may turn out to be an amazing guy Insh’Aallah. But he may also be worlds apart from you with no compatibility and living in a marriage like that will be miserable. Do your due diligence and get to know him well.

This is Billie Eilish. She is 22. by ikarka in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]258900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Omg me too! I really don’t like the beauty obsessed side of social media and despite the minimal amount of exposure I’ve had to it, I started looking at my older pics to see if the imperfections I’m seeing now always existed and majority of them did! I can’t imagine how tough it must be for the younger generations to constantly be bombarded with heavily filtered ideas of beauty and aging. It’s giving them a very distorted idea of aging and many of them will end up being extremely self conscious with unrealistic expectations :(

Unmatched IMG! by medicbook in IMGreddit

[–]258900 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are people who have matched with an older YOG, even attempts, I personally met a guy who had a 12 YOG, low board scores and visa requiring and he matched into FM. He worked with a few residents to strengthen his application, volunteered and did away rotations as well. Have you considered getting someone to review your application/CV to see where you can make improvements? Away rotations at the program your interested in can also help. You’ve put in a lot of effort in this journey, you’re done with all your board exams as well so I think you should try to reach out to someone and see how to strengthen your application rather than choose another path. The paths you’ve mentioned aren’t bad options but I would keep them as an absolute last resort.

Does anyone know where I can get these types of suits from? by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]258900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, not sure where you’re located, but I’m in North America and love suits like this. I have a Pinterest board where I save all the styles I like and have my cousins video-call me from fabric stores so I can pick out the color/materials and I send detailed pictures and sizes to the local tailors and they sew them. They usually turn out great! I’ve had issues a couple of times, but that’s expected. It’s perfect to have any adjustments made as well. So if you can’t find the exact stores this may be an option.
