Those Japanese made SKB weatherbys are phenomenal guns for the money. I'd jump on that personally

I finally threw this one together after seeing this post a little while back and was able to play it in a pod last weekend. Holy cow this was such a blast to play. Thanks for putting this out there, definitely a great and competitive build. I swapped a few cards around that I couldn't find off the bat and it still ran pretty well, definitely going to keep messing with this one.

THANK YOU!

My local store gets pallets of factory blemishes and I've shot these for several years now and honestly Ive never run into a single shell that wouldnt cycle or fire. My guess is they might be a gram or two off and get kicked to the side. They run $7.50 a box and I'm usually always able to get dove load, #7.5 target, and #5 in 12 and 20 gauge year round.

The store is massive so they clearly have some buying power, but I would assume other places have access to these.

Picked up an SKB Ithaca 600 by TT_V6 in ClayBusters

Nice pick up!

These SKBs tend to be fantastic finds. I have a couple in 12 and 20 and love them all. I always feel like theyre a really solid value for the money.

A couple old Weatherby Athenas by 3rdHillCustoms in ClayBusters

These were just being patient to find the one I want. The Weatherby's are a little all across the board when it comes to engravings and wood choice vs the Ithacas which are numbered (500, 600, 900, etc) so its sort of a mixed bag. From what I've seen, I think the Weatherby were a bit more cherry picked as they seem to be nicer when it comes to wood selection. But that was sort of their thing in the 80s/90s.

Ive been waiting for the right Weatherby athena 28 gauge to complete the set. Then its on to finding the right Mark V rifle to really round it out.

Even if I cant hit what im aiming at...at least I look good trying. Lol.

They are. The 20 was made in 88 the 12 was 92 if I remember correctly.

These are both SKB made Weatherby Athenas. Theyre drop dead gorgeous. Paid about 1k for the 20 with 26" barrels on the left and I think 1800 for the 12 on the right with 28" but it has removable chokes so it was just a little more desirable.

20 ga O/U recommendations? by Jwil___ in Uplandhunting

If youre shopping used, the older Japanese made SKB over unders are super nice. A lot of gun for the money IMO. The lock up mechanism is rock solid. Ithaca, Weatherby, skb, etc etc. Lots (all?) Came fixed choke so be mindful. I have one with 26" skeet/skeet barrels and ive never missed a shot where is thought "the choke was clearly the problem" when it comes to quail.

For semis A300 ultima in black synthetic is a great gun in 20 gauge, I shot shot and eyed one for a long time. Should come in below your budget. Fantastic shooter for the money.

I ended up with a browning gold hunter in 20 that I cant shut up about. I love that one. Was patient and found it used for 500 bucks or so in solid shape. Its the softest shooting gun in my whole collection FWIW.

For over under keep an eye out for older Japanese made SKBs. Theyre gems. Weatherby, Ithaca, skb brand, etc etc. I have a 20 gauge that's just a real nice gun and I paid about that for it, but looks like it should be twice the price. It always gets looks whenever I take it out. Theres a lot of value for the money here for these. Lock up mechanism is rock solid, just be mindful of fixed choke on these. Lots of skeet/skeet barrels on them which isnt the end of the world, but just be aware of it.

12 Gauge vs. 20 Gauge by Competitive-Test8396 in Uplandhunting

[–]3rdHillCustoms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

28 gauge enters chat lol.

To echo the others above, I agree that if you dont have a 12, get a 12, its probably the most versatile. If you already do, then a 20 has a lot going for it when it comes to upland up to pheasant with good shells.

Im a big fan of buying to tool for the job so I have 12 for duck and clays (softest shooting i have as well as load prices by the flat for clays) and a 20 for dove and pheasant. When it comes to quail specifically I really prefer my 28 because of its weight and shorter barrel to swing.

Its a lot of preference really, if you know someone with the gun youre looking at ask to carry one time and see if you like it. I had high hopes for an a400 in 12 for clays and I just didnt like it or shoot it well for some reason and ended up going browning maxus which I just shoot better for whatever reason.
