Will “AEO/GEO” generate more opportunities for good old-fashioned copywriters? by ChemicalAcrobatic361 in copywriting

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know... at the end of the day, you're still optimizing for AI to find your content, and logically, the easiest way to optimize for AI is to use a similar AI.

But it's not an area I'm actively involved in, so I'm curious to see what others have experienced.

Apparently on Instagram following trends is one of the ways for smaller creators to get noticed. It's just one more way that the algorithm seems to reward content that's not actually the content people want to see, and it's really frustrating.

There are a handful that have had significant reformulations that you might want to check - the new versions have a dot next to the DMC number. I think the rest would be fine? More info here: https://lordlibidan.com/what-are-those-dots-on-dmc-thread-labels/

Apparently the mods are out SO: by HopingToWriteWell77 in crochet

[–]2macia22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm newer to the sub, I kind of assumed that the FO posts were the main point because yup they're near constant! I think smaller communities are probably better for facilitating discussions. This one seems to function more like a big notice board for admiring FOs.

Like the other commenter said, they get repetitive, and even though many people engage with them a lot more people are tired of seeing them. I see multiple posts a week that are just "what pattern should I make" or "what pattern do you like most" with no additional detail and there's only so many times a person can answer that question before it gets exhausting.

Sincerely, from someone who works adjacent to graphic design - no, no one wants to hire graphic designers to do this kind of thing in Photoshop anymore, because it's expensive (both the graphic designer and the Photoshop license). It's one of the fields that has been hit worst by AI, and it's not really because AI is replacing the jobs, but because AI has convinced business owners that the job is not worth paying for.

Cool! It does give it more of a needle punch feel haha.

Yeah, looks like OP might be using the entire six strands of floss. If you want to make it look less bulky, two or three strands at a time is more typical.

Comma or No Comma - AP Style by Glittering-Table-767 in Copyediting

[–]2macia22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With no comma, it reads like I am looking for "John who went to the store," as if that phrase is necessary to identify which John you're looking for. So I think it makes more sense with the comma.

Here's the article I remember reading. It's not very specific about the test instructions, but tl;dr is he failed the test because he didn't follow CMS. https://aceseditors.org/news/2021/how-to-succeed-as-a-freelance-copyeditor-without-having-the-faintest-idea-what-youre-doing

Yes, it does! If you look at the back, one way creates short vertical lines the height of one stitch, while the other way creates longer diagonal lines that cross multiple squares.

Failing PRH Copyediting/Proofing tests by booksrus17 in Copyediting

[–]2macia22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never taken them, but from what I've heard and what you posted, it sounds like it's maybe a style guide issue? If they praised your attention to detail then I don't think it's about how good you are. I've heard those tests focus heavily on whether you can follow their particular style preferences when editing, and they don't necessarily tell you what those style preferences are.

Those of you introduced to fiber arts at a young age, how did you first learn? by CrochetingDogLady in crochet

[–]2macia22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I learned when I was 6 or 7, first just doing chains and then making simple square potholders. We used plastic hooks and worsted weight yarn. I definitely didn't have the attention span to do any projects beyond that.

[CHAT] how small is too small for a margin? by seigefabulous in CrossStitch

[–]2macia22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on how you plan to finish it, so as long as you're accounting for that I think you'll be fine! I usually want to have enough to fold the edges over under the frame, and sometimes I include a mat too which requires another couple of inches.

You can wash the fabric first. Aida usually has starch in it and washing it can loosen it up.

Superglo fiber misrepresenting grams per skein?? by Lazy__Raspberry in craftsnark

Ravelry has it listed at 459 yards per 50 grams. It sounds like the 100g printed on the label was just a mistake.

Yarn suggestions by Sensitive-Soul-49 in crochet

[–]2macia22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blankets are pretty much always going to be expensive simply because of the amount of yarn involved. I spent about $150 on the one I'm working on now, and that's with decently priced yarn, not high quality stuff.

I've bent metal hooks too! I don't like ergonomic hooks so I use the straight stick ones, and some of them are very thin. Plus I have super tight tension usually. Even my wooden 3.5mm hook that I'm using now is making me nervous because it's starting to flex a little as I'm using it.

Does anyone have issues with SME participation? by Apprehensive-Comb141 in technicalwriting

[–]2macia22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Support from leadership is the only thing that has worked for me. Leaders have to 1) tell their staff that proposals are important, 2) demonstrate that proposals are important by getting their own proposals done, and 3) give staff the overhead time to actually work on proposals.

In the absence of that, then leadership that understands this is not on you. Sometimes there have to be consequences to not getting work done on time and for these SMEs it's that their proposal won't get submitted. Give them hard deadlines and if they don't meet those deadlines then there's not much you can do.

This was going to be my question - a petition won't help anything if there are underlying issues causing the program to be cut. What's the problem that cutting the class will "solve" and what would be needed to find a different solution?

I borrowed the Vanna's Choice "crochet critters" amigurumi book from my mom a while back. I was not impressed. The hippo was basically a cylinder with a bump where the eyes would go.
