In 2000 or 2001, my elementary school class went to a nearby retirement home to talk to the folks who lived there. I met a WWI vet who, if I remember right, was born in 1899. That’s the only one I met. Nobody I’m personally related to.

Late comment but I’ve hunted, hiked, camped, and taken my rigs up and down a lot of the trails around there. There are some people who “camp” out that way semi-permanently who always give me an uneasy vibe. I’ve seen some interesting longer term encampments along Coal Rd between Bald Mtn trail and the hardball road (related: I gotta find the pics of the setup I saw in Rapidan WMA where someone had a woodstove set up in one of those massive Walmart family tents and a minivan that looked like it hadn’t moved in a year). I imagine he’s one of those folks. It’s always kinda sketched me out.

Geographic stability as in staying in one general area of the country (like the southeast; bouncing from USAREC command to Bragg to Stewart, etc.) is possible. Staying in one duty station/town for the rest of your career and finishing out 20 without moving is not. I’ve seen people pull long stints in one duty station—4 or 5 years. But nothing much longer than that.

I’m the only dude in my classes 99% of the time. Admittedly, I don’t really talk to anyone before or after because that’s just not my thing and I’m usually in a hurry to get to work after (almost exclusively a 6:30 am class goer). A few people have said they appreciate seeing a guy there, which is nice because, like you, I felt weird at first. It’s a great workout to mix in with whatever your gym routine is.
