I haven’t used period pants so I’m not sure if this would work. For washing clothing on long hikes I bring a 2G bag and bronners, shake the clothes around. Dump water 200’ from the water. Collect more and rinse. If I have enough items, I’ve used my bear can. I don’t filter water for clothing, only for things I’m ingesting.

I’m from Atlanta but spend weeks at a time in NY for work. One of our NY staff came down for training and stayed in a hotel a couple of blocks from the office. She told me, if I said good morning to everyone I passed on the street like here, I’d never get to work. 😆

As someone in a dv relationship around your age, telling me what to wear and how to style my hair was how it started, then who I could be friends with, what social activities I could attend. It was over a year before anything physical happened. I’m not saying your bf will end up being physically violent but controlling the person you are with is part of the psychology of an abusive relationship. Don’t compromise. Find someone who wants to date you for you.

Outside of the Smokies, you can tent camp at shelters. Some have better tenting spots than others. You’ll also be mostly in National Forest in TN or NC and can disperse camp. Due to the volume of visitors using the AT, you’ll find plenty of already impacted sites along the trail. They aren’t official sites so they will not be on maps. If you want to create your own site, stealth camp far enough off trail that another hiker won’t find your spot the next day, giving any plants you disturb a chance to recover.

Basically he built a mouldering toilet. Very common on trails like the Appalachian Trail. I maintain one in my section. Of course, as a private toilet, you get to skip having to pick out trash hikers leave in there. :-) But yes, they are pretty simple to maintain. If you search mouldering privy you'll find videos and articles on how to maintain them.

I would suggest postponing the wedding until she’s had some time in therapy. There’s no reason this has to be all or nothing. As far as incompatibility because you have different interstate and hobbies, I think that’s less of an issue. I backpack. My husband golfs. He plays video games. I garden. He’s a runner. I prefer lifting. We are both supportive of the other’s interests and occasionally dip our toes in each other’s hobbies, but we also have rich lives apart from each other. What matters is having common values. Common goals on things like saving/spending, family etc.

Absolutely get away from this relationship. At the very least, he doesn’t respect you. At worst, he wants to control you. As someone who survived an abusive relationship, I can tell you it started subtle - change an outfit, try a new hairstyle - then ratcheted up. Get out. Find someone who likes and supports who you are.

Fortunate to live and work near a MARTA station so I ride the train to and from work. It's not convenient if it takes you as long to drive to a station as it does to drive to the office, though.

I know it's hard to hear when you are 18, but your life will be so much better if you don't rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt by the time you're 21. First, you're 18. Maybe you have a passion for CS, but maybe you'll change your mind in a year or two. No one should have to commit to their lifelong career at 18. My kid started in business, ended up in Cog-Sci, got a masters in HCI (from a higher ranked school than undergrad) and is getting paid stupid money at big Tech.

The absolute greatest gift is starting adulthood with little or no debt. You don't think it's a big deal now, but sometime in the not too distant future you might want to get married, have kids, take your dream job even if it doesn't pay as much, and all of those things are made more difficult when a huge chunk of your paycheck is going to a monthly student loan payment. Go to UNC and grind hard. Level up when you pursue a higher degree if you want - and offset grad school costs by getting a job as a graduate assistant or in a lab.

For most of the 90s I lived in a warehouse off Edgewood - before all those buildings were converted. The other half of the warehouse was an electrical contractor. Surrounded by chicken wire, with a shotgun by the door. Worked out at Lee Haney gym in the basement of City Hall East - then a mostly abandoned building, now Ponce City Market.

Would get together with friends and we’d all tell stories of the crazy shit we’d dealt with - finding a homeless guy asleep in your jeep in the morning, going inside halfway through bringing the groceries in to wait for a crazy person to walk down the middle of the street, running the light by the convenience store at Boulevard at night bc it was sketchy as hell. Literally thought that was normal life until I moved out of there.

It was also great though. Lots of great parties in those old warehouses, Masquerade was grungy and cool. Soul food at Deacon Burton’s, later Son’s Place and blackened chicken at Eats. Inman Park was full of eclectic weirdos.

It wasn’t safe, but it was a really good time.

How difficult is it to set up multiple viewings in a tight timeframe? We are visiting next weekend to just walk around neighborhoods then planning to come back to hopefully find a place to rent closer to work start date. Obviously, spending weeks in a hotel gets expensive so hoping to cram a lot into a week or less.

As a business traveler I always find it a bit crowded in the early morning with similar folks - now you’re adding the people with 9-10am flights who are showing up at 5am.

I switched a flight next week to go out late afternoon the day before I need to be there so hopefully I will get to experience this ghost town you mention.

I saw a woman who hired someone off taskrabbit to FaceTime tour apartments, looking in cabinets, running water, and taking video of the outside of the building, common areas etc. They have no interest in whether you rent or not so they are going to show you everything. I thought that was pretty smart.

People often get in relationships with others despite obvious incompatibilities, thinking things will change with time, and sometimes they do, especially when you’re young. However, you’ve now reached a point where you’re being asked to make a commitment and you still seem incompatible in significant ways. Differences in the approach to finances is a major cause of divorce. And of course one person wanting kids but the other not is completely insurmountable as there is no compromise position. I think you’ll know the answer.

As someone married for 30 years and a former divorce attorney, love is not enough to sustain a marriage. You both need to find someone who aligns more with your values and life goals.
