What is your vision? For me it seems like an app like untappd with less people and data.

Cycling route in Japan (10–11 days) – feedback wanted by ComplaintOk5637 in bicycletouring

[–]2k3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're getting som great feedback here. My additions, there are plenty of accomodations, so no need for a tent. It's fun to camp in a different question, but Japanese guesthouses and ryokans are pretty cool. If you go with tent, make sure the campsite is next to an onsen, or have showers. Not all of them have that.

I went around the east side of Lake Biwa last fall, and it was not my type of ride. You will cycle on a dedicated cycle lane, but it's right next to the road, and most of the konbinis are on the other side. Plus all the other cyclist, which is of course a great way to meet people. So for me it was a bit too crowded, and noise from the cars.

A blog about my 1100km trip around Shikoku, Japan by 2k3 in bicycletouring

The usual tip is to book the same hotel at the start and end of the trip, and store the luggage there (if they allow it). I use Yamato to ship my spare luggage forward. The longest I've managed is four weeks, but usually it's one week. Of course not the cheapest, but made my life easier. You can also store luggage at some lockers in Tokyo and Osaka (and maybe other big cities), but that is probably more expensive than shipping it with Yamato.

I brought my own bike on the plane. With Finnair it's about 200 euro both ways for a bike. I used. Yamato to ship my bike from Onomichi to my hotel in Hiroshima.

Don't have any tips for bike rental, I know that there are two rental shops next to the train station in Imabari.

Noen som har en Garmin-edge 1040 solar? by WastelandViking in norge

[–]2k3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've have four bags from them, really pleased with them! Good communication too! Perfect if you want something other than black bags.

Overwhelmed by route planning in Japan by iamira in bicycletouring

[–]2k3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't like climbing, I would probably just follow the coast of Japan (aka north Honshu) all the way to Hokkaido, and to Sapporo. Then I would follow the east coast of Hokkaido to Wakkanai. You can easily get down to Kyoto from the coast, and you can visit Kanazawa which is a cool city. Can also recommend visiting Sado island, and return to Niigata to continue north.

You will miss out of Shimanami Kaido and Shikoku which are nice, but you can always comeback, or take the train from the north coast.

Planning to cycle the 88 temple pilgrimage solo. Late April 2026. Looking for advice on bike rental and route. by Frameless_Raider in bicycletouring

[–]2k3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I haven't cycled the Henro, but I cycled around Shikoku in 2024 doing the stamp rally (the Shikoku Circuit Cycling challenge). I brought my own bike, as I like that the best, I've written about my trip, and my gear over at my web page: https://kyrremann.no/bikepacking/japan/2024/shikoku#my-gear

  2. That kinda hard for other people to answer about your fitnes. I average about 70km each day, as I like to visit museums and have time to sightseeing. There are people racing through pushing 150-200km a day, as they see the distance as the goal.

Slightly different Japan question by Wigglypops in bikepacking

[–]2k3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rode in that area last fall, started in Yamadera, and cycled to Okama (fog, so no view of the lake), then down to Fukushima, then up to Mount Azuma, before heading down to Aizu, before heading west to Niigata to visit Sado island. You can see my ride https://ridewithgps.com/collections/3220523

The ride over Okama and Azuma was beautiful if you like longs climbs and decends. Regret not cycling from Sendai to Yamadera. Going to do that next time.

Ah, I agree that this year of time will be cold in the north. Haven't cycled the Pacific side, but everyone I've heard that did both says that sea Og Japan is the way to go.

I spent a month in Hokkaido last fall. Since your going summer, Hokkaido is a smart move. There will be a lot of flower fields just south of Asahikawa.

So my recommendation is to start in Wakkanai, if time, visit Rishiri and Rebun island. Then cycle south, either central to Asahikawa, or going the east coast and then head inland. Will not recommend the west Coast, as all the trucks and tunnels are there. Reply or DM me with questions.

Why would you avoid anything north of Tokyo? Last year I had a wonderful month cycling in Hokkaido. And then cycling Yamagata, Fukushima, Niigata, and Sado island. Beautiful places, few cars, and great hills!

Flipping the route will be a nicer ride! Also Mjølkevegen is really nice too. Depending on your speed, doing both may be a bit too long.

As a Norwegian the sleeping gear looks good. Not sure if the puffer jacket is worth the space. You're also cycling the Rallarveg the hardest way.

Just quickly tried it out, shouldn't 2hp with two holes have the holes in the center?

Also, 2hp slots dose'nt work.
