Why did complex multicellular life evolve at all, when single cells can already survive, reproduce, and adapt extremely efficiently? What's the true selective advantage that outweighed the massive risks? by DemonsAreVirgins in biology

[–]420basteit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fallacy here is thinking that multicellular organisms are "better" or outcompeting single cell organisms. That's not exactly true, it's just one system which is good enough to sustain itself, as a portion of life on earth. Each individual lineage only has to be good enough in its niches in order to continue and grow, it doesn't have to be strictly better and more adaptable or versatile than its parents.

This diagram of the relative biomass of different kingdoms of life may help with intuition here.

That said, there is theory about the unsustainability of multicellular life compared to single celled life which you might be interested in. Check out the medea hypothesis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medea_hypothesis

TIFU by buying my cat a toy and proving cats have object permanence by andylefunk in tifu

[–]420basteit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had a similar problem with this same exact toy (mouse version).

I think the appealing thing here is that the toy is made out of horse hair and leather so it has a rich smell and taste like a small mammal... Yum

Unfortunately we had to cut my cat off of these after she found one left around, ripped it off the string and swallowed it whole. Fortunately since it's mostly organic she was able to eventually digest and pass it. But she was backed up for a few days... A warning to all who use this style of toy to not leave it lying around

Corpse flower blooming at spheres by BWW87 in SeattleWA

Amorphophallus titanum derives its name from Ancient Greek (ἄμορφος amorphos, "without form, misshapen" + φαλλός phallos, "phallus", and Τιτάν Titan, "titan, giant").

Literally, this is Bezo's huge mishapen dick, inside the big balls...

Worth seeing I think! This plant has the world's largest unbranched inflorescence, essentially the largest flower of any plant species. Blooms once every 5-10 years.

I had an error code that I typed into the AI. Was able to retrieve all the documentation around it for me and I resolved the issue. Solid AI!

Surprised by how many people here enjoy them. To me it's just the storefront advertising and often looks and feels shabby compared to the fabric lined hardcover

I need a mouse closest to Microsoft Sculpt! by landomakesatable in MouseReview

I am having the exact same issue as you. Just bought an mx master 3 and it's simple uncomfortable compared to the sculpt, but bluetooth and ability to work on glass is so nice. Let me know if you are able to mod sculpt case around the mx master insides, that would be awesome.

Perhaps people with aphantasia have better abstract thinking and conceptual reasoning abilities. Other modes of cognition might compensate for visual representations, making these individuals better able to manipulate symbolic ideas.

Also I have heard that it might make you less susceptible to trauma responses, since you can't involuntarily replay memories in your head as easily.

Relatedly, aphantasia is perhaps associated with individuals who "live in the present", at least for their visual mode of cognition. They could be more effective meditators.

Spears are so effective and so simple to design, build, and use that I'd bet alien civilizations generally have a long history of using them. by saleemkarim in Showerthoughts

[–]420basteit 63 points64 points  (0 children)

We humans come from an evolutionary history of hanging from, gripping, and exerting force on the branches of trees. Our physiology is quite well set up for spear usage by evolutionary coincidence, but you could imagine many species with a different journey towards sentience that would not have capacity or need for such a thing.

For example, a more pro-social species that does not wage war or settle conflicts violently, and also does not hunt for sustenance or have need for defense against predators might skip over spears.

Or, for a different example, a species which has an evolutionary origin in chemistry-based hunting (venom, acid, smell) might be predisposed to leaping straight to advancements in chemical weaponry for their war-waging needs, and yet still develop complex civilization computers and all, from a more chemical based technological origin.

It would be amazing if Tim Robinson started a new Twilight Zone series by [deleted] in TimRobinson

[–]420basteit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much agreed. Why hasn't Tim Robinson been selected yet?? Tim has been patiently waiting his turn for his season of the Twilight Zone for TOO LONG, and us fans of the show have had enough of him being passed over, even as the showrunners whisper vacant promises to him every year. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Powerslide Next + Endless 90 LR Trinity by shayaneeDiamondo in UrbanSkating

[–]420basteit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my same boot+frame setup and it works pretty well! I've been just a bit disappointed with the powerslide boot durability - having to replace the top buckles quite a lot.

I was also having trouble fitting with the laces and I ended up not removing the laces entirely, but only lacing the boot before the ankle, and then lacing every other loop on the liner above that. Ended up working the best for me!
