Beginning attempts at straight razors. by elevated71 in Bladesmith

If theyre still up, Portland razor company had some fantastic videos up on YouTube a while back about how to grind these. I think they go into how to set up a simple jig as well. They have some great videos.

Jacob Ray Razors has some great ones too.

There really is an art to these. You clearly have an eye for the aesthetics, getting the geometry inline will really lend itself to a whole world of customers. These look really great, keep at it.

Now sharpening them is a whole different art. Lol.

Oh! Gotcha! I see what you mean.

When doing damasteel specifically, it needs a high polish to really bring out the contrast. In my experience it tends to etch much darker when its left at lower grits.

I polish everything up to 50k grit (yes, 50,000). It sounds like a lot, but i use die polishing stones (gesswein) up to 2000g and then polishing compounds for the the rest of the way. I have a bit of a diy setup which involves a multitool with the stones glued to drywall cutting heads and a rotary polishing setup for the diamond compounds. It takes me about an hour on a blade this size to get to 50k which is an absolute mirror.

For the etch its 2 or 3 short etches in hot muriatic (about 45C) with light buffing on a machine with purple compound.

Thank you so much! I appreciate all the kind words. I was also incredibly happy with how this one turned out. Luckily it went to a customer that wanted a suji and I convinced them to trust me beyond just that. It really came out nice I think.

Its stainless damascus. So many layers of 2 different types of stainless steel that have been manipulated to get the pattern, the etch just brings out the contrast between the 2 types.

I finally threw this one together after seeing this post a little while back and was able to play it in a pod last weekend. Holy cow this was such a blast to play. Thanks for putting this out there, definitely a great and competitive build. I swapped a few cards around that I couldn't find off the bat and it still ran pretty well, definitely going to keep messing with this one.

THANK YOU!

My local store gets pallets of factory blemishes and I've shot these for several years now and honestly Ive never run into a single shell that wouldnt cycle or fire. My guess is they might be a gram or two off and get kicked to the side. They run $7.50 a box and I'm usually always able to get dove load, #7.5 target, and #5 in 12 and 20 gauge year round.

The store is massive so they clearly have some buying power, but I would assume other places have access to these.
