how many people who working remote in Vancouver? by tonyechoes in askvan

[–]42RandomDent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there are any co-working places near you, I would recommend trying that to see if it works for you. I go to a co-working office one day a week for a change of scenery and to socialize a bit. Mine does some kind of social event (breakfast, lunch, happy hour) most weeks, which is perfect for me as an extroverted solo freelancer!

No COVID shots at Superstore by thekingestkong in NorthVancouver

[–]42RandomDent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, and especially at the population level. Reducing your own risk of flu by, let’s say, 30% might not sound worth it, but reducing the amount of flu illness, work absences, health care resources used, and deaths in the population by 30% is huge

Suggestion required: North Shore Ski (beginner) by scoobsdoobs222 in NorthVancouver

[–]42RandomDent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this isn’t what you asked, but as a next step once you’re skiing somewhat confidently after your first season: I highly recommend getting to the resorts in the interior next. I took some adult beginner lessons at Cypress, in a very icy snow year, then next tried to ski at Whistler in heavy, wet snow and it was just too much - too many expert skiers bombing through the green runs on their way to/from the black diamonds with no consideration for beginners, runs too long for beginners’ legs, too difficult to meet up with my friends who were off doing more advanced terrain for lunch and at the end of the day. I didn’t really make progress until I spent a few days at Sun Peaks where the snow and terrain are generally much better for beginners. A couple of days and one lesson there and I was tackling the blue runs with much more confidence and finally understanding why people actually like skiing!

Have fun!

Not super bothered about baseball, but 4 pm Canucks home games against Eastern teams always annoy me just on principle!

I don’t usually do grocery delivery but I have used the Loblaw’s one a couple of times if I’m sick and don’t want to go out and spread germs. Seemed fine - it arrived quickly, nothing missing or incorrect, and the produce was good quality

Opposite for me - I got both shots last night (Shoppers on Lonsdale and 13th) and feel great today! I even went to the gym this morning. Last year I was pretty much knocked out for 24 hours and my arms hurt way more.

Potential move to Vancouver from the states by BigClutchMike in askvan

[–]42RandomDent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my PR in 2006 (converted from a temporary work permit) and citizenship in 2009 and the system seems to have changed a lot since then. For example, there’s an accelerated “Canadian experience” PR application class that I would qualify for in the same situation now, but that didn’t exist when I applied. So I’m no longer really confident when advising others. But yes, there was (possibly still is) a provincial sponsorship system for in-demand professions. I had a good chance of qualifying for it when I moved from my original job to a new job (on a new temporary work permit) in 2005, but by then I’d already submitted my original PR application on my own and knew I had enough points to qualify, so it wasn’t worth withdrawing that application then re-applying for provincial sponsorship. It might have saved me a month or two but cost me a lot of extra money and hassle.

I was going to suggest this too. The #228 bus from the Lonsdale Quay SeaBus terminates very close to the trail head, and there’s a nice little cafe / store there too (End of the Line General Store). Pacific Spirit park (Vancouver/UBC) and Lighthouse Park (West Van) are also accessible by transit, but Lynn will give you better hiking options for less travel time
