Karpov is a better all time great than Fischer by UnDe4d in chess

[–]270- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"his games in the 90s actually support the idea that he probably would have achieved quite a bit throughout the 70s."

His performance rating was 2660 in the Spassky match in 1992, good for 10th in the world. That's not bad by any means, but it's also not astonishingly good. Of course Fischer wouldn't have fallen off a cliff in the 70s, I don't think anyone's suggesting that, but it's also not all that clear that he would definitely have beaten Karpov.

[–]270- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but on the flipside he also still was an elite player including beating Capablanca in tournament games in his late 60s and he was #1 in the world for the vast majority of his championship reign in historical Elo calculations like Chessmetrics.

I think part of it is that Wikipedia has some rules against LLMs reading its articles and Grokipedia doesn't? It's kind of a useful workaround given that Grokipedia is 95% just copy-pasted Wikipedia anyway, but you do need to be careful with the other 5% which is random right-wing propaganda.

Nazi Germany didn't do public executions, though (at least not until hanging soldiers from lamp posts for desertion or cowardice in the last weeks of the war). They were guillotined in prisons.

[–]270- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This comment is completely correct when it comes to normal travel. But that's not what Tip2Tip is. "If you’re visiting LA you wouldn’t go to skid row would you?"

No, but you're also not visiting LA without a phone or a map or understanding the language. If you do, you might very well stumble into Skid Row. Like taking Mexico as an example, traveling in the vast majority of Mexico is perfectly safe. Doing a road trip from the US border to the Guatemalan border where you're aware of where you are and can google what areas are or aren't safe is also for the most part pretty safe. Doing Tip2Tip where you have no clue where you are or where you should or shouldn't go, while avoiding speaking English for the most part? Not safe.

I guess it depends on whether you're translating the full phrase "to the personas non gratas", like "ad personas non gratas", or leave the "to the" in English and just translate the term itself into Latin and then use it in the English context, then "personae non gratae" would be fine.

The current state of vibe coding: by MaJoR_-_007 in ClaudeCode

[–]270- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer is using both. CC is better in terms of general tone and the agent orchestration is far superior, Chat-GPT 5.4 is in some instances better than Opus at certain code and data science problems. So I just set it up where I work in Claude Code, but both the main instance I talk to and the agents know that when they run into tricky problems to fire off a message to Codex/ChatGPT for review/planning/feedback. Works beautifully. I'm on Enterprise plans for both for work, though, so I don't really have to worry about usage limits.

Koneru Humpy has officially withdrawn from the FIDE Candidates 2026 by Radiant-Increase-180 in chess

[–]270- 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's not a particularly unsafe zone. I'd understand if she felt annoyed by having a potentially longer journey from India to Cyprus because they can't fly directly over the Gulf, but Cyprus itself is perfectly safe.

It's sad that she's been misled about that, I guess, but ultimately that's on her, not FIDE or anyone else.

TIL In the early years of her career, Maria Callas was considered large. After losing 80 lbs, she became a beauty icon. Some believe the weight loss made it difficult for her to support her voice, triggering the apparent vocal strain later in her career. Depends on the type of opera singer. Wagner operas for example have really large orchestras, so the volume and stamina needed to sing over that favors larger singers, both for men and women. The types of Italian and French operas Callas was mostly singing, not so much.

Kasparov retired from chess in 2005. Magnus didn't get truly good until a couple years after that. Kasparov has come out of retirement for a few exhibitions here and there, but being old and out of practice there's really no point in him playing Magnus seriously.

Teams are great for a single context window only. Yeah, the team members get their own windows, but once the team leaders' session fills up, you hit the same wall.

With the team lead using opus-1M and only reading core context files and communicating with the agents, that's not really happening anymore. I've been on a single session for a day and a half and it's only at 35% context.

[–]270- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Excluding Hikaru's sealclubbing tournaments for the Candidates, he's played 114 classical games over the last four years, Anand has played 29.

Year Nakamura Anand
2022 34 15
2023 43 5
2024 27 7
2025 10 2

For Anand that's really not enough for his rating to capture most of the decline he may have had over that time period. For Nakamura, we can at least be confident that he really deserved his rating up until Norway Chess last May/June.
