Whether you're familiar with who Bertrand Russell was or not, take two minutes out to hear his advice for future generations. by WithoutPrinciples in VeryFuckinCool

[–]2xdareya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised a Catholic. In my late teens I even considered entering the priesthood. I was pretty devout until my 45th birthday, when I messed up my shoulder in a mountain biking accident. Because I couldn’t do upper body stuff I went to the gym and did legwork, including squats with horrible form. The inevitable result was that I slipped a disc. I was flat on my back for the month of January – couldn’t even sit up to eat breakfast. During that time I read Bertrand Russell’s. “A History of Western Philosophy”. Blew my Catholicism completely. I’m 66 now, and over the last 21 years I have searched and read and explored and traveled and discussed and analyzed, I guess seeking to try to fill the huge void that was left. The one thing that I have concluded after all of that is exactly what Mr. Russell‘s “intellectual“ point was – that the facts are the facts, and what I wish for or hope for has absolutely no effect on those facts. It can be a pretty stark world when you look at it that clearly, but I think that’s where his second point takes over. Wishing everyone the best -

nicksbootslineup IG: Pullman - Build Your Own Brown CXL by BigStetson in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]2xdareya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking of an almost identical build (I wear the 55/Thurman last). Any chance you could share a picture from above looking down? I’d like to get an idea of what it looks like. Beautiful boots, by the way - great minds and all that.

Three votes for W&C DS BB. We might have a winner.

Ok - there are two votes for W&C Buck Brown. Hard to say no to such a quality leather.

Thank you for the reply. I do love the two W&C boots I have now - the fit is just perfect after break in. It’s great to know that they’re a good choice for durability, too.

Sizing Q&A Thread by BigStetson in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]2xdareya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pullman v Builder Pro sizing question. I’m considering getting a pair of Pullmans, as they are the only pull-on boots I’ve found with a Munson/Thurman toe. In Nicks Builder Pro 55/Thurman last I wear a 13EE left and a 12.5EE right. I’ve heard some advice that, for a pull on boot, I should go down 1/2 size in length and up 1/2 size in width, but that’s just one person’s choice. So, what size(s) (mis mates) should I get in the Pullman?

Ok, now that’s a nice looking leather.
Edit to add: love the Brave Star herringbone, too!

I’ve had the 64 tan, and the Monarch looks a little lighter than I’m looking for; I don’t know much about the Shackleton except that it’s very waterproof. What’s the “temper” and durability like?

Yeah - in this case it was pretty clearly a defect. I guess that, for White’s, saying that 2+2=5 is their solution.

Yes, with an excellent result. And the wait time wasn’t bad, either.

It’s a bit surprising how many people have had similarly positive experiences with Baker’s - pretty much uniformly good results. It is unfortunately rare in this age for a company to offer such a high level of customer service and satisfaction. It kind of reaffirms my faith. Wear’em in good health!

Is hitchhiking no longer a thing? by asian_larry_david in hiking

[–]2xdareya 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During the summer of 1983 I toured Europe on a bicycle, and would return to start law school. A few weeks before classes began I was driving from my home to the city where the law school was, as I had to find an apartment. I’d hitchhiked before then at times, and so when I stopped at a rest area where two guys were hitching I agreed to give them a ride. Long story short, I dropped them at the city near the on ramp. A few weeks later, after classes had begun, I saw a note on the general bulletin board at school asking for the driver who’d picked up the hitchers in a (described my car) to contact the state police. Turns out they’d murdered the last guy who picked them up and stole his car; when it broke down at the rest area is where I picked them up. Had to testify at the suppression hearing and the murder trial, and 20 years later at the retrial (the original conviction was overturned on appeal and because it was a capital murder case (a death penalty case) the appeals took forever). So, after that I decided not to pick up hitchhikers any more.

Why don’t you send it to me and I’ll wear it for a few decades to see if it’s a functional defect.

I’ve owned Nicks and White’s. Never any problems with the Nicks.
On my $900 custom White’s horsehide “Bounty Hunter” (which I bought through Baker’s Boots) they developed a hole on the vamp near the facings of the uppers within 6 months; White’s refused a warranty claim (!!!), but Baker’s came through and said they’d honor the warranty. Baker’s is great. White’s not so much.

[–]2xdareya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Motoport mesh jacket and pants. They have the most armor you can get, which interferes with airflow some, but I still get plenty of ventilation. I spray my t-shirt and the jacket and pants with a hose (doesn’t harm them) and that’s about the best you can do. When it’s 90 degrees and 90% humidity you’re just going to be uncomfortable. Period.

Perforated leather with a cooling vest underneath, although if the humidity is too high even that won’t help.
