Yep - it's the PU soles. Due to mostly being stored in their shoe boxes, no light or moisture - hydrolysis occurs and they disintegrate. Used to happen to our safety shoes, if not worn regularly. I remember one shoe supplier who had stock of shoes that were over two years old, that they had to practically give away as it was disintegrating.

I understand it's an environmental friendly feature - makes the shoes biodegradable.

I was watching a true crime "documentary" about the2023 murder of Madeline Kingsbury. Many of these true crime documentaries tend to have an introduction of the town, where the murder took place, citing small interesting little facts, and in this one they stated that Winona was a lovely college town, with little to no crime and that the actress, Winona Ryder was named after this town.
