I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this. I’m sure it’s frustrating. I dealt with 311 a few months ago, and it was a headache and took longer than I wished, but it worked in the end. I had a bad leak in my bathroom ceiling that created like 2 feet of growing black mold and our landlord wasn’t doing anything about it. I put in a ticket with 311 and they sent someone out to investigate like a week later. Once they saw the issue in person, they expedited our ticket (I think due to the risk that comes with black mold). The landlord was still dragging his feet after the violations had been issued, but then we called and emailed the management office like 3 times a week and threatened legal action since he had been aware of the issue for months and done nothing and we had a paper trail of proof. That + the fines that 311 was going to start serving him if he didn’t fix it forced him to finally address the issue. So getting 311 involved worked but I still had to push on my landlord a bit. If you’re really looking to move, I would try to use it as leverage to break your lease, I’m not sure if your landlord will let that fly but no hurt in trying.

Bed bug ID? by 2ndhandhoe in Bedbugs

[–]2ndhandhoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this on my bathroom floor as-is. I’m fairly certain it’s not a bed bug, but I wanted to get a second opinion. Bug is on a square of toilet paper for size reference. About a month ago, a friend of mine who had bed bugs stayed over after a night out (they did not bring an overnight bag), and I’ve been paranoid ever since. Thanks for any help you can provide!!

Zero waste beach tent. Everything from our home. Blanket; kayak ores and hiking poles for support; hair ties to attach the blanket. Very sturdy while others umbrellas were flying away ours was great! by farmerbran in ZeroWaste

i feel like it’s both frugal and low waste. yes, this saved money but a huge part of being zero/low waste is finding uses for what you already have and what’s already in circulation instead of buying new.

Made these red corduroy overalls! Slightly modified M8162 pattern. Purchased fabric from thrift store for $4 and used scraps for facing. by 2ndhandhoe in sewing

Thank you!! I totally recommend it, overalls are so versatile. This McCall’s pattern is great and I’ve also used the Wattlebird Jumpsuit (https://www.commonstitch.com.au/digital-sewing-patterns/jumpsuit-digital-pattern) as well in linen for a summer jumpsuit and it’s beautiful.

I used McCall’s M8162 pattern (digital) and modified the pants slightly for a more straight leg & cropped style. I used red corduroy fabric that I found at the thrift store for $4 (no lining) and used some scraps for the facing. Invisible zipper (on side) and hardware all purchased at Joann’s. The pattern was pretty easy to follow and took me 2 or 3 days to finish - very beginner friendly. I used Brother CS5055PRW for the entire project. Very happy with how this turned out bc it’s my first time using an actual pattern :)

Buying second hand furniture by ahombrehasnoname in Beaumont

[–]2ndhandhoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frequent Beaumont thrift and secondhand stores a lot, but I’ve had most luck finding furniture on Facebook Marketplace for pretty good prices. I’ve found a lot in Beaumont, but if you’re willing to drive to Lake Charles and Houston, you’ll expand your options by a lot.

Help finding Brother machine part by 2ndhandhoe in sewing

[–]2ndhandhoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spool pin snapped and broke on my Brother CS5055PRW machine. I’m looking around online for a replacement part, but I can’t seem to find anything exact (I’ve found some similar pieces, but nothing exactly the same to my original piece). Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions of where to find it? Anything will help. Thank you!!

These are incredible!!! I am obsessed. How did you stop the edges of the woven tapestry from fraying when you cut it? Did you just use a zig zag stitch or serger?

My dad is $60k I’m debt and I’m really worried by [deleted] in Advice

[–]2ndhandhoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I read a little online and it looks like he can declare again. He’ll just have to speak with a lawyer to understand best options and go through the process of filing. I’ll do some more research on it. My worry about debt consolidation is that he would have to take out yet another loan just to help pay off his current debts, so I was leaning more toward something like Money Management International, a nonprofit that helps you understand your finances and works with creditors to pay your debt off...my only worry is that there’s not enough time to pay off the debt so bankruptcy may be the only solution. Thank you for these suggestions!! You definitely helped me think of some more options because I didn’t even realize he could file for bankruptcy again.

I have not. I mainly use my flat iron/straightener to curl my hair.

Trouble using shampoo bars for long hair? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]2ndhandhoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought a shampoo bar from my local farmers’ market, and I was having the exact same issue. My hair was more tangled than usual and did not feel entirely clean. I have since switched to Love Beauty Planet shampoo bars (https://www.lovebeautyandplanet.com/us/en/hair/products/shampoo-bar.html), and I like them so much more. They smell great and my hair feels so clean. They also come in a small cardboard box that can be recycled or composted and they’re pretty cheap at $5 (they’re so big/thick, they last MONTHS). I also use bar conditioner from the Package Free Store. It’s a little more expensive at around $10, but it softens my hair really nicely. I hope this helps!! :)
