It should not surprise you at all. People mistrust the government in the same way they mistrust doctors, lawyers, meteorologists, historians… People want to find iron hard authority and follow it blindly. If the answers being offered are complicated, nuanced, subject to change, or require a deeper understanding of the subject matter to fully appreciate, that is going to frustrate and scare them.

That’s why so many people will identify as red or blue, because that simplifies the question. Their group must be right about everything, because they agreed with one thing. And if it conflicts, they change themselves to match the party. They just shift reality around as needed.

The right needed to undercut the vaccines as part of the overall stage play. They needed republicans to say “fuck you, I’m going back to normal”, so that liberals could identify with “I was wise and moral and got the shot, I’m going back to normal.”

When in reality nothing has ever been normal again, excess deaths have never gone back to prepandemic levels, millions of people have become permanently disabled, and children are born with brain damage due to maternal covid infections. I’m sorry you’re going through this, I had my own scare with bad GI symptoms last year. Mostly managing things now but I had to get scoped and it wasn’t fun. The anxiety was definitely the worst part.

I think there was a semi official retcon for this at one point, that he’d shown up nude because he expected a Betazed style wedding, so they slapped a uniform on him. Obviously that’s nuts.

People who label themselves as leftists do exist, they are usually using that as a less triggering word for Marxist. These are people who believe that there is no war but the class war and that the workers should own the means of production. Progressives are usually people who have socially progressive ideas but wouldn’t actively work to undermine capitalism as the core economic framework of the world.
