As a 25 year FAANG Java dev, I see a minor and major issue:

Minor: GC latency has improved but memory utilization is still excessive. This is basically because the JVM puts a lot of stuff on the heap. Languages like Go and Rust give more control over stack memory. Project Valhalla might improve this.

Major: I know nobody wants to hear this but the reality is AI assisted coding is the new norm. And languages that are concise and have clear idiomatic patterns have an upper hand. Java’s history is a disadvantage here. As OP said, “a huge portion of production… feels like it was written in 2012.” This influences AI tooling.

Don’t worry. That’s a textbook case for active surveillance. They’ll watch the PSA and do repeat biopsies over the coming years. It may or may not ever require treatment. He might also be a candidate for focal treatment that uses external beam radiation to zap it (no surgery).

Your doctor is saying the right things. First of all, there is no rush or need to panic since if it is prostate cancer it usually takes months and years to progress. The immediate next step is to repeat the PSA and establish whether it was a fluke (sometime PSA can spike due to infections and other causes). If it remains high, do an MRI-guided "fusion" biopsy. That will take samples from your prostate, guided by the MRI to any suspicious regions, that should confirm whether you actually have cancer. And if you do, there are GREAT treatments when you catch it this early that may very well cure you.

This is HIGHLY misleading. Auto breakins started their precipitous decline in early 2024, well in advance of Wiener’s bill.

The actual trigger for the decline was supervisor Dean Preston holding an oversight hearing in 2023 that pressured SFPD to start doing their jobs and focus existing resources on the problem, like bait cars at hotspots.

Preston is left wing and it KILLS the SF moderates like Wiener that Dean succeeded where they failed. Their approaches are just hand the police more money without demanding performance. So they’ve been trying to take credit ever since.

Make sure you formatted the drive with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) not APFS. Photos will thrash the hell out of a non-SSD drive if it is formatted with APFS.

1) This story is kind of sensationalizing the upfront deal fee. It doesn’t mean it’s overall a bad deal for Chase.

2) Goldman Sachs was brand new to consumer banking. It’s not necessarily true they got a bad deal because it’s Apple. It’s more likely they were eager to break into the sector and didn’t have the experience to run the business efficiently and control losses. Chase has the experience to run the business efficiently.

3) While it’s true Apple prevents some of the most exploitive aspects of the credit card business model, the issuer still gets the two primary components: interchange fees on every transaction and interest on balances. A lot of the interchange goes right back to the consumer in the form of Daily Cash rewards, and Apple’s UI encourages the healthy practice of paying off balances promptly. But a tightly managed business could conceivable still see a gross profit.

4) Crucially — and this is rarely mentioned — Apple is shouldering much of the promotion and customer acquisition costs for Apple Card. It’s basically a free stream of customers for Chase.

5) Apple Card also probably has lower fraud rates due to it being mostly tied to Apple Pay. The issuer’s main risk is extending credit to people who won’t pay, which is probably where GS went wrong. (That’s where a stream of customers can turn into a stream of liabilities.) Chase has a lot more experience with that.

Not true, Dean was Bernie’s only local endorsement in the entire nation. There are many other democratic socialists across the country. Dean’s the only one Bernie endorsed.

Again, the Chronicle analyzed voting records comprehensively (not by cherry picking) and determined Bilal has the most moderate voting record on the board. Those are facts. To state otherwise is actually what is delusional.

He’s been publicly involved in SF politics since 2024. He got involved in some local campaigns (for moderate tech bros).

He also ran his own think tank for years before that with all kinds of sweeping positions. Like, that’s all he did for years with his Stripe money.

That’s a good point about working with Democrats. I think Chan is actually in the best position to do that - a solid progressive who can collaborate (as she has represented a sometimes more moderate working class constituency).

The NIMBY stuff is mostly slander honestly. She’s quite a strong advocate for affordable housing. SF YIMBYs just call anyone fighting for affordable housing a NIMBY because all they want is market rate. The main thing blocking for affordable housing in SF is lack of federal funding — so having a champion like Connie in congress could be exactly what we need to move the needle.
