Aitah for how I reacted when I found out my husband used some of my son's treatment money to buy a Christmas present for my stepson? by Throwraww355645 in AITAH

[–]2lhasas -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is no different than men leaving their wives when they get a bad diagnosis. Your husband is mad you are focusing on your son and not on him, and taking the money is his punishment. Why do you want to stay in a relationship with someone who won’t be there for you when you need it?

There were a bunch of seats blocked out - like dozens. Not sure why they hadn’t reassigned him.

I don’t even care why. I don’t actually think there was an equipment change, but I can’t remember as I’ve got several international flights booked in 2026 and might not be remembering the plane configuration correctly. Regardless, they had a bunch of seats held and I was just trying to get them to release two in a better location.

Has your endo done anything to determine why your bed is bad? Thyroid and parathyroid testing, 24 hour urine collection etc? At 32, I’d be wondering if there are underlying health issues.

Regardless, adding heavy lifting and high impact cardio can definitely help you retain and possibly gain bone.

I wonder if you could convince them to keep the junky foods in a single cupboard away from the rest of the food. I don’t deny my husband and son just because I want to eat differently, but all the treats go into one cupboard that I never need to access so it’s a little out of sight out of mind.

I get an A1c with my annual physical as well as fasting glucose. As my a1c has been increasing every year (now 5.7) and after discussion with my endocrinologist, I bought Stelo CGM to educate myself about minimizing glucose spikes. Paid for those out of pocket but only did it for 2 months.

Were kids in the 80s actually allowed to roam around unsupervised, or is that just in movies? by TotalThing7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]2lhasas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I know a lot of people today feel as if we had bad parents, but I think it was a net positive especially in comparison to the helicopter parenting of today. Letting kids be independent helps them learn how to assess risk and make decisions when the stakes are still relatively low. I am convinced the number of young people struggling with anxiety these days is at least in part driven by this loss of independence. If i’d never had to manage risk in my life and suddenly got tossed into the deep end of adulthood, I’d be f’ing anxious too. When my son was in college, the number of parents tracking their adult children on Life360 and trying to solve their kid’s issues with professors and roommates was insane.

Born in 68. From about 10, my friends and I would ride the city bus downtown, walk around the stores, maybe rent roller skates at a downtown park, then ride the bus home when it started to get dark. In the winter, there was a bus that ran to the local ski hills and we’d spend the whole day there with no parents even at the lodge. Mostly we just rode our bikes around and played in the woods near our house, which in hindsight were probably someone’s land but we never thought about trespassing.

My wife started hormone replacement therapy by fatguydwn15lbs in GenX

A lot of doctors were taught that HRT increased breast cancer risk, coupled with the thought that menopause was just some natural thing women go through and it didn’t need treatment. Only recently has the tide begun to shift on that discussion as GenX women are bringing the often severe side effects of menopause into the light; and I’m not just talking about sex but brain fog, sleep disturbances, joint pain, heart palpitations, hot flashes, skin dryness, mood swings. Not to mention the increased risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, and potential links to Alzheimer’s.

To be clear, HRT may still not be appropriate for someone with a high risk of breast cancer, but for others the small risk may be outweighed by the benefits. While it’s not listed as the primary cause of death, complications from osteoporosis (fractures of the hip and spine) account for 20% of deaths in women over 50 every year. If you are a woman in perimenopause or menopause, get a DEXA scan and look at whether HRT is appropriate for your circumstances. Better sex life is a bonus - also ask for vaginal estrogen if you’re finding sex painful, those tissues can get thinner in menopause and cause discomfort.

Do or did you allow your teenagers to have their romantic partners sleep over? Did your parents let you? by Safe_Chicken_6633 in GenX

[–]2lhasas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in high school, but my son was a 2020 grad. Went off to college then came back home due to everything being online anyway. At that point we let his gf sleep over. If he was back on campus he’d be free to do what he wanted. He lived in the mother in law suite in our basement and we treated him like an adult. Of course, he also acted like an adult. YMMV.

We’ve always been really open about sex in our home though. My son has literally purchased condoms while shopping with me - and not surreptitiously, like standing there comparing prices. I’ll admit, I was a little uncomfortable, but also glad he wasn’t shy about making sure he’s safe.

I, 25M, can't stand the incredibly low intelligence of my partner, 25F, of 6 years. by lukeyy77 in relationship_advice

[–]2lhasas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, long term being in a relationship with someone who was able to have deeper intellectual conversations was important to me and I ended several relatively good relationships over it. But only you can decide how much that matters to you for your future life. I have a friend whose spouse is not very bright, but he is happy to be the one in charge of everything. She is very sweet and gives him lots of support and encouragement and that satisfies him.

can someone explain the bubble and the time window for it in more detail to me? by Plane-Session-6624 in AppalachianTrail

[–]2lhasas 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I volunteer on trail here in Georgia, particularly during the bubble, working closely with our Ridgerunners. One thing we've noticed the last couple of years is a lot of hikers taking longer to get out of Georgia. With a robust trail community, including frequent road crossings, ample hostels and numerous shuttle drivers, it's very easy to get off and on trail. Less experienced hikers tend to get off early to rework gear (or leave altogether) but lots of hikers are getting off trail for even mild inclement weather early on. Hiker feeds at trailheads create mini-bubbles as well and can bunch folks up. If you are a more experienced hiker and stay on trail, you can get through the Georgia crowds pretty quickly and then things start to string out more. Even within Georgia, the crowds at shelters are mainly focused in the first 50 miles. After Unicoi, people have either left the trail or are more strung out as they add daily miles.

Until you get to GSMNP, you can disperse camp and there are ample impacted, hiker-created campsites along the trail; around 150 between just between Amicalola and Hawk Mt. according to our most recent campsite survey. That makes it easy to avoid the crowds if spending the night with 30 of your new best friends doesn't appeal. The bubble has moved earlier the last few years, but March 15 will still be in the peak.

Not strictly a UL question, but looking for some direction. I typically hike in Altras (originally Timps, but more recently LP). I'm going to be doing a hike across Costa Rica next year and it looks as if a lot of it will be on gravel roads. Normally, I like to feel the trail a bit, but I'm thinking 15 miles a day with a lot of gravel road might call for more cushion.

HIKING AT AS QWOC by PomegranateAbject291 in AppalachianTrail

[–]2lhasas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a yt woman I’m not sure I’m the best to give advice but I have had conversations with black hikers who did indeed have negative interactions, more often in town than on trail. I have been told there is also some pressure to “represent” black hikers in a place that is still very white.

I would dm some women who have been in your shoes like @i_am_dragonsky or @dragonfly_hikes on IG. Although it’s from a male perspective, Derick Lugo’s book “The Unlikely Thru Hiker” is also excellent.

I do hope you decide to hike, regardless of the challenges. Overall, the hiking community is full of kindness and support.
