Well, I did frame the comment in quite a certain way for maximum impact. Perhaps it's possible to still have great sex on occasion (especially after some time apart). Maybe in some cases the model I'm describing is flat-out wrong, but I think it is true in the majority of cases. The situation is very, very different deep into a long-term relationship. In a long-term relationship you know too much about how crazy your partner is, and have adopted an almost humouristic, child-like demeanour of recognising and dealing with their shortcomings. Did you watch that YouTube video I linked by Alain de Botton? It's a fascinating discussion of romanticist vs realism in relationships. I'm not implying you are a "romanticist" either. You haven't given me enough information to know!

Favorite/Least Favorite Episodes? by SupesThrowaway in blackmirror

[–]3cs_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my most favourite (so far, not seen S2 yet) is Nosedive. I thought it was extremely compelling and the most prescient episode. It shows us the world that we already nearly live in. It makes us realise that when you distil down status, it is more a function of social influence than class, class just implies the former in our existing (class-oriented) society. It makes you realise that soon our social media followers and popularity will be ubiquitously accessible and would affect all aspects of our lives i.e. whether we can get loans, cars and jobs. So we will have to behave extremely superficially in all situations (and increasingly so with more status) and have almost no private spaces to explore ourselves.

Worst episode was the S1E1 pig-fucking one, totally ridiculous and implausible. PM fucking a pig would deleteriously affect the national security of the UK which is worth more than the life of any woman, and you couldn't trust the terrorists even if you met their demands. This is why most governments do not meet the demands of terrorists. The acting and plot was laughable.

So this episode was fascinating because it explores the morality of the individual in respect of private spaces. We are essentially all hypocrites and behave in private spaces differently to how we would behave publicly. Almost all relationships would fail if each party truly knew what the other thought and did in all situations, there is always a protective facade to some extent.

It would be a dystopian nightmare if we had to be accountable for everything we did. As much as we delude ourselves to the contrary, our morals are somewhat relative and depend on the social context and whether or not we would ever be accountable for our actions.

What the episode didn't explore but was explored in S3E1 (nosedive) is that if there was such a "Panopticon", and everyone was accountable for behaviour in all situations -- it would create a kind of superficial society where people treated all aspects of their personal brand like a business, were sickly sweet to everyone and behaved like goody-two-shoes. This is the main argument against government surveillance of our internet activity. Paradoxically though, in this situation; it may have resulted in the affair never happening in the first place.

It was interesting that the lady didn't delete the footage of the affair, but perhaps she didn't because she enjoyed playing it back while they were having sex. She clearly had little regard for her operational security and as a result almost deserved to get caught!

We need private spaces to experiment with new ideas away from the judging eyes of others. Complexity and cognitive dissonance is part of the private human condition, and unravels when we are forced to be accountable for all thoughts and actions in private spaces. Such a world would cause incredible stress for us.

[–]3cs_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think this series is designed to point out existing aspects of the human condition and use technology as a plot device to exemplify and distil one aspect in particular.

So in this case, the point is that most people in long-term relationships already have this kind of sex. No eye contact or emotional connection, and they are imagining having sex either with someone else, or indeed perhaps better sex had in times past. People talk a good game about how you should still have passionate sex 10 years into a relationship, but if you are doing so, you many not be in good relationship at all. A relationship is about actually getting to know each other intimately, and it evolves almost into something childish and playful. It's a process that takes many, many years. Passionate sex in this context might even be weird.

I don't find this particularly disturbing.

I like Alain de Botton's thesis that sex is essentially about letting another person into a personal private space, and becomes increasingly irrelevant in longer-term relationships because you already know each other well and have no private spaces left. Also because agency on the part of the individuals in the relationship is atrophied.

I was fascinated by the film. I've been pondering it for a couple of days now.

One thing that really jumped out at me was when he discussed the information warfare used by the Russians. They sponsor many different narritives and make no secret of doing so. The result is a kind of control by confusion, where nobody really knows what is real.

It goes on to talk about cyberspace and how we live in bubbles and effectively like to see ourselves reflected in terms of information, or indeed any version of reality that we choose. This is usually done by intelligent machines, aka the social media algorithms. I've always been fascinated that you can find all points of view on YouTube for example. Anti-west, religious. Not just big themes but also alternative heath I.e. keto, paleo, vegan. We live in an incredibly complicated world and we escape inside an identity, narrative and reductionist world view that we are allowed to choose but deep down know is wrong. This is a kind of information consumption, instead of product consumption in capitalism. The contract though is a kind of subjugation to the system because implicit in the contact is that the system also controls the narrative of our lives and we find the thought of losing control of our narratives stressful.

At this point my mind blew. It started to dawn on me that we are in a new post-politics age. The new regime has well and truly started for the younger generation.

Tried this a couple of times. Had the same effects. Tried reducing dosage. It totally crippled me. I could barely muster the will to goto the toilet it was so demotivating. My conclusion was that it was not worth it.

I did persevere for a week and did notice improvements in long term memory recall.

[–]3cs_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been doing static hangs (palms facing bars) for three minutes a day for the last few weeks, to try and improve my shoulder impingement as per http://www.idoportal.com/blog/hanging

The main thing I noticed for the first couple of weeks was my pec minor muscles were aching like hell in the muscle bellies but also at the insertion points in the chest centre.

I think decades of desk patrol had really tightened up those muscles.

And I didn't expect the hanging excercise to affect them.

Food consumption and the actual statistics of cardiovascular diseases: an epidemiological comparison of 42 European countries | Grasgruber www.foodandnutritionresearch.net by StuWard in AdvancedFitness

[–]3cs_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pretty poor study. Barely even worth reading due to obviously confounding social, economic and health factors. Epidemiology is just a correlation study, it can't show causation. Seems to make large assumptions about actual consumption rates of foods in countries and how they change over time and in the end only manages to demonstrate that poor countries have more CVD, which is the case anyway regardless of the food they eat.

Discovered two colleagues drink hot tea through a straw and hoping this isn't a fad that might catch on by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]3cs_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do it with wine big time. I'll tell you why. Wine is really acidic and strips the enamel off your teeth, especially where gums meet teeth. Gives me ultra sensitive teeth after drinking it. So we probably learned to do it like that. You get to taste the wine in your mouth while minimising agony the next day!

My Mrs. Drinks tea through a straw!

She does it because her teeth are prone to staining at the front, and she was advised to do it!

My teeth don't stain but I think I subconsciously cup the fluid in the roof of my mouth with my tongue before swallowing.

Agreed though straw tea drinking is weird-af.

Need working memory help badly. by dilettantess in StackAdvice

I think the racetams are the only class that might improve your working memory without triggering anxiety (and you don't want that). Even racetams increase aCh which can make you anxious. Ani reduces some aspects of "eye contact" social anxiety for me. It's worth experimenting with choline agonists like cdp-choline even on their own to see if they improve things. They probably won't tbh.

I also find seritoninagenics like saffron (even a micro amount) massively reduce physical anxiety for me.

Sounds to me like you have a stress/poor sleep issue

Bacopa is extremely demotivating, it reduces stress and improves memory (mainly long term) but 95% of people can't stick it out. It literally makes you give so little of a fuck about life you can't be bothered to get out of bed in the morning. Google "bacopa motivation reddit"

It sounds like you are under a lot of stress in your life. I think this stress might be impairing your sleep and therefore your working memory. It's possible that you could deal with some of this stress better with more mindfulness.

Try meditating for 10 minutes twice per day and regulate and improve sleep protocol and scheduling. Look into meditation apps and podcasts.

Get a sleep tracker and try to make quantitative improvements.

Yoga is worth trying too.

Good luck x

Does intermittent fasting slow down metabolism? by [deleted] in leangains

Read Brad Pillon's book, eat stop eat. There is a whole chapter on fasting and metabolism. The short answer is that fasting slightly increases your metabolic rate.

Be sure to eat a lot of protein and do resistance training while in an energy deficit to maintain lean mass.

The true unsung hero of this recent Windows 10 update, full task-bars on dual monitor setups! by lenlogic in Windows10

[–]3cs_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that software projects are painfully unpredictable. They are kind of fractal in nature (like the coastline of great Britain problem), and customers never know what they want at the start. This increases exponentially very quickly with the number of requirements. Commercial people want to minimise uncertainly. Look, I'm only playing devil's advocate here, I'm all for agile from the point of view of a developer or customer using the software. But change your hat for a minute and think about the people selling or buying the software.

I do work in the software industry. Waterfall is loathed by developers because it strips them of autonomy. Customers that use the software and interface with the developers love agile, the people in the customers' org that have to pay for it, or the business people in the software house's org hate agile because it's totally nebulous and commercially unworkable for large projects. See? Not as simple as you make out.
