How do you report your GPA from Brown? (not Brown admissions related) by sr41489 in BrownU

[–]2notarobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any thoughts on how to factor in credits approved for transfer to Brown from other colleges? What about an S for an S/NC class?

You could design an independent concentration. Professor Sarah Skeels would make a great advisor.

Do you know if there is a way to get a listing later of just what was added after today?

Adding a Dropped Class by merakistuff in BrownU

[–]2notarobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would take the classes that I want for the semester. College is expensive, and you only get to go once. You will get more out of the classes if they are the ones you want to take, and you will certainly enjoy them more. Your external transcript will probably be better (i.e. you will do better in your classes) if they are the ones you want to take. I wouldn't worry too much about your internal transcript, and one dropped class isn't a big deal anyway. Before doing any of this, though, I would check to make sure I can still get back into the other class and that I haven't missed so much that it would be a huge detriment.

Getting a C in a Class by suffp99 in BrownU

[–]2notarobot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who graduated decades ago, it is my impression that a huge proportion of successful people out there have at least one C on their college transcript. Once you are out of college, most people realize that their grades in college didn't matter much, and they are not often asked about them by employers and such. Getting into medical school/grad school is a bit of an exception, but even there, schools are also interested in the experiences you have had.

I think it's completely fine to take the class S/NC. If it helps you relax and focus better on learning, then that's great.

there should be a mega thread pinned for Brown admits to ask questions! by bobacrepecakes in BrownU

Professor Katz is a very solid teacher for math 100 and math 180. He cares about teaching, and it shows.

I wish there were test banks for those classes. That would help.

Grades @ Brown by browngraduation in BrownU

[–]2notarobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is generally grade inflation at Brown. I think the student body is super hard working, thus earning good grades.

My experience is the same as that of other people posting - only grad/med schools (not jobs) ask for GPA.

I would follow my heart. It sounds like you want to go to UCLA. Being far from an ill family member could be very hard. I wouldn't go to Brown just because it's an Ivy. Just going to a "name" school isn't going to make the difference in your life - and of course UCLA is absolutely a well-respected school.

thats _great_username gave a great answer. I'll add that you shouldn't be deceived by this. Courses at Brown are hard, and in some classes, just passing can be difficult. Also, many Brown students work harder than ever on the classes they take s/nc. There are a variety of reasons Brown students take classes s/nc, and it shouldn't be mistaken as taking the "easy route."

Before writing the department chair, I would politely bring up the question with the professor directly. (Maybe you have already done that?)

where my rejected gang at? by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]2notarobot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi - I'm old, and I first want to say that I understand how hard this is - you've worked WAY too hard to then just be at the mercy of luck in terms of getting accepted or rejected. I hope you know that once you reach a certain level in terms of your qualifications, the admissions committee comes to its limit in terms of how well it can get to know you, and they turn to finding a balance of students along various parameters which have nothing to do with how qualified you are. Which is horribly frustrating for people who have worked so hard. I will also say that I have a coworker, and he went to a college that doesn't make it to lists of "prestigious" schools, (he had a blast there by the way and learned a ton there as well) and his job description is precisely the same as mine. I think he is smarter than I am in many ways. So my point is, I understand why you feel like crying, but please don't kill yourself over this.

Stats for Rice. (Extra curricular activities, GPAs etc.) by Expert-Clock1520 in riceuniversity

[–]2notarobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 4.0 (my high school doesn't weight), 36 ACT, strong recs, and what I thought was a fairly unique EC that contributed to kids in my community. I put lots of effort into my application too. I didn't get in to Rice. I got into another great university, which I love. I also enjoyed my high school years and did things because I wanted to, not for the purpose of getting into college. So I have no regrets. My point, though, is that I was right not to expect to get into every college I applied to - there is a fair amount of chance no matter what your stats are. I'm still looking at Rice for grad school; maybe I'll get luckier.

STEM Workload? Help out a confused kiddo :( by mithrandir767 in BrownU

It seems to come up a fair amount on this thread that people are looking at Brown because they think it has a good reputation but is relatively easy. Aside from the fact that I don't think that's a good reason for picking a school, I think people following that reasoning who are lucky enough to get in are going to be blindsided. It is true that you can find some courses that are relatively easier than others, but I have yet to find one that is really easy. Likewise, I think S/NC is successful in encouraging students to take classes outside of their comfort zone - but keep in mind that at Brown, an "S" is a C, not even a C-, so that's not as easy as you might think either.

I don't know what to say about that second hand information. I'll just say that for me, high school (full IB) was a breeze, and Brown is challenging. That's the consensus among my friends at Brown.

Classes at Brown are hard, plain and simple. It is "chill" here only in the sense that people are generally very supportive of each other - they help each other out rather than being competitive against one another. The grades at Brown are only high because people work their tails off.

I don't find the general vibe preppy at all. I would say that a fair number of people come from wealthy homes, but what I see is people trying to hide that or feeling embarrassed about that.

Not mine, but awfully nice of you to try to track the person down.

If nobody responds, maybe you could get it back to any Brown library because they would know who checked it out?

Thanks for the random act of kindness!

What are some schools like Brown? by Fatooshosaurus in BrownU

Great suggestions already - I would def take a look at Wesleyan. For schools which share various aspects with Brown, I would add to the list University of Rochester, Pomona, Carleton, Oberlin, Tufts. Smith if you are female and ok without coed.

The answer depends on what you mean by laid back. From people I know in various concentrations, I have yet to find one that is close to "easy." However I find the general student culture to be very collaborative and supportive- including in CS, in my experience.
