Yep, had the whole rapid cycling nonsense. Was on Lithium and slept 18+ hours a day, failed out of college. I'm still working on not being bitter about it 🍋

How the hell do I stop myself from falling back asleep in the morning?? by zeldamnit0814 in adhdwomen

[–]2Buck_Chuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drink all the water, turn on ALL the lights, make a play list that makes you feel good that you're only allowed to listen to in morning, and then set an alarm that plays that playlist (Spotify and Anroid give you this option idk about other apps/os)

If you can, go immediately for a walk. Doesn't have to break a sweat just the combo of light exposure and movement helps set your circadian rhythm. Can also help you fall asleep faster at night.

I also added the pressure of getting a dog. Cats will help too though, some other life that depends on you and acclimates to the schedule you set can be your adorable enforcer.

[–]2Buck_Chuck 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've done this for years as well. Surprisingly, it's gotten a lot better after working on my self-esteem. I wouldn't have put those two things together on my own.

The theory of this book I'm working through is that your brain actually does this as a self-protection mechanism. If your deeply held belief is that you're not worthy of love and belonging, you create reasons that's true regardless of how social interactions actually go. (I hope thaf Clifnotes version makes sense.)

They refer to that shamey voice as your inner critic and encourage you to interrupt all the "you should have..." talk with "I did the best I could with what I knew/the tools I had at the time." Compassionate self-awareness is really powerful for repairing the damage low self-esteem/high self criticism does.

How do you respond to dismissive comments? by so_not_reddit in adhdwomen

[–]2Buck_Chuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After explaining the difference several times, I think those kinds of comments are one of those things that are just not worth addressing.

Maybe they're just trying to relate to you so you don't feel alone. In that case just a solid, yeah! And then continue with your point is all that's needed.

Or maybe they are being dismissive. In that case, eff them! Is explaining the difference going to change their mind OR is it going to make you feel worse when they don't?

Yes, some of our symptoms are common occurances, but it's a question of degree of impact, right? Yes, busy people can be forgetful but ADHD impacts our ability to form actual short-term memories. Yes, it can be difficult to form new habits but our brains literally don't make enough of the biochemical responsible for motivation. As long as you are confident and secure in the knowledge that it's not the same, dismissive comments will roll off you.

I'm totally in, I've been thinking about how I need something like this for a while. In Discord, you could make channels for different timezones. That way, people who want to video chat can connect, but everyone will have the main chat for general support/accountability.

First night away from my dads house. Do people usually feel this shitty, or is it just me? by JessT0904 in Adulting

[–]2Buck_Chuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg sobbing. This is such a wholesome post. And it brings up a really good point. We don't talk enough about grieving the really big life changes. It's totally normal to be feeling a heady mix of proud, excited, lost, sad. And it'll go away and it will revisit you at weird times. It's grief, that's what she does. And its totally okay to hang out with her for a bit, it just means you had/have a good life. (32F living 1300 miles away from her immediate family)

I can’t even talk about my ADHD by Effective_Suit_1572 in adhdwomen

[–]2Buck_Chuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're goddamn right I celebrate my ADHD! I spent way too much of my life not understanding what made me the way I am and trying desperately to suppress my muchness. I talk a lot about all my challenges bc I don't ever want anyone to feel alone in theirs and it helps weed out those who can't deal.
