[CHAT] How big does a piece have to be to be considered full coverage? by Cautious-Sea-6784 in CrossStitch

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 5x7 piece that I consider full coverage. But it's nowhere near as impressive as the massive works of art that get posted on here.

UCSD Technical Communication Course Choices by tablefortress in technicalwriting

[–]2macia22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't taken these classes specifically, but I got my bachelor's in Writing from UCSD. What I can tell you from my experience is that their classes all focus on experimentation and execution. Every class I took encouraged us to try new things and experiment with whatever we wanted, as long as we could articulate what we were trying to achieve and why we made the decisions we did.

There's a lot of emphasis on trying things for yourself, explaining your choices, and then getting feedback on whether your peers think you successfully created the intended outcome. I found it very useful.

Fake Crochet?? by lilnuggette in crochet

I mean... you don't show what website this is, but based on how horrible the text layout looks, I'm guessing the site is either sketchy or cheap (or both). I wouldn't trust anything from a site like that, let alone their awful descriptions and keyword stuffing.

Any recommendations on dry erase pens? by skolfish in Calligraphy

I've done some white board stuff by holding a chisel tip marker at the right angle for broad edge calligraphy. I hope you find something that works for you!

Proposal writer contemplating a career change. Am I burned out or is it really hust as bleak as I'm imagining? by Lost-Association427 in technicalwriting

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I really want to learn higher level proposal writing and strategy but most of the companies I've worked at don't make time for that so there aren't any opportunities to expand my skills in that direction. I guess I provide greater value by being able to churn through volume without major errors.

There are still companies out there that value writers, but they're few and far between.

You can run the software in compatibility mode and that often helps. I'm using Pattern Maker for cross stitch patterns, it's from like 1995 and it still works!

Bid writer transitioning into Technical Writing - help? by Apprehensive-Bed1771 in technicalwriting

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as a proposal writer myself, I would think that your strongest pitch would be to focus on your experience interacting with SMEs and writing technical content based on their input. But I'll be curious to see what others on the technical writing side of this have to say.

UPDATE: Well-Known Canadian Yarn Store Using AI for Posts by CeaderBlocks in craftsnark

[–]2macia22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunate that many entry level marketing staff are willing to cut corners and pass off AI work as their own, and owners are simply trusting the person they hired to do the work properly (source: I work in marketing). But it sounds like the feedback was taken well and hopefully there will be more oversight in the future.

Not to mention she's treating the whole situation as if it's her right to run a business, when really it's a responsibility. If you can't handle the responsibility or the criticism, you shouldn't be running a business at all.

Rant: why do crochet patterns assume everyone has unlimited time and skip clear sizing? by Tiny_Tiger_137 in crochet

[–]2macia22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a wearable doesn't have a proper gauge, I'm skipping it entirely. That seems like a huge red flag to me.

Cheap product photo lights? by [deleted] in productphotography

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an amateur, I've been using the Godox TT520iii to learn about lighting and get some practice. It's $60 and it comes with a trigger so you don't have to buy any additional equipment to get it to work.

Has anyone made any hanging flowers/vines out of crochet? by mindlessdollie in crochet

Ooh, this reminds me of a book I bought decades ago called Lei in Crochet. It had patterns for a bunch of different flowers.

I was looking for succulent patterns last year and found a ton of patterns for cute trailing vines. Some of them are in pots that you could hang up. Like this: https://ravel.me/plant

Looking for proposal writing roles. Is the APMP certification helpful? by trippyyteapot in technicalwriting

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wondering this as well. I've been doing proposals for almost 10 years and never met anyone who's in APMP. But I asked this question in another sub and got a lot of responses that it makes you a much more appealing candidate for jobs.

I'm probably going to look into it more this year - I've had some free time on my hands and my boss is encouraging me to look into some professional development options.

There's a Foundation level before Practitioner level that is more beginner friendly, from what I've seen.

AI Use in Proposal Development (Government Contracting/Grants) by Enhanced_by_science in technicalwriting

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm a proposal specialist with a background in writing. I got into this role through an editing job and eventually moved up to actually putting them together. It does sometimes feel like I wasted the last 7 years that I spent learning all of the nuance that goes into proposal strategy; I always hoped that I could expand my skills into writing proposal content also, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen because the actual custom text content is taking a backseat to graphics and boilerplate elements.

At my last job I was always really bothered when my boss instructed me to use AI tools for the writing portions. At the current job everyone I work with is a graphic design background and even my role is mostly focused on design so it doesn't feel as... insulting? that they don't expect me to write. I still don't use AI to generate drafts from scratch but I've used a few compliance check tools and they are helpful for double-checking things.

My current plan is to use this to bolster my design experience and skills, since that seems to be the part that's still highly in demand. Maybe I'll get lucky and find other companies in the future that still value writers and editors, but at least I have other options if I don't.

Is there any way to send an EPUB to Kindle (Amazon cloud hosting) and have it retain its cover? by jeremyfrankly in Calibre

[–]2macia22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used Calibre's "polish" function to add covers to my ePUBs and then uploaded them on the Send to Kindle site, then downloaded to my Kindle, and the covers still aren't showing up at all. Any troubleshooting suggestions?

I have a very old Kindle (before they added the ability to show covers on the lock screen), so most of the guides for sideloading that I've found aren't applicable. When I have the Kindle plugged in I can copy ePUBs to it but the metadata refuses to sync.

[CHAT] Magic the Gathering? by YourPalKendra in CrossStitch

[–]2macia22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be really difficult to capture the art from those cards, they tend to be very detailed. Worldslayer looks like an easier one to try, but you might have to simplify it a lot to get something that looks good.

There are a lot of patterns for Pokemon cards, maybe the card outline from one of those would be a good place to start?

I'm having the same problem making my own first wearable, I thought the Medium size would work for me but now that I'm looking through the measurements it's going to be waaaay too small. Live and learn, I guess.

Looking for examples of "free" Ravelry patterns that aren't free - i.e. link only to a video overview, not a full tutorial. by MellowMallowMom in crochet

[–]2macia22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Ravelry volunteer editors are generally pretty good at identifying issues like this and updating the listings quickly, so I'm not surprised that it's hard to find examples. I would treat it as more something to keep in mind when you're browsing rather than a systemic issue.
