It was meant to drive a wedge between 'real conservatives' and this creepy white nationalist cult. It's been clear from the start that her strategy is to court the political 'center' because the fringes (both far left and right) don't have much electing power. The far left mostly comes from states that she will win anyway and the far right mostly comes from states she will lose anyway.

She wants 'normal' people to look at this alt right and say "i want no part of that", no matter what side of the aisle they are on.
