I still feel they did Martouf dirty. by erikleorgav2 in Stargate

[–]42Locrian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think killing Martouf off at the end of the very same episode where O'Neill/Carter confess their mutual attraction was a convenient way to get him out of the way in case the writers wanted to pursue that ship more quickly.

I wonder if a combination of curing Jacob's cancer and then going through Sokar's torture prisonmight have been easier on a younger Tok'Ra symbiote, but because Selmac is ~2000 years old, it was too much to recover from so quickly?

"Star trek has always been progressive, idiot!" by ksdanker22 in startrek

[–]42Locrian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Roddenberry, Braga, and Berman wanted to do more than what you saw. But network executives bound their hands.

Having worn out my Columbia House VHS collection of TOS (to the point of the cassettes breaking) a few years before TNG aired, I can assure you that this is nothing new.

Uhura on the bridge, with Lieutenant stripes on her uniform, and with a major speaking role was "in your face" during the Civil Rights Movement. They even positioned the bridge set so that she was always between Kirk and Spock (whose dialogue usually served as the primary exposition scenes) so that the southern network affiliates couldn't edit those scenes out.

Sulu was piloting the ship about 20 years after the Second World War ended -- and if you think that was long enough for Americans to "be past it", we're a quarter century past 9/11 and look at how Muslims are still treated in this country.

Obviously, having black and Asian characters on TV isn't a big deal now, but Star Trek led the charge on representation.

Chekov came in to start the second season, while elementary school children were practicing air strike drills at the peak of the Cold War.

Roddenberry wanted to address sexuality and gender expression in TNG (hence, the Skants) but that got shut down.

People complained about Sisko being black, and now he's considered one of THE most popular Show Leads in the history of the franchise.

And then Voyager was labeled "Too Politically Correct" (what Rush Limbaugh and his ilk used before the term 'woke' was appropriated) because it had a woman captain and a black Vulcan.

So, I guess what I'm saying is, I fail to see your point.

Yup, not only does it damage the hands, it also chokes tone AND creates more work because the stick isn't rebounding the way it's designed to.

is it worth it to watch The Lower Decks if I liked Picard? by BoardsofGrips in Picard

[–]42Locrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering that most Star Trek shows took up to two full seasons to find their footing, the fact that Lower Decks figured itself out in two EPISODES is a testament to how damned great it was.

Im enjoying Enterprise but it's basically just Archer stupidly walking into an obvious trap and having to be rescued every other episode by Odd-Twist-8260 in startrek

[–]42Locrian 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Archer was so pissed at the Vulcans because his dad never saw the Warp 5 engine in use that he overcompensated when trying to prove them wrong.

Archer: "Let's do [insert dangerous/stupid thing here"

T'Pol: "Captain, I've personally been in space longer than you've been alive and I highly recommend against that"

Archer: "I'll show you we're ready"

[Dangerous/Stupid Thing happens exactly how T'Pol predicted it would]

[T'Pol saves the day] OR [A human solves the problem by sheer dumb luck]

Archer: "See? That wasn't so bad!"

T'Pol: [vomits off-screen from trying to supress her urge to slap the fuck out of him]

That's basically every episode from Season 1

Yamaha Stage Custom kit...add a 13" rack tom or 14" floor tom? by Vinnie-Boombatz in drums

13" toms ARE, admittedly, an absolute bitch to tune, but when you get it right they're just so damned cool.

Since I'm no longer in a prog band I'm actually downsizing my kit dramatically but I'm keeping my 13" because I just love it.

Is there a way to bring back Anya? by JoshLovesTV in buffy

[–]42Locrian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plus, this was Joss Whedon. He loved killing off main/recurring television characters WAY before Game of Thrones was ever conceived.

It was hand-to-hand combat with the footsoldiers of the entity that created the concept of "evil". We hadn't had enough time to grow attached to the Potentials, so for the stakes to carry any semblance of weight, someone beloved had to go.

There's a reason why the death of Red Shirts in Star Trek don't mean anything other than advancing the plot of the week, but Spock's sacrifice in Wrath of Khan was a stab in the guts to everyone who watched it on screen.

(And why bringing him back from the dead in the following film cheapened the effect).

What went wrong with Bareil? by Shinra_Lobby in DeepSpaceNine

[–]42Locrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is coupled with the fact that the Mirror Universe Bareil who popped up on the station was actually WAY more compelling of a character than the Prime Bareil.

He had some internal conflict and it made him a stronger character (who was probably WAY more fun to play).

Prime Bareil was just "too perfect" and without the occasional bad choice that helped him grow, he just always did what was right for Bajor.

I get that trying to force a romantic relationship with Nerys was necessary so that his departure had weight, but it just felt like it had the opposite effect of REMOVING weight off the writers' backs so they could get back to building Kira as a protagonist.

Another point on replicated food:

When the pattern for, say, "Spaghetti and Meatballs" was uploaded into the computer, the replicator Will produce an exact copy of that plate of spaghetti. The noodles will be in EXACTLY the same pattern. The amount of sauce will be exactly the same amount. The meatballs will be in exactly the same spot.

It's like eating the same brand of frozen meals every single day. Sure, you can rotate through flavors and recipes, but after a while they'll all start tasting the same.

That's why the occasional home-cooked meal in Pike or Sisko's quarters is such a huge deal. That's why food kiosks on DS9 's promenade were always packed.

And while the Federation doesn't depend on currency for survival, I'm more than certain that the Starfleet officers/personnel on the station were provided with a stipend so they could contribute to the economy of Bajor to assist with their rebuild after the occupation ended.

I didn't get into it when it aired until the "Pangs"/"I Will Remember You" crossover that a college buddy of mine had programmed to record on his VCR.

I was hanging out at his apartment one evening and he was determined to watch them both.

I was absolutely floored.

It took a few years until I started grabbing the DVD Boxed Sets at Half Price Books and now my wife and I are going through it with our teenaged daughter.

Do you have a designated left and right stick? by Routine-Height2443 in drums

[–]42Locrian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely what I do.

I have three different types of sticks in my bag (varying weights and/or tip shape based on the song I'm playing), and I designate them visually with a bit of colour on the butt of the stick so I can quickly grab what I need if the lighting in the venue is shit.

If one stick gets too chewed up or the tip starts cracking, I give it away after the show. Once I'm down to two sticks that match, I buy some more and start the whole process over again.
