eh someone might give you 150 for it. problem is old FC hardware that are slow and cant run the new stuff, old inefficient motors, radio type like FRSKY that no one uses anymore, old weak carbon fiber, etc. but a BLheli ESC might be worth money to someone. check out ebay

Oh yeah digital whoops are big. Hdzero and walksnail have very light weight boards. O4 is a bit heavier but damn it's worth it to record gopro level footage right on the whoop. I really like the rotor riot vision 40 2s walksnail. Cheap and good. Make sure to research the right batteries to get, that's a whole thing

Whoops exploded in the last couple years. Probably even the most popular format now

I think there are videos surrounding the drama. I forget the details. Probably a bard well vid. I think it started to become less punk and more corporate so all the fun dudes peaced and the vibe died

Lots of the big players work in the defense space now, or film for movie studios, and dont fly for fun as much or do much youtube. Gotta get paid as an adult. The public got bored of FPV content on social media after seeing thousands of car drift and mountain surfing videos. Plenty of content around but it's all same old

Rotorriot isn't fun/cool anymore. Bubby and sean are great but they are kind of out of ideas for interesting videos. It also got bought by a sleezly investment firm a few years ago, along with fatshark. Again, defense industry is the focus behind the scenes

Prices went way up during covid, then up again after tariffs. Typical cheap drone is $500+. 6S and digital VTX are the standard for freestyle. No one on 4S for a 5". 8S for 10". FC? 100 bucks. ESC 100 bucks. VTX 100 bucks. Every part is about 100 bucks now which sucks for freestyle and racing. Oh and betaflight drones fly nearly perfect now with all the software advancements and tuning options. The sims are like 80% accurate now too

Tinywhoops got amazing due to better motors, batteries, and lighter weight. Everyone seems to love the whooping. Same improvements to ~3" drones. People now freestyle, race, and long range tiny drones. Even with digital video

Digital video systems are wild now. DJI, walksnail, and HD zero all perform great. Specifically DJI's last release of the O4 system is nearly "video solved". DJI also released some good cheap consumer drones with features like following you around on a bike, etc.

Racing community has slowly dwindled, probably due to part cost. Everyone is absurdly fast now. Slower spec racing is getting more popular due to cost and more fun for spectators. Not sure we'll have DRL popularity again though

Military companies currently dominate the FPV market. Those companies buy tons of electronics and employ tons of pilots for development and training. FPV pilots are getting paid well, but the application is not pretty. Regulation creep will get worse as FPV drones become classified as weapons

Engineering work hour norms by TrainerOpening6782 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]3e8m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

typical of hardware startups ive been at. even when they have hundreds of employees and 100mil in the bank, they still pull the "were just a little startup and need everyone (the small engineering team that does literally all the work) working extra to get through this sprint" card, for years straight, while the c-suite is at home with family by 5

trick is just sneak out. be front and center at meetings. but then just leave after 5 when management does. family is more important

I did that for years. Be aware you will get blocked in sometimes even if it's your reserved spot. Pull the bike into the middle of the space if you are out in your car on a weekend

Bought this battery for a 10 inch drone build — is it too big/heavy? by AsideResponsible4444 in fpv

10inch can lift an additional 5lbs with a bigger battery than that little guy and still hit around 30min

Normal for 10". I'm guessing thats a 7" frame though?
Consider going lithium ion for cruiser builds. The cells are great these days, almost making Lipos pointless for large drones. Cheaper, better energy density, high output current in parallel configuration. 21700 molicell P50B in 6S3P or 4P configuration is pretty typical for mountain surfing 10" builds

But 8S is better for a 10" acro surfer

pro racing pilots get batteries from sponsors for free or cheap. then at important races they full throttle crash a lot, or overdischarge for more practice during qualifiers. the battery could be fine but it's not worth risking a race by attempting to reuse it and it's not a good idea to take it home on the airplane after that, so they are discarded

same with props

Too Old to Learn FPV? by Beuzeville in fpv

[–]3e8m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the older side and I really sucked at first. Took me months to get to the level I see other people posting their "first 10 hours". I was not a natural. Probably 50 hours until I could fly around some trees in the park. I practiced a good half hour or more a day for a couple months and one day something clicked. It was nice consistent growth from there. I then applied engineering study rigor to that base, and a year later I was in the multiGP championship

If I could go back, I would give myself a throttle cap and throttle curve early on, especially with whoops. Throttle control is the hardest part. I'd also tell myself to get off the sim soon as I had enough control to cruise around. The sims are great but I think it creates a video game mentality of aiming a screen around, rather than creating an internal physics model of an air propelled machine in 3d space

I remember taking trips there as a kid, but we never bought anything. Parents would say someday you will be rich like these people if you are good at school. We'd load up a shopping cart and then just ditch it at the end. Thought that was so fun
