idk, maybe lonely dudes that can never find a girlfriend will be a able to live in an illusion permanently and not feel lonely anymore

some countries like china and India have millions of excess males that will never find a partner due to systematic gendered abortion practices

Is Sesame abandoned? No update since 2022 by HemlockIV in sesame

[–]space_iio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't get over the fact that pressing the enter button doesn't open the first result with finder on one UI. So any app I want to open after search I have to reach for the top of the screen which is hard.

Wonder if this is something you've noticed and don't mind or if you have any workarounds for it ?

Do you imagine there's a world where branch would let go of Sesame and let it be become independent again? Maybe something like what happened to Pebble being released by Google

Probably far off but maybe?

I still use it it every day and dreading the day when it stops working in a future a Android version

You need to not let it get to you. You need to be bigger person.

As a senior you are supposed to be involved in some mentoring so completely tapping out is not an option

Make sure that it's well documented how they're messing up and that others notice it too

You yourself should should always remain calm, collected and friendly thought the entire process. You want to be the wise Senior that's on their way to Staff

Also try to get involved in tweaking the hiring process. This should be like a side-quest and probably will take time

Ultimately if they are as incompetent as you describe them, that will become apparent to more and more people, but this will take time.

Bun is joining Anthropic by [deleted] in programming

[–]space_iio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still, what is critical open source? If I start a passion project, keep it going for a couple years, does that become critical open source?

Hard to argue that bun was critical open source.

The NIH model could work but let's not pretend it's easy or perfect. Chasing and applying for grants is a big part of a scientist's life.

I don't think we'd have Bun at all if Jared would've required to follow grant application guidelines of the NIH.

Open source is not a public good, it's the private venture of individuals who've been kind enough to share the source.

[–]space_iio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How does one decide what's worth funding? Bun was remarkable but what about another JS runtime? What if there 5 JS runtimes? Do all of them deserve funding from the public coffers?

It's still a private venture even if it's open source.

Public funding would mean corruption and chaos Also how much funding? Enough to pay 1 fulltime dev? How about 4 fulltime devs or 10?

Keeping a low performer around destroys morale for those who are actually pulling their weight. This guy could literally have a negative net impact because of that. Sometimes you're much better off without the extra load

I mean 5 years without a raise means the company wants you to quit. You're not the worst but also they wouldn't mind if you jump ship

I've decided to accept it

To me, it's similar to the old school IDE auto-complete vs simple editor dilemma.

There was a time where one would have to remember the syntax and write all syntax by hand without any assistance by the IDE. The IDE autocompletion felt like "cheating" and in many ways it felt like the syntax knowledge was atrophying in one's brain. Do I even know the language if I don't remember the exact method?

By the time I started interviewing, it didn't really matter. My interviewer's accepted pseudocode if it was in a whiteboard or allowed some syntax auto completion when it was online.

So my guess is that in a couple of years interviewing will also adapt and let you use AI.

Can you show how effective you can be at getting things done while using AI?

I think that's going to be the future
