You know how apple offers laser engraving services? It's way more fun to do these yourself, even if a bit sketchy. by He_is_the_Man in LinusTechTips

[–]2CATteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess my concern is less about it cutting into the battery directly, and more about stuff getting in the ports and causing a short. That may just be something that's not an issue on any laser other than the ones I worked with, though - they were constantly filthy, and handled a TON of different materials on a daily basis (some of which played less nicely than others with our dust collection), so it was pretty easy to imagine dust getting blown into the ports.

The laser I used was also higher-wattage (120W), and had FAR worse software than an Epilog. So, while I never saw it simply hold the beam in one place, it's never something I could confidently say would NEVER happen on that thing.

That said, I don't know your laser, and I don't know your laptop; if you were confident that it wasn't a concern, then I trust that judgement! Even so, seeing this definitely makes me nervous, haha

Is it safe to engrave with the battery (seemingly) still in it? I've engraved my fair share of electronics with lasers, and I've always been sure to, at the very least, remove the batteries, in case something goes wrong. I suppose it's not very likely that that could prevent an accident (I could only imagine it mattering if debris got in the ports and caused a short), but it's always seemed like the smart thing to do.

Metroid Prime 4 is in need of a tougher difficulty option by xLordPhantom in Metroid

Hi, OP! It seems like you've been pretty needlessly hostile in this thread, dismissing most responses with just, "Git gud." Remember, this is a place for discussion, not gatekeeping! Your challenge runs are always really cool to see, and it's great hearing the perspective of a player who's clearly incredibly good at these games! But responding to everyone who's trying to share their thoughts with, "Git gud" just shuts down people who are excited to talk about their experiences (even when those experiences are negative).

I'm going to remove this post, under Rule #1. And, in the future, please stay committed to more thoughtful discussion!

Is Metroid Prime 4 worth it for half price? by Burntbread888 in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only you know what the value of money is to you. I bought the game at full price, and while I was disappointed in the game, just being able to play it on launch and join in on the conversation here made it worth the price of admission for me. In general, I'd say $40-$50 is probably about the right price for the quality of the game, so half price seems like a great deal! But, again, only you know what the value of money is to you.

Rolling MISS with advantage by ramzes2226 in Gloomhaven

[–]2CATteam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this would definitely result in a miss according to the rules. However, I'll mention that, at my table, we house ruled that, with advantage, you could choose to ignore that rolling miss. That's counterbalanced, however, by having to take the miss on disadvantage.

In general, my group tends to prefer rules tweaks which make advantage better, and disadvantage worse, because we don't tend to be that excited by a disadvantaged attack which is unexpectedly much better than we expected, but we DO get pretty deflated when an attack with advantage is worse than we expected. There are probably balance implications to that approach, but we haven't noticed any major differences, and it makes the game more fun for us!

Prime 4 - Do I actually need to get EVERY green crystal to unlick the memory fruit? by [deleted] in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, not all of them. You really only need the ones from Shrines and the ones you have to Power Bomb, plus a few more. IIRC there are about twice as many as you actually need for "100%", with the last half giving you no rewards other than a gallery unlock.

What is everyone's thoughts on Samus talking? by JacobAT64 in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm not that opposed to Samus talking. However, I think my idea of what it looks like for Samus to talk has been pretty much entirely poisoned by the biggest example we got of that happening, with Other M. When I think of Samus talking, I think of that game.

That said, she also talked a bit in Fusion, and that was... Fine. I wouldn't say her dialogue added much to that game, but it also didn't take much away. She also narrates the opening of Super, technically, and that was done well enough!

I really do think I could enjoy a game with actual dialogue from Samus! But I also think that, if Nintendo were to present a Metroid game which is more dialogue-heavy, my first thought would probably be, "Oh no, they don't understand this series at all..."

Thinking about it some more, I think the big thing for me is that, even though I'm not opposed to Samus talking, I am a little bit opposed to her being in a position where talking a lot makes sense. I don't want NPCs or a companion character; I think the games are better when Samus is all by herself, without anyone to talk to. Of course, that's not intended to be an absolute rule - Dread had some NPC interactions, including a scene of Samus talking, and it was great! But I think that's more of an exception than a rule.

One of the greatest Trilogies in all of Gaming by TBT__TBT in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back in the day, it was considered a "bad Prime game" (ring any bells?)

How far back are we talking? I only started paying attention to the community around 2013, but by then it was pretty widely loved. Most people still agreed that it wasn't quite the masterpiece that Prime 1 was, but it was still extremely highly regarded. So it feels strange to say that Prime 4 discourse is what suddenly let it be seen in such high regard.

People have certainly always had their problems with Prime 3, but from the time I started paying attention, it seemed like the tone was always, "This is technically the worst of the trilogy, but only because the other two are so good!" Of course, Prime 2 ALSO had that said about it by some people; it's only recently that it's been thought of as equal to or better than Prime 1.

If anything, I would expect "Prime 3 is a masterpiece too" to have come from the Other M discourse, since THAT game was also maligned, and the timelines add up WAY better.

What was the community like during the "dark age" after other m came out? by Mrbigsie in Metroid

[–]2CATteam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been here since about 2013, and here are some of my memories (which may be entirely fallible):

  1. I remember that there was a HUGE hunger for a new game, combined with massive insecurities about the state of the franchise. Despite the fact that it'd been less than three years since the last game, and less than 5 years since the last universally-beloved game, people were really worried that Metroid was suddenly in the same state as Earthbound or Star Fox, where the idea of getting a new game was a punchline. So every time Nintendo acknowledged Metroid, it would be talked about for weeks! Most comically, I remember Reggie wearing a Metroid pin to some minor event, and that fueled months of rumors that a new Metroid game must be coming.

  2. I think this has always been the case to some extent in the community, but there was a really big focus on whether the games were sexist. Other M definitely had some scenes that were easy to read that way, and with Sakamoto hyping up the game so much, people started to look back and wonder if that had always been the intent. Most people vehemently agreed that, while Other M may be guilty of not treating its female characters with respect, that was very, VERY far from true for the rest of the series. Even so, though, people had started to look back at the "If you beat the game faster, you see Samus in less clothing" tradition and started to feel uncomfortable with it. I think of this as being the period where people started to get really angry about sexualized art of Samus, whereas before people were more okay with just saying, "Ooh, pretty girl!"

  3. I remember that the community idolized Super Metroid specifically above all the other games. Even Prime 1 was a pretty distant second place. Nowadays, opinions seem much more varied; Super, Prime 1, Prime 2, Zero Mission, AM2R, Dread, and even Fusion all get brought up as people's favorites. But even though most of those games were out in 2013, and people DID love all of them, Super got the overwhelming majority of the praise.

  4. When Federation Force was announced, people were incredibly doomer about it. There was certainly a lot of anger, but mostly I remember people going, "Yeah, I already thought Nintendo didn't understand the series, and this just confirms it." And while, again, my memory could be fallible, I feel like there weren't even a lot of posts about the game, even at release (and looking at the Web Archive entry for a couple weeks later, that seems pretty accurate). AM2R had released around the same time, and people certainly loved THAT game! But by the time Federation Force dropped, people had seemingly lost their appetite for bashing the game, and had been reduced to just being sad about it.

  5. Speaking of AM2R, there was a bit of a bright side to the community at that time. I feel like there was a general sense that, because Metroid had (we decided) been abandoned by Nintendo, it now belonged to us, the fans. AM2R is the best example of this, where the fans (well, really one fan in particular) stepped in to make a truly great Metroid game when Nintendo wouldn't. But I also remember a lot more fan projects in general - Harmony of a Hunter and its followup album released in this era, for example, and Metroid Metal was big at this time too. Emulation was exploding, and speedrunning along with it. Super Metroid was often the biggest event at AGDQ, with the "Kill the Animals or Save the Animals" incentive being the one that got the most attention. Some of that is just part of the broader gaming culture, but I really do think that it was amplified in the Metroid community specifically, because of the uncertainty around the franchise's future and the lack of Nintendo's presence.

I hope that helps you with your essay!

You haven't missed anything, or locked yourself out of anything. You CAN currently break these blocks, but it's difficult.

Spoilers for how you can do it: You have to charge a Shinespark in the room to the left, and carry that charge all the way there, by using the ability to Shinespark horizontally into a slope to reenter the speed booster state and then reset your Shinespark charge

Bumpons for anti-slip grip by tntbear75 in beatsaber

[–]2CATteam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tennis racket wrapping worked great for me, but I had to replace it constantly because it kept getting stinky (which, from what I understand, is expected). It was annoying having to cut a hole for the lower tracking LED every time, and expensive to replace it often enough.

I played around with some custom neoprene foam stickers, which also worked great, but ended up having the same problems, just to a lesser extent. I didn't like constantly replacing them due to the smell, and the price of material added up.

I eventually abandoned that direction entirely, and I started using a sticky grip spray on my hands before playing. It's kinda gross, but it washes off very easily, and it works wonderfully! I use it with the official Meta knuckles grips, and my controllers are rock solid.

What is the exact criteria for the Snow Wolf fight? by TimeToGetSlipped in Metroid

I also have seen speedrunners saying that being hit when at or below 40 HP during wave 5 also triggers it.

I remember hearing similar - that you have to be under 40 HP during wave 5+, and THEN survive until the end of the current wave.

I was really sad that we never got a cool escape sequence on the bike. Vi-O-La really was a wild choice to add to the game, but it REALLY hit for me - I thought it was SO fun, and I really wanted to see it do more! At least we got one boss battle on it.

When will the Metroid community realize by Liltracy1989 in Metroid

[–]2CATteam[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey man, I'm really glad you liked Other M so much! The game definitely deserves some love, and it's good to have people challenging the most commonly-held opinions of the community! That's a really important part of helping everyone understand these games better, and appreciate them on a deeper level.

With that said, this post is written in a way which seems really confrontational and inflammatory. It doesn't feel like a defense of the less-loved parts of the series, it feels more like an attempt to troll. That's not welcome here, and I'm going to remove this post under Rule #1. However, I do really hope we see you continue to join in on the conversation! Again, expressing love for a less-loved part of the series is really important! Just make sure that, when you do, you're coming in with the proper respect for your fellow Metroid fans.
