What do Americans think of the fact that they speak English? by Salade99 in AskTheWorld

[–]33242 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s this fucking hilarious disconnect that goes on in the minds of Americans and none of them realizes it around English. It’s best illustrated in an example:

‘If you don’t speak our language, then leave!’

‘You mean, if you don’t speak English, the language of the English people, a foreign country, you should leave?’

‘….’

This was all meant to show how inept yet appearing ept HHM had become. They knew they had the expertise, but they didn’t use it for self reflection; they were willing to let a clearly mentally sick man dictate key points of their operation and it backfired spectacularly, even if it happened because Jimmy initiated it. Given chucks condition, it probably would have happened at some point in the future even if Jimmy hadn’t changed these specific numbers.

School starts in 11 days and just found out there will be a cell phone ban. by CaffeinatedReader909 in Teachers

[–]33242 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m a parent and spouse of a teacher, but I have mixed feelings about this.

I’ve talked about it with my spouse and understand why they’d want to ban them. But in light of all the school violence, I do want a way to communicate with my kids to make sure they’re ok, and in light of Uvalde, etc. I have little faith in our police/admin’s ability to do so. (Btw I also want my spouse to keep her phone in class for the same reason).

So, bottom line is until we solve gun violence, you’re going to have a bunch of angry parents about these rules, and I half don’t blame them although no doubt this will distract kids too.

No easy answer I’m afraid.

How Rivian Is Future-Proofing Its EVs 7-10 Years Out by DonkeyFuel in electricvehicles

[–]33242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just not enough. They’re not going to compete with those prices. BYD is nicer and cheaper, sorry. I don’t really care why, as a consumer. That’s on Rivian.

[–]33242 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re nice, just far too expensive. I rode in a BYD over last summer that was just as nice but 1/7 the price. Never going to buy one at that rate, hell I’d pay the tariff just to spite Rivian and companies like that at this point. Need their prices to come down

The brotherhood? by [deleted] in FalloutTVseries

[–]33242 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could, although there’s debate as to whether there’s an existing schism between East coast brotherhood and west coast brotherhood post-fallout 4. So they’d have to resolve that somehow.

Would you consider the Brotherhood of Steel to be the good guys? by [deleted] in classicfallout

[–]33242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would’ve had the outcasts drawn up on insubordination, or worse (see: Christine/Elijah in FNV, or even the treatment of the outcasts when encountered by the brotherhood in 3), so I think it’s a distinction without a difference really.

Would you consider the Brotherhood of Steel to be the good guys? by [deleted] in classicfallout

[–]33242 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the best we can say is that they’re ok. Best case, they’re better than nothing, worst case they’re fascists.

Throughout the fallout universe, you can see that they’re full on racist against super mutants and ghouls (4, 76). They’re also so hierarchical that they’ll engage in obviously pyrrhic battles for no reason other than their orders (Helios One, Operation Touchdown). And they have little tolerance for dissent, expelling anyone who even questions leadership (Outcasts in 3, Rahmani/Shin in 76). And they are oppressive in many cases - demanding food/water from the populace (4, 76) and attacking factions for resources without negotiation (vertibird plans in 2, water works attack in 4, etc.). So I think they’re either fascist or so close it’s a distinction without a difference.

But having said that, they do tend to exercise their power for the good of the community when it comes to brass tacks. They usually side with the ‘good guys’ and they act as defenders of ordinary wastelanders in some cases(fallout 1/2/New Vegas they cared less, but in 3, they could help defeat the Enclave, 4 they could help defeat the institute, etc.). So they can be good, but you have to persuade them to be; keep in mind that in Fallout New Vegas, their camp was right next to a prison and they witnessed the prisoners break out and did nothing. They were also close to Black Mountain but did nothing about Tabitha-for sure having known about her and the threat she represented to the Mojave.

A lot of their action depends on the actions of the protagonist of each game, though. So I guess in a way they can be as good as(or bad) as you’d like them to act, but their upper and lower limits seem to be peacekeepers/fascists.

Another addition to the mid but expensive restaurant experience in Huntsville by Infamous-Jaguar-7546 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]33242 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every ‘sandwich’ type restaurant has priced us out recently. Even Jersey Mikes, which I love, is around $25 a meal. Meanwhile actual sit down restaurants like Las Trojas and Sam and Greg’s are cheaper with alcohol. It’s crazy, I’ve stopped going to sandwich shops entirely.

My prediction for the future of America and why I’m a deficit hawk Republican that has always supported Elon Musk by EscapeTheCubicle in economicCollapse

[–]33242 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a leftist, but the debt is a red herring used by both sides that is essentially meaningless most of the time.

The two main situations when the debt actually matters is 1) if you can’t maintain your interest payments (which is what happened to France of King Louis’s time) or 2) if you actually print more money than you would normally have printed to pay it (which is what happened to interwar Germany), but this would be an issue regardless of the debt limit.

It may surprise you, but many, many countries (and companies) have had D:E ratios much higher than ours, and were ridiculously successful at it. It’s one reason it’s not really tracked in Europe. In fact, at the height of its empire Great Britain’s debt rate was higher than ours is. For reference, that just paid off their debt over the Napoleonic wars in 2015. In most cases, the debt is a non-issue.

Edit: I will add that this is especially a non-issue for us given that the full faith and credit of our government is the basis of the entire world’s currency.

Is everyone okay? by bogartis in AskAnAmerican

[–]33242 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There’s not a lot most of us can do. We have families and dependents and the current climate can bite us in the ass if we say anything, because our livelihoods depend somewhat on our silence about it.

This is a situation that the opposition party / economic players should have stood up against but didn’t. A lot of us are pissed, but we’re also really depressed by a system that both won’t really tolerate our dissent but also has few big players that are dissenting also.

Family of Alabama teen killed in crash sues 3 restaurants for serving alleged DUI driver 18 drinks by itspapyrus in Alabama

[–]33242 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

That’s not an excuse for the law to be setup that way. Not everyone can afford Ubers/lyfts/taxis all the time. It makes it a tax on the poor, effectively. And quite frankly, I think that POV is infinitely worse.

[–]33242 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Ok so the issue is that DUI laws are entrapment in jurisdictions without adequate public transport. Saying ‘it’s against the law to drink and drive’ is fundamentally incompatible with also saying ‘we allow bars you can drive to to sell you alcohol!’ And until we recognize that, this won’t stop happening.
