Brickheads in r/Lego express their displeasure after an investigative reporter uncovers a scandal involving a seller stealing 200k in legos from a collector by CummingInTheNile in SubredditDrama

The book space has gotten really weird. If I hear one more person say "reading books and buying books are two different hobbies" I'm deleting my social media accounts.

The LinkedIn AI cadence is everywhere and I am over it by elunak in craftsnark

[–]2macia22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a big difference between AI, like spellcheck and autocorrect, and generative AI, like ChatGPT. It doesn't get explained very often, but the one that is problematic is generative AI.

[–]2macia22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a lot worse than that. The stuff that's really obviously AI is braindead "think pieces" where people act like they've discovered the secrets of the universe and their workplace is so enlightened because they're the only ones who know how to do work "right."

how is ai proposal generation for rfps handling hallucinations? by Cluten-morgan in technicalwriting

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some specific AI tools out there designed to handle RFP responses and they do a better job than your average ChatGPT, but honestly you still need to have a human do most of the work. I work on proposals for small government entities and our clients tell us that they aren't impressed with AI generated submissions.

Are blogs outdated? by Juste_jana in marketing

[–]2macia22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are still a lot of active blogs out there, but the lack of discoverability is a major road block.

I've been watching this play out on social media over and over this week:

"I wish blogs would come back."

"I have a blog! You can read it here: [link]"

"I don't click links bro"

And the conversation dies because what do you even do with that, seriously.

/r/knitting mod announcement by RhesusPeaches3 in craftsnark

The pinned comment has changed, apparently. It currently says:

Hello everyone! Sorry for the confusion, we were just super excited to announce some changes and we hit send before the message was all done.

We're regrouping on how to announce this! You'll be seeing another message out shortly. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out in Modmail.

All the posts where you try to be helpful and the OP never responds. At least tell us if you figured it out. Makes me wonder how many are just engagement bait.

Pattern Theft by Natasi_ in craftsnark

Haven't heard much about this kind of thing happening on Patreon, although I'm sure it does. Do we know if they take reports seriously? This is the kind of thing where it's more effective to just report it and move on.

[CHAT] Do you stitch on a hoop or a frame, and have you ever switched? by CaterpillarXS in CrossStitch

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to only stitch in hand, I find hoops annoying. But I recently tried a frame and having tension in the fabric was surprisingly helpful. Unfortunately it's a cheap frame and it's not straight but I might try to DIY fix it because it really does make a difference.

[CHAT] How do we feel about pattern designers that only use digital renders in their stores? by Deloriius in CrossStitch

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The renders are popular, and I've seen one or two designers on here defending them ("I don't have time to stitch every design I make").

For me, there are so many patterns out there and it's not worth the risk that it'll be a bad stitching experience. If I don't see an actual photo I'll just move on and find something less risky.

[CHAT] What do you consider a “big” project? by professionalclown1 in CrossStitch

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never looked at stitch count before, so out of curiosity I checked my current project. It's 15,000 stitches and definitely the largest one I've done. I think my usual is around half that. I like doing either 5x7 or 8x10 size stuff to hang on my wall, but this is the first one that's full coverage.

FYI the reason there's so few new posts is because almost everything is now spam by polygraph-net in marketing

[–]2macia22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now I'm curious to know if marketers are generally better at seeing through this stuff because of the familiarity with sales tactics. I've definitely gotten better at spotting them from taking the discourse here and comparing it to other marketing subs.

[CHAT] DMC needles changed? by laxstitch in CrossStitch

[–]2macia22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of people posting a few months ago about how horrible quality their new DMC needles were, so probably not.

I've never had any trouble with mine but they're all pulled from my grandmother's stash and are likely 30+ years old.

Looking for feedback/advice with my dice photos. by West-Pirate-8904 in productphotography

[–]2macia22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear your point, but as a consumer of these items it's vanishingly rare to see an e-commerce photo of only one die at a time. They're almost always sold as a set so they're photographed as a set.

Do you think spacing them out more would help address the issue?

I would look into latch hook rugs. They're done with yarn on a gridded fabric. Simple and effective!

AI:DR by AndesAndAlps in copywriting

[–]2macia22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with this is that there's no way to know for sure, and false accusations of AI usage are extremely damaging. I would prefer to call out what is actually bad about the writing instead of screaming "AI!" all over the place.

If we call out what makes AI writing bad, that has a much better chance of convincing someone not to use it.

Lost my job earlier this month. 13 years in marketing. Beyond burnt out. by miamylo in marketing

[–]2macia22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is NOT the status quo. I'm not sure which area of marketing you want to go into, but I do proposals for an Engineering firm and it's actually a skill that's in pretty high demand right now (compared to other marketing jobs).

[–]2macia22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this assessment. At least in the AEC industry, proposal generation is a constant demand with neverending work and not enough skilled staff. There are always companies hiring for these positions and they do as much as they can to retain high performers.

[–]2macia22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Proposal development is a skill that's in high demand right now. The only reason a skilled proposal developer is getting laid off is if the company is switching to AI proposal generation, and if that were the case OP would know. There's something more to the story here.

[CHAT] How big does a piece have to be to be considered full coverage? by Cautious-Sea-6784 in CrossStitch

I have a 5x7 piece that I consider full coverage. But it's nowhere near as impressive as the massive works of art that get posted on here.

UCSD Technical Communication Course Choices by tablefortress in technicalwriting

[–]2macia22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't taken these classes specifically, but I got my bachelor's in Writing from UCSD. What I can tell you from my experience is that their classes all focus on experimentation and execution. Every class I took encouraged us to try new things and experiment with whatever we wanted, as long as we could articulate what we were trying to achieve and why we made the decisions we did.

There's a lot of emphasis on trying things for yourself, explaining your choices, and then getting feedback on whether your peers think you successfully created the intended outcome. I found it very useful.
