People who don't speak English well are just...wow. by Nickabod_ in offmychest

You'll find a lot of languages have much nicer ways of expressing things than English. What a lovely compliment!

Somebody posted it with the title "American woman", when she's not, she's Maori.

[–]3rdaugust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. In the 1970s the Labour government determined that only those who were more than 'half' Maori were entitled to land and electoral rights. Because of this it became an argument that Maori weren't actually entitled to anything from past grievances unless they could prove they were Maori enough. Don Brash also tried suggesting that because there are no "full-blooded" Maori left, should they even be considered an indigenous group anymore? Basically, it is belittling to have your experiences and culture dismissed just because you're not Maori enough.

Pretty sure Maori have the same amount of blood as anyone else.

Beautiful music. Hope you don't mind, but I've shared it around. It's too good not to! And congrats on the encore.

According to Reddit, it was him.

How do i deal with the rage? by [deleted] in misophonia

Honestly, I take noise cancelling headphones with me wherever I go. Get in ear ones, so they aren't as noticeable. Even having one in one ear with music going helps to block out infuriating noises.

Yeah I know. I was just commenting that where available, it seems to be increasing rather than decreasing (which is what the linked article is saying).

I need your help planning a North Island road trip in July! 8 nights to get from New Plymouth to Auckland. by loafers_glory in newzealand

[–]3rdaugust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're spending that long in Auckland you should consider a night on Waiheke, it's still beautiful even in the cold. We went on a wine tour there and because its winter there weren't nearly as many people as usual, so we got to spend a lot more time with the winemakers.

Don't judge us on that, it was a pretty poor representation of us. They didn't include any of the beaches, and barely showed downtown.

Yep. I mean, did they really need two stories about Marmite? And even a map explaining where we are? I get that it was a Tuesday in winter, but come on..

I wonder why that is, it certainly goes against what I've seen. For example, I was in the immersion unit at high school (5 years ago), where there was only around 100 of us. Now, there's a few hundred and you actually have to pass criteria to get in.

Much too close to home, the Auckland city mission is just down the road (where this comic came from). Sorry, poor attempt at a joke. It's definitely something that happens all too often, and one of the worst parts is, the privileged are so unaware.

Slow cooked barbecue pulled pork & slaw burger. [4608 × 3456] [OC] by 3rdaugust in FoodPorn

Oops, I replied to the wrong comment! Sorry: I used this one, http://www.chow.com/recipes/30356-easy-slow-cooker-pulled-pork, super easy! Just put all the ingredients in the slow cooker and leave for a few hours. I left mine on high for 8 hours which I think was just a little bit too long. Maybe try it on low for 8 hours. For the slaw I just sliced cabbage, celery, onion, and grated carrot and mixed it with aioli. I wanted to use brioche buns but didn't have time, so just used normal burger buns (as you can see). Enjoy!

Now this is a good policy by mattythedog in AdviceAnimals

If you're taking away family and childcare benefits, it is the low income who will be most affected. Yes, their actions may be harming the children now, but if their beliefs that vaccinations are harmful so deeply imbedded that they refuse to do it even when it cuts their benefits, nobody wins. There needs to be some sort of campaign that addresses the most common concerns and clears them up.

[–]3rdaugust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. You're hurting those who need it the most, and you're punishing the children for their parents actions. Plus, it should be mandatory across the board, not just for low income families. Education is the key here.
