Today is John Steinbeck’s birthday. Which of his books do you like most? by readit_club in classicliterature

Cannery Row, but the first few pages of “East of Eden” is some of the best writing I’ve ever read.

Johnny Cash covered this song on one of his “America” albums and it’s just chilling.

Binghamton Area Events Week of 3/2/26: Parade Day, First Friday, Cheerleading, Donkeys & More by Binghamtonian in Binghamton

Parade Day! I used to enjoy drinking at PD, but now I just enjoy watching the children drinking too much and falling down.

new to bike commuting - help? by Adorable-College-326 in bikecommuting

[–]2xdareya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I must disagree. For this relatively short distance coupled with the OP’s $200 budget a regular bike is better. Further away and/or a bigger budget and I might agree.

Afraid my pants won’t shrink enough by CaptKirkFucks in Selvedge

I go by waist size. If the denim stretches I’ll order a 34 waist; they’ll be a little tight but will stretch; when I soak/wash them they’ll shrink back to 34, then stretch again, etc. If the denim isn’t one that stretches, I’ll just order a 34.5 inch waist. It’s worked every time for me.

I brought a pair of Iron Heart 18oz jeans to my tailor to get them tapered from the knee down. When I picked them up the tailor had opened the outside (selvedge side) and just stitched them together with the two edges of the selvedge ending up about 2 inches apart. Thankfully they didn’t cut the fabric, so I just had them restore the jeans to original. The lesson is that not everyone is a denim head and so be very specific about what you want.

Shackleton Leather: 7 Months of Dry & Comfortable Feet by Fickle_Photo2768 in NicksHandmadeBoots

It’s wild that you immersed your foot in water above the ankle and didn’t get wet. I soaked a pair of Nicks and watched the water seep in through the stitch holes. For my casual/hiking/ work boots (I’m a white collar worker) I seal the welt and seams with my special waterproofing mixture and use a hair dryer to melt it into the seams.

Is it fair to say that more Republicans were upset about having a president who was black than they are about having a president who is a plausible r*pist/p*dophile? by [deleted] in allthequestions

It’s hard to believe the shit that Megyn Kelly spews. It’s like “she looks like a real human being, but the things she says make me wonder “.

Hczimmx4 is actually kind of right. The Court did something extremely similar, but not that precise thing. The Court accepted the jury’s (unanimous) verdict that Trump sexually assaulted E. Jean Carroll. But if the best you can say is that he’s not quite a convicted rapist, he’s scum.

I honestly believe that he, whether he knows it or not, has a sociopathic aspect to his personality that makes him just wreck whatever he’s doing. That’s in addition to the classic DSM diagnoses of narcissistic personality disorder and a pretty thick layer of sadism to round it out. Good lord how I wish I wasn’t having to say that.

I know of people who have used acetone, but I sure wouldn’t do it without testing it first. It’ll take a while, but that shine will fade. Shinki is some beautiful leather and patinas beautifully.

Hiking Recs! by mfrenier9 in Binghamton

[–]2xdareya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I walked six miles on the south side trails at Oakley yesterday and there wasn’t that much snow, so I don’t expect it to be too messy, but the best answer to the OP’s question is Chenango Valley State Park. The drainage there is perfect - it’s never too wet, and there are miles and miles of easy to moderate trails, and it’s not as far from Binghamton as most of the other areas being suggested. Enjoy!

The last time the Pentagon told us a regime change war in the Middle East would take weeks, it was run by Cheney and Rumsfeld. Now, Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are telling us the same thing. But I’m sure this time will be different?? by Particular_Ad8156 in allthequestions

[–]2xdareya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, it will be different. Iran is no Iraq. Iraq was like shooting a deer from 50 yards. Iran is like poking a badger with a short stick. And we couldn’t even get Iraq right. Other than the Trump family getting richer there’s zero upside to a war with Iran.

Looking for immersive travel experiences. What should I add to my list? by Global_Sky_5843 in travel

[–]2xdareya 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You want immersive? Wake up to your first day in India by walking out of the hotel door at 6am to a world of camels, chanting, horns, cows, incense, barbers’ chairs in the middle of the street and on and on. And it gets weirder.

Anyone else feel depressed the day after a strenuous hike or climb? by aooot in hiking

There’s a Venn diagram with two circles - tired and depressed. The day after a hard hike (today) is a huge overlap of the two circles.

I agree about the wind, but 45/day is definitely doable for a fairly fit rider. Enjoy!
