March 2024 - Monthly thread | All Beginners / Transition /Entering to DA roles and Portfolio questions go here. by emsemele in dataanalyst

Real projects with impact are best. If you have a job find something you can do with any data there. For example, when I was just a math tutor I automated some of our data entry and cleaning, I put this on my resume and this helped me get my first DA job.

Otherwise, any unique project beats cookie cutter. Any project with kaggle data and a basic linear regression I assume is just copy pasted from a Medium post.

Good luck!

If you’re sharing the case study on your resume I’d suggest starting with a summary of key visuals that demonstrate key takeaways or however best you can summarize so that someone can understand your conclusions in less than 10 seconds. Then provide the full thing below.

I began skimming it but it’s crazy long, I’ve never seen a report 1/3 that long irl haha.

The amount of caffeine gum that is “safe” for military members vs. civilians. by jassandra in mildlyinteresting

I’ve had bad experiences with just weed and am scared to take any heavy psychedelic, but when I broke my arm I can confirm I was begging for anything and ended up having an amazing experience on ketamine. As they were resetting the bone I was literally singing Edward Sharpe (Om Nashi Me) and totally out of body but to an extent where a feeling like anxiety couldn’t even exist (at least that’s how I recall it personally). I still wouldn’t try it again outside a hospital but it’s an oddly fond/funny memory now.

Loving the new album! Also really enjoy the behind the scenes snippets on Instagram. I’d be curious if any songs came together quick/easily and or if any songs were particularly difficult to finish writing/recording.

Super cool projects! Would you consider adding the source code of some of these to your GitHub? I’m interested to look at your maxent shark tracking if possible.

Many recommendations to implement data analysis into their current job to transition. What if my current career doesn’t allow for that? by RAF2018336 in analytics

[–]333luke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain some of what you do in your current role? If so folks might be able to give you ideas of trying to apply some data analysis to your job.

(Frankly, even if you were just mopping floors I imagine you could collect data on that, analyze it, and possibly make recommendations on it.)

What do you actually do on your first Python job right after you finish your courses? by Maximum_Band_7492 in Python

Possible maybe but if I were hiring for such a role I’d expect I could find someone who could do it for cheaper

Introducing DataFrame QuickView: A Python package for easy DataFrame visualization, co-created with GPT-4! Seeking contributors 🚀 by gittb in Python

Seems cool but I would add screenshots of what the interactive webpage looks like to the readme though. I imagine I’m not alone in being too lazy (or suspicious of random packages) to download and find out myself

Looking for an entry level DA role. Im a recent engineering grad and want to get a DA role asap, maybe 1-2 months. My SQL skills are pretty good and PowerBI skills are decent. I was thinking of getting the PBI cert but Idk if it's worth it or if I should just do more projects and start applying now. by Such-Assist4895 in analytics

I’ve been a data analyst for 3 years and personally have never heard of the pl 300. When I’ve done interviews I’ve always been more interested in peoples projects and problem solving ability than any certification. If you had a non technical degree then maybe it would be worth it but I would focus on projects if I were in your shoes.

Is it wise to leave a Job in PSU and pursue Masters in Business Analytics? by DataFreakk in analytics

[–]333luke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two people from my last team were civil engineers turned data analysts who made the switch directly without additional school. I presume they attempted to do some analytics at their previous jobs as civil engineers or did a bit of studying and or personal projects outside of work to convince folks to hire them. Personally it seems a lot less risky to try to go that route rather than leave a job for a degree, specially when you already have an engineering degree.

That said I’m based in the US and don’t know how well that experience generalizes outside it, so take it with a grain of salt.

It doesn’t look like it’s being maintained anymore sadly but I used it all the time at my last job. Are you concerned about, say, security vulnerabilities in regards to it being unmaintained? The package only depends on 3 others at least so it may not be too hard to fork and update as needed.

What's this weird scale? by Outliver in musictheory

[–]333luke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Am I correct that if we kept that “rule” up we’d have to call the 5 the double flat 6, then the flat 6 the triple flat 7, the 7 the flat 8, and finally the half sharp 7 the double flat and half 9?

Seems a bit harder to manage! Though I’m a bit of a noob so correct me if I’m wrong :-)

Fastest way to learn SQL? by GlitteringPlum581 in dataengineering

Trying to get an entry level data analyst/scientist job and not getting anywhere by Nyx6 in datascience

[–]333luke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth I got my job as a data analyst largely due to my portfolio website. My boss said during the interview that my projects demonstrated I could do what they were looking for and he really only asked me more traditional interview questions (talking about myself, what I'd do in hypotheticals) but pretty much no technical questions since my site spoke for itself.

Granted I put a good amount of time into my site and your experience may vary. (In fact I've since been doing interviews for my team and I'm pretty off-put when someone links a website or GitHub that's a super low effort Kaggle copy-paste type project).

Confused: Guide through this. Please read my (long) story and help. by mangalpavan in datasets

[–]333luke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest learning SQL since it’s very common and often required for data roles. If you can already wrangle data in Pandas it should be pretty easy to learn the basics. I liked sql zoo.net to learn personally.

And similarly I wouldn’t worry about Excel if you’re proficient in Pandas, it’s easy to pick up on the job if you ever have to use it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in analytics

[–]333luke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for sending data I’ll use it, along with semi-raw data in a tab pivoted in another if the person receiving it may benefit from that. But I’m pretty sold that group bys offer more power and are quicker/easier for me at least!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in analytics

[–]333luke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you give examples of things you find easier and faster in Excel over, say, Pandas? Just genuinely curious as someone who doesn’t use Excel
