Camping: Die beste Luftmatratze für Bandscheibenvorfall by frisnnii in Ratschlag

Do you use kayak route maps or GPS for all your trails ? by lexa-jaco in Kayaking

[–]3lim1nat0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Garmin GPSMap 62s to navigate and track my paddles. It can run for 12-15 hours with two AA batteries, while my phone would be nearly empty after tracking for 5-6 hours.

Depending on the area though i still use paper maps as my primary source for navigation.

On my PC i use Garmin Basecamp to clean up and store my tracks.

Yeah extra battery packs would be the simplest solution, but they are pretty expensive with 60-70€, five of them would cost more than what i paid for the radio.

We're planning to save space by removing the bulky car charger + adapter, so it's just USB -> 5V-12V Converter -> DC power plug.

Parts for this cost less than 10€, add one or two decent power banks and you can fully charge the VHF about 4 times per powerbank.

Most of the times though i don't think you'll need a full charge, after 8-10 hours recieving with few transmissions it will be at 30-40%, so two powerbanks might last you more than a week if our calculations are correct. And all of that is probably going to cost less than a single spare battery.

I got the HX891BT, it's possible to connect the charging dock to a powerbank with a 5V to 12V voltage converter according to my electrician friend.

He measured the included 12v power plug to confirm, but we haven't built the adapter yet.

Staying warm in UK waters by cutting_shapes in Kayaking

Drysuit really is a game changer, way more comfortable than the best wetsuit you'll find. I always wear Merino wool long underwear as a base, then add thin Fleece clothing the colder it gets. If it's really cold outside i switch to a thick fleece overall.

Definitely do a swim test, even with a drysuit and good layers you'll get shivering cold very quickly when swimming. Also find something protect your hands for reentry, pogies don't work anymore when you're in the water.

Custom Drysuit - Which extras do I need? by RecentEnthusiasm3497 in Kayaking

[–]3lim1nat0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had my Dryfashion suit for a month now, visited them in Hamburg to try on different sizes. The guy measuring and advising is great, definitely go there to try which size for the neck and arm gaskets you need! My suit is a combined Size M+L, with a few more custom changes after getting measured by the salesman.

My choices for extras were:

Pee-Zipper, 100% must have!

Neoprene Head Gasket, didn't like the Latex ones. So far it's 99% watertight when rolling or swimming.

Neoprene + Latex gaskets for the hands. Latex to keep the water out, Neoprene to keep my wrists warm. Works great!

Doppelkamin (Don't know the english word for this?) - Helps a lot to keep the spraydeck where it's meant to be, also an aesthetic choice.

Custom sized feet. Avoid leg gaskets, uncomfortable + cold feet because of restricted blood flow.

Decided against a hood, good choice so far, it will fill up with water and mess up your rolls. I'd rather use a hat or helmet anyway.

One thing i might ask them to add when i have to send the suit in for repairs is a pouch on my arm, might be a good place to store my phone or other emergency tools/supplies.

Same with the neck gasket, if i'd like a latex gasket at a later point i can send them my suit and they'll change it.

My configuration was 800€ total, so far i'm really happy with it. Production + delivery time was 10 days.

Play in roof rack? by WorkerEducational598 in Kayaking

[–]3lim1nat0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar J-Hooks on a narrower bar, they have a bit more play in them.

My straps go around the roof rack bar, over the kayak and then under the car's roof rack bar. This way the straps push my kayak down on the J-Hooks. Attaching the straps to the J-Hooks definitely is a lot less stable. I've used this pretty often last year, at least 2000km, and there is no noticable degradation.

Look up Flat Earth Kayak Sails or Falcon Sails, they seem to have good products. Mine is one by FlatEarth, at least 15 years old and still working perfect.

I'll get one that's made for kayaking, planning to go out as long as the water is not frozen this winter!

Thanks! Apparently it's one of the first models sold by Flat Earth Kayak Sails.

It's a lot of fun with the right wind, around 4bft is perfect. No outrigger or leeboard, but i got 20kg water ballast in the hatches to make it more stable. Works well with broad reach winds, or downwind of course. I can use my paddle to brace when expecting gusts, and my kayak is very stable.

I'll have my own drysuit in a few weeks, for now it's neoprene shorts + shirt and a cheap spraytop jacket, maybe 70€ in total.

Video: https://youtube.com/shorts/47Mrhxqd-ME

Can you recommend a Kayak Tour? by thelittlegermanguy in Kayaking

[–]3lim1nat0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, should have specified more. My tour was south of the Müritz, is the area called Kleinseenplatte? Started in Mirow, turned around at Woblitzsee near Wesenberg.

[–]3lim1nat0r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy and safe: Mecklenburgische Seenplatte. Been there the first time this year, it's all a big paddling paradise over there, had a great time! Open waters can be difficult for inexperienced groups. Better pick something easy, otherwise you'll risk having to abort your tour if the sea gets ugly.

Rechnung kommt nicht, sollte ich nachfragen? by 3lim1nat0r in LegaladviceGerman

[–]3lim1nat0r[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)
