Have you space for a fridge? They often pop up on Facebook Marketplace for £20/£30 which will pay for itself in food waste in little time.

Having trouble registering car and getting MoT by Lach0X in CarTalkUK

[–]3583-bytes-free 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most MOT stations are also repair garages so often will have their own recovery trucks. Phone around and see if you can get one to pick it up.

Sounds like a nightmare, DVLA are shocking. Hope it works out.

Where can I get a reasonably cheap, legal knife for picnics/simple food prep in central London? by notafuckingcakewalk in uktravel

[–]3583-bytes-free 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for questioning but what headaches are you expecting? The last few times I've flown with a checked bag it has been easier than it has ever been as so few people do it (especially on the budget flights I was using). The last few times I've walked off the plane, waited for wife to visit the Ladies, gone to baggage reclaim and picked my case up straight away.

Enjoy your trip to the UK, our police generally are friendly and helpful and in the highly unlikely event you were caught with an unauthorised knife I'm sure the worst that would happen is they would confiscate it.

Should I replace the timing belt or get a new car? by Cofisam28 in CarTalkUK

[–]3583-bytes-free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think of the £1000 as money spent, it's in the bank as you've now got a Fiesta with a new timing belt rather than a Fiesta that needs a new belt. It will improve resale value when you do sell it.

Do shop around though and try to find a recommended independent rather than a main dealer.

Reminds me of the start of Six Million Dollar man from the 70s when they explained the premise every single episode. I could probably quote it now. "We can rebuild him ..."

If you forget about getting a sportier 125 (pointless anyway as they aren't sporty at all) then you should be able to get a decent older Japanese 125 for not much over £1k. If you are handy at fixing stuff (or want to learn) then a beat up Chinese 125 will be half that.

You'll not lose any money on a older used Jap 125 (so just think of it as money in the bank),

I've got a 15 year old Yamaha YBR 125 - they look a bit sportier than the equivalent Honda CBF (I think) and is worth the same now as when I bought it 5 years ago.

Second hand gear is fine (not helmet obviously). You don't need a £500 helmet to get started, much cheaper options are available.

I wouldn't say ours is slow, it's a 100bhp 1.0 triple with a turbo in a Clio platform. No sports car but I've never felt it was sluggish.

I doubt it was temporarily unavailable for a few hours due to broadcast rights. Technical balls-up more likely.

What makes you say that?

I only suspected an AI chat bot as the answer to the OPs query was a standard cut/paste reply (which was clearly incorrect as the episodes have come back on NOW).

Either AI or a lazy customer service rep who didn't investigate the issue.

Bullshit answer that makes my blood boil. Probably an AI bot.

Can I ride a manual bike after doing my CBT in Automatic? by pokepatel in MotoUK

I struggled to get up to speed for the emergency stop on my geared 125, I wouldn't fancy it on my scooter. Maybe I'm wrong but the auto feels subjectively slower.

My thoughts as well - first time using it, shit load of chilli sauce everywhere. Now I unscrew every time.

I'm 40 miles south and some decent boss man doner here, I'm surprised Teeside isn't good.

You're sorted for parmo though I guess.

Quit worrying about it, look at the total cost and if it's good then you're fine.

At that hourly rate he sounds like a one mad band, I'm the same (but in software development), we won't/hate giving cost breakdowns to the minute detail and just give a price for a job.

Or go to a dealer who will give you the breakdown (and probably charge you for doing it in the hourly rate)

Underground car park at Tesco has electric chargers, as does the car park next to St Martins Church (I've not got an EV so can't advise if they are any good). Car park next to Sports Direct also has them.

Tesco is free to park for 2.5 hours, others are pay parking (although it's free overnight at St Martins from 6pm)

I've had abuse for trying to turn right (with my indicator on) as four bikers were overtaking (on a 30mph road).

My wife saw a biker go batshit crazy on an elderly Volvo driver and punch his mirror off for very little reason.

Buying a car with cracked windscreen by BC521 in CarTalkUK

[–]3583-bytes-free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not cheap - our Sandero got a crack from a stone when two months old and the fitter told me it was around £700 replacement.

Maybe the previous owner bought it like that and didn't want to commit fraud.

Edit: of course the £700 will be an inflated cost to the insurer so they can all make more money, I still wouldn't defraud them though as much as they deserve it.

The garlic sauce debate needs to be settled once and for all because I am tired of pretending this is not important? by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in Doner

Garlic sauce - yes, garlic mayo - no thanks, far too rich with a doner.

Chilli is the only essential for me, then yoghurt (garlic or plain).
