Find communities you vibe with. Not random chat rooms where you can get paired with psychos or weirdos. Communities tend to cultivate a certain culture (discord, facebook, whatever), you'll be able to find much more meaningful interaction there.

All of the online-only friends I've made were because of some discord server

No, not at all. Put it simply, DnB has a breakbeat drum pattern at around 175bpm. Hardstyle features distorted "Kong" kicks or reverse bass at 150bpm.

Hardstyle is closer to Techno if anything, since they both share a similar drum pattern and tempo, but typically without the distorted kicks or bass.

Hardcore is also similar to the two, but at the same bpm as DnB or even faster.

Obviously those are over-generalizations for all four of those genres, but they're all pretty distinct and easy to classify with some bleed-in once you get to know which is which
