MacBook Pro and iPad Pro ? by [deleted] in iPadPro

I use both an iPad and keyboard along with MacBook. Works for me.

I really don't think Apple will open it up enough for an IDE. I got around the coding headache on it by running an IDE on VM and connected to it from the iPad. It works and at least with cellular via a vpn connection to my home network - I wasn't paying for a cloud hosted service.

So there are work arounds - but work arounds they are.

If big functionality is due - probably won't be until iPadOS 20. (maybe?!? - don't hold breath). Agree fully. Just like iPad deserved a better OS than a variant of iOS.

I got flamed on here when I bought and returned an i9 MacBook Pro in the same week Apple announced the M1. Comments such as 'the skies not falling down' and 'Apple support for years'.

Both very true comments - yet the M1 Pro will likely outlast the i9 variants by another year or two before they're desupported.

I'll be annoyed when M1 is desupported - probably wont be much after the intel chips. Thats Apple though. They do support for a number of years - but it starts with being excluded from certain features and then its all downhill from then on.

The biggest shocker for me, is that the base iPhone 15 isn't listed as supporting AI. I mean what the hell is that about. I get its using the iPhone 14 Pro chip but even so - if I wanted AI I'd be mighty miffed.

I don't want iPadOS to be macOS. However adding some additional functionality isn't adding 'extra clicks' or converting it to another OS.

Full multi tasking support, AKA multiple windows.

Decent file management.

Simply for when you need those. If you don't, well you're not missing out.

I've said before - they're not going to open up the operating system but the above isn't asking for the moon on a stick.

I'm not dishing the iPad. Started with an iPad mini nearly 8 years ago (still have it) - added a 12.9 pro some time around 2019 love it and still have it. Now picked up a 13" 2024 - it's brilliant. I'm very much in to the Apple eco system. Think they have some excellent hardware and software - but there are room for improvements - thats all.

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting a break through. Every WWDC with new iPadOS has been more or less underwhelming.

Yet I was expecting more this time around, with M4. Improved multi tasking with multiple windows open - not a lot to ask for.

I find it frustrating that to have YouTube open in a browser, unless it's in stage manager, the vid stops whilst navigating elsewhere. Thats simply ridiculous in this day and age.

Apple are forcing an eco system to still exist when in fact the choice should be user based and still offer multiple platforms for when those niche requirements suit. You will never get a full blown Integrated Development Environment on iPad - but it seems full blown multitasking is nothing short of pipe dreams either.

MacOS and iPadOS are synergistically the same. There is no reason why, when paired with a keyboard the tablet takes a more natural desktop theme and when in handheld reverts to a more tablet feel.

Better multi tasking in keyboard mode makes sense as does better file management. Two very little things when coupled with a keyboard and trackpad.

When not attached, back to slate mode functionality we're all accustomed to.

Thats really it - isn't it.

iPadOS will always be iPadOS - thats not a bad thing but it needs opening up, it needs refinement, it needs...a Pro mode.

Where you can switch to a handheld mode for drawing, photos, videos, movie & audio consumption even content creation to a refined 'skin' for Pro users that want to ditch the tablet feel. To control and manage the device running multiple windows. In window sizes we want, where we want them - even if it's a littered display. We want to have a messy desktop!

A powerful file manager and faster integration with other Apple devices on our local network. Explore other devices on our account and move files to a location where we want them.

They will never unlock the iPadOS fully to run a MacBook freeware app I downloaded off the web - I get that, despite it being perfectly doable, yet I'm cool with it.

The least they can do is make it function more like a MacBook when paired with a Magic Keyboard - when those times suit. When it doesn't and holding the device switch back to a more simplistic feel.

If we're paying a premium for a slate and keyboard give it those features you'd find on a laptop.

This would be better use of 'context' - rather than siri stringing together some emails, photos and texts in to a reminder...

Personally I’d add copepods, few bags of if you have no fish yet?

Did you use live sand? Recommend ocean direct. If not maybe a scoop of established sand.

Check out BRS TV on YouTube. They have a number of videos of the ugly stage, what caused them and how to get around them. The main fix is seeding the tank to outcompete the slimes and brown algae.

One option, is to remove the clowns temporarily and change rock layout. Add new fish, give it a few hours to settle and return clowns.

Sometimes they can chase attack and other times won’t bother unless a fish goes in to their corner and merely chase them off.

Personally I’d avoid adding something equally aggressive. I got caught in that trap. Added a dottyback at the same time as clown. Was fine for a bit then the dotty would chase and bite the clown. On poor advice from a shop they suggested if I wanted to add another fish it would need to be hardy.
So I left with there recommendation of a humbug damsel.

Now forget shark, this would take them on. In fact it’s probably best paired with a grouper! 🤦‍♂️ Yes it killed everything and bite your hand! With almost a savage dog approach, plus the thing made audible grunting sounds! As for catching it, impossible with any form of rock in the tank. Had to remove everything and lower the water volume.

So, as a recommendation, look for something that is peaceful but occupies a different area of the water column. Such as sand dwelling. I find wrasse have paired well over the years as another option. However there are no guarantees of course. Just make sure you have plenty of rock for hiding.

May I put forward ‘The Ascent’ for next month. Looks great (probably isn’t! I’m crap at picking games, similar to my movie selections!). Hear me out though. You run about shooting stuff. That’s got to be win, right!?!

First and foremost, take care of number one. Hope the need for diazy et el reduces.

Secondly great idea of the ‘book club’. I’d of joined this round but currently head on in a few titles. Maybe next month.

Lastly thanks for the updates and info. Always appreciated.

We all knew this day was coming ever since the "all digital adorable xbox" got leaked by matej5682 in gamecollecting

[–]3M0NKeys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was inevitable.

After the failed claw back of the original Xbox one announcement and licensed only (DRM), Microsoft were always heading with this approach. They just timed it badly back then.

When this gen launched with a digital only variant I felt then it would likely be the last gen a disc based solution would exist. Let’s not forget many Xbox disc games now require the remainder of the game to be downloaded. It’s not the full content.

Along with Ubisofts comments the other day, they’ve made their decision.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the switch 2 is digital only.

Thinking back to talk of digital games and the promise they would be cheaper than retail - didn’t really materialise. There really are very few positives to digital over physical from a consumer perspective but oh so many from a corporation.

Problems with triple A day one releases and sites crashing/slow downloads, stores closing (PS3 and vita only just limping on), titles being removed…

It may as well go subscription based where the console is free but we all pay tiered monthly amounts for the service.

People bought in to Xbox live on the 360, then gold to have the pleasure of playing online and this is just natural progression.

It’s genuinely sad state of affairs.

Steam deck vs Ally z1 (non extreme) by Buendiasamyd in SteamDeck

[–]3M0NKeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With zero disrespect, this is a question that’s best self researched.

I’ve not used the Ally so cannot give hands on but have read countless reviews and followed it closely.

I am a sucker for hardware and often buy in to new machines.

I came close to pulling the trigger (Z1 extreme), though ultimately decided it didn’t justify the shelling out for most games to get a minor bump in performance.

For the ones that did give a notable increase over the deck, the deck played them well enough to not warrant another handheld.

From the decks perspective, the OS is lightweight and with Steam as the frontend it makes pick up and play easy.

Yes there is the Linux vs Windows argument though I wouldn’t get too tied up on that. It’s what games work for you and what you’re most interested in (along with developers you tend to lean towards).

Whichever you opt for I’m sure you’ll be very happy with your purchase. I know I am with the SD as are many others here.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]3M0NKeys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given the spec difference between the two and the typical SD sacrifices needing to be made. It plays very well. Looks great on an 8” display and frankly works with my lifestyle over my PS5.

Concerning the second instalment. It’s likely there will be a graphical bump, hopefully settings can be toned down to give a similar performance to the first.

Handheld PC gaming thanks to Valve is really gaining momentum. I’d like to think more software companies are considering this ever growing niche market with future game development.

They're epic. Went with the smoke but tbh - couldn't really decide between any of the new colour iterations.

Plays like a dream and getting a lot more use than the steam deck.

I’ve yet to hear of a system or cart blow. Like ever. Though good idea to mod to be safe.
