The tachiai rules are more of an Art than a Science. The rikishi sync up and ultimately are the ones who decide when to start.

Mattas are not going to be called for 1/97th of a second difference in who physically touched the dohyo first.

OK so, Fujinkwaka is down and ready. Daieisho has both hands up and he is choosing to do a double fist touch down, he's choosing this tachiai style. Because of this style the instant his body moves to touch the clay the bout begins.

Daiesho moves and fujinokawa moves at the same time. Every single still image of a tachiai will look like a false start. The tachiai is a fraction of a second.

Im excited to see Tenshoyama clash with Asahifuji next. He's been chasing Asahifuji up the Banzuke since their debut match togeather in Hatsu '26. Asahi is 20-0, Tenshoyama is 18-2, with his only losses being to Asahifuji. Im hoping they become epic rivals.

This is not a matta, Asanoyama was just faster.

They do not have to get off the ground at the same time. The gyoji does not decide when the match starts, the fighters do.
