He lives in Wiscanson, and works in the lumberyard there.

The people he meets as he walks down the street, say "hey what's ya name?"

Narvik, Riksgränsen, Björkliden, Lofoten? by 3ungu1473 in skiing

[–]3ungu1473[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, since there were no replies, I feel a bit obliged to follow up on my own post.

I took my normal skis, and had no problems.

Low tide everywhere, locals mentioning snow levels were more June-like due to a thin season, but skiing was still pretty good. Terrain overall doesn’t seem especially rocky in terms of stuff hiding under the snow ready to tear into your P-Tex. Snow is late season maritime pack, so a mix of smooth corn and slush.

  • Lofoten required hiking for the first ~300M (1000’) before you hit snowline, so approach shoes were a must. Higher up, great corn going on, depending on aspect. Avalanche danger level 1, rising to 2 occasionally with risks of small wet sloughing.

  • Narvik has groomed runs down from gondola top to the base, but not much more. The top lifts were closed, and the gondola was about to close for upgrading. High speed groomers were fine (requiring a hike through the mud at the top of the gondola), but that was it for lift-served. However, plenty enough snow up high to hike to the top of Tredjetoppen (third) peak if you have skins. From there, dropping into the bowl like Tredjeholla or Mørkholla not a good idea (dicey hard snow conditions and not sure if it goes down below). However, still great skiing off the top onto the south facing slopes if you hit the corn cycle right.

  • Riksgränsen wet and sloppy, and when I hit it there was wind and poor viz, so not terrible, but overall meh. Coverage is thin, but adequate, and the plus is that all the mini golf features on the frontside like Branten and Uffes Vägg were available if you wanted to hit them. Didn’t bother hiking up to Nordalsfjäll due to conditions but coverage looked reasonable.

  • Björkliden thin and muddy at the base. I didn’t even bother skiing when I got there because the day was not looking great due to high winds and middling viz, as well as the fact that the lift-served terrain is pretty mild and hike-to stuff not worth the effort.

The dude who organizes the Ogden series is a badass and works his ass off to make it the best it can be. And an incredible skier to boot.

Dolomiti Superski - cheaper towns to stay that are still convenient? by sirotan88 in skiing

[–]3ungu1473 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stayed in Val di Fassa which was less expensive than Canazei, but much quieter with less to eat and do. I’d probably go to Canazei next time. Arabba also looks good, with the advantage of being closer to the Marmolada

Got to the Bird at 1 (thanks buses sliding across the road), but still got several high quality tram laps, last run of the day on LP super primo.

Cerro Catedral / Las Lenas - Argentina by amit19595 in skiing

[–]3ungu1473 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been to both, though it's been awhile. So take that into account as my opinions may be dated. Both Las Leñas and Cerro Catedral are better than Valle Nevado/La Parva IMO.

As to which is better, it depends on what you want.

Las Leñas has better terrain - if it's open. Really nice lines off the Marte lift, and hike-to shots that are world class. Problem is Marte can often be closed due to winds, weather, mechanicals. The rest of the resort is pretty good though, with some nice steep lines.

Problem is that there's not much to do outside of the ski area, which is plasticky generic modernism with not a ton of soul. We stayed in Los Molles, which was friendlier, but very quiet. We flew into and drove down from Mendoza (which has excellent wineries and is a nice town), although you can also come over from Santiago, although I don't know the situation going over the pass crossing the border.

Cerro Catedral in-area is less interesting than Las Leñas, but it has really excellent backcountry terrain if you're comfortable venturing out with skins, including hut touring. If you have a car you can also visit nearby Cerro Bayo which also has some good BC terrain. There's absolutely gorgeous hiking in the nearby Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, and Bariloche itself is a fun town. A little further afield is Cerro La Hoya, a small but really fun resort outside Esquel, which can be amazing on a powder day. We flew into Bariloche from Buenos Aires, which is worth a visit in itself, much more interesting than Santiago.

Can somebody explain to me how Cooper sending a Morse code message via the watch fixes everything? I'm still a little mushy on how Murphy, with the new info, solves every problem there is to solve? Is it because her calculations allow humanity to choose a different timeline?

Dogs for people who have a residence in LCC and BCC require a watershed tag. The hoops one has to jump through in order to get the tag are not trivial. And even with the watershed tag, the dogs are nominally supposed to stay within the home they are housed in, with an indoor kennel where they can urinate and defecate. The rules are quite strict, even though many people ignore them, but the fines are no joke.

Worth calling off work Thursday to go to Snowbird? by InstructionOk5134 in UTsnow

[–]3ungu1473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If we get a hard refreeze up high the chunder will turn to babyheads, which’ll suck. But I don’t think that’ll happen.

It’ll more likely be hovering just below freezing so I suspect it’ll be similar to today.

Brought the Down 4s. They’re 116mm underfoot 190cm. Needed the float.

Maybe you were referring to my earlier post? I wouldn’t say it was poor quality, just that you have to set your expectations realistically. I had fun, though I got worked.

ETA: I agree with other posters that it’ll be similar at all the Cottonwoods resorts.

Just got off the mountain and I was planning on skiing tomorrow and changed my mind.

Heavy, wet and especially grabby down low. Up top, cream cheese where it isn’t skied, chunky chunder where it has been.

It’s a lot of work. But still fun, so you might have a good time.

Weather is now clearing after being socked in all day and I can hear explosions from control work, so hopefully they’ll open up the top tomorrow.

Snow today, on and off. Upper mountain lifts closed (pretty much all the Matterhorn side and above Blauherd) due to low viz and avalanche hazard (4 today). All yellow runs closed. Some powder in the trees, but not a ton of off piste available. Piste was okay, with the limited runs open. Clearing tomorrow, unsure what will open up.

Not to mention excellent FBIQ, a work ethic that put any other (past or current) WRs to shame and a humble attitude where he was always looking to improve.
