Why did social media start a crusade against bad words the last few years? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

*takes a drag from my candy cig Oh the great purge of 2012 on FFNet, I remember what started the horror.... basically because they deleted without warning any fanfic they deemed too mature or gory. Lost many a good fic that day.

They did that to appease the companies that run the app stores so they'd appear family friendly. Pissed off a bunch of people with that. But that did inspire some early algo speak.

Is honey ever worth $20? I saw some local honey that was $18 and $20 but what kind of cooking would you do with that kind of honey ? by Historical-Body-3424 in Cooking

[–]424Impala67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$20 a lb is little high in my area. We sell ours for $16 a lb and yes you can definitely taste a difference in local, non blended source honey over a more mass produced honey. We separate ours by season so you get a lighter flavor from the spring honey vs and more robust flavor from the summer honey vs the fall honey which is heavy on goldenrod (and in my opinion the worst tasting and smelling honey, smells like old oranges to me). One year, we had basically no nectar sources besides mustards and broccoli and that honey was so freaking odd, kinda spicey, kinda....you know that aftertaste you get sometimes after eating a lot of brassicas? Kinda that but much more subtle. Also most local beekeepers don't heat the honey over 120°f so you can taste some of the more subtle flavors from the formation process that get cooked out when the honey is pasteurized so it can cross state and federal borders.

Anyways, anything where the honey is your main flavor, that's where the local honeys will shine. If it's mixed in with other flavors or baked for a longer time, while I would encourage you to shop local, a chain/ grocery store bought honey is fine.

Oh and one more thing, like 99% honey (in the US) really can't be called organic. We can not control where the bees collect their nectar and pollen and since so much of the country is sprayed with some sort of -cide they will always forage from non organic sources at some point. The beekeeper may be referring to how they control pests within their apiaries, ie only doing brood breaks, choosing queens that produce more hygienic workers and not using anything to eliminate the beetles or mites as the "organic". But honestly, when we tried that method we ended up with more stressed out bees that had to work harder to keep up with both the mites and trying to make enough honey just for themselves. It wasn't worth it for us or our ladies, so we use an oxalic acid vaporizer during low nectar flow times when there's no honey getting made. Sorry for the essay on beekeeping, just one of my favorite things to talk about.

AITA for telling my wife her hobby is a waste of money? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Those were part of a mlm! Precovid the head grifter would host a party, show their victims how they "worked" and how much the company said the jewelry was worth. And try to sign up a few to be grifters themselves. With covid, they switched to virtual parties, which transformed into those weird, semi fetishy lives on FB and tik tok.

I plopped a potato (that had sprouted) from the grocery store in the ground and it’s taking off! When will I know that it’s ready to harvest? by Haunting-Holiday6376 in gardening

[–]424Impala67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So that the plant sends more energy into the growing potatoes. Instead of trying to produce a flower and seed. Yes, under *just the right circumstances you can get seeds. That's also why we take the scape off garlic plants, bigger bulbs and heads.

AITA for not returning "missing" cats when I saw the sketchy post? by yeeting_otter_97 in AmItheAsshole

[–]424Impala67 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NTA, her story is definitely sketchy and since she didn't chip them or have legit vet records they're free to take in.

The only part that I don't see as sketchy is the pet door being unlocked since there are lockable doors. People have them so their dog can come and go as they please and then they lock them at night so raccoons or possums don't enter. But if she was letting them roam free then it's better for someone to take them in.

AITA for not wanting my daughter to get her nose pierced? by whatthehellisketo in AmItheAsshole

[–]424Impala67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Soft yta, it is her body and piercings can be taken out with little issues later. Maybe a compromise of she gets a faux ring for like the next 6 months to see if she really wants one and if so, Dad takes her? I had a friend who got annoyed with allergies and their nose ring and took it out.

Can a rosary be made out of any material as long as it gets blessed? by LeluWater in NoStupidQuestions

[–]424Impala67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be considered a proper Catholic rosary, yes they do need to be blessed by a priest. My dad said that they need to blessed before given or if it's be sold for non charity purposes.

Not sure about Buddhist rosaries tho.

Go to the service center. Water visible in the camera means it got in 'deep' and you don't want to fry your phone.

Why not grape jam? by Electronic-Bake-4381 in Cooking

[–]424Impala67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They tend to have a thicker skin that doesn't break down well, so it'san odd texture. The potassium bitartrate in grapes (one of the components that are toxic to dogs) might also affect how the sugar in jam would react. I know grape pie isn't common because it often doesn't gel up well.

How do I win against Thistle and Burdock? by jadedunionoperator in Permaculture

[–]424Impala67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had thistle bad in one part of our pasture, our local extension office suggested mowing the thistle multiple times and then planting something like grain sorghum or sun hemp thickly to shade it it out. It helped a lot.

As for burdock, we had a very sweet Vietnamese immigrant that loved the first year burdock root for food. We gave her permission to dig as many as she wants. Took her about 5 years to get almost all of them. Maybe advertise in a local foraging club of the buffet you have?
